Title: House, M.D.
Description: The best show on television right now

Rev - May 11, 2006 08:10 PM (GMT)
There are only a few shows I watch regularly: 24, Lost, Family Guy, South Park, and House. And of those shows, House has become the best thing going on TV right now. All of the main characters (six total) have been really, really well developed over the past two seasons. They all react with perfect knowledge of what they've done in the past, and everything they do is in keeping with their character. It doesn't sound like much, but how many TV shows can really say that they have multidimensonal characters who act realistically? Top-notch character development with some really, really good medical stuff thrown in there. And as a kicker, House is by far the best character on television today. It's unreal how perfect he is at the role. Anyone else here watch it?

Scott - May 11, 2006 08:22 PM (GMT)
I watch it week in and week out Rev. Definitely one of my top shows right now. I agree that all the characters are well developed, with the aside of Chase (just don't feel like I know much about him), don't get a show where so many characters are different, come from different backgrounds, fight like a family, yet work lso well together like ants. It is great. And Lurie is PERFECT as House. Never seen a more bitter, synical, angry and sarcastic character in a long time. He is almost borderline Archie Bunker.

Rev - May 11, 2006 08:56 PM (GMT)
He really is kinda like Archie, only you know he doesn't mean a word he says. But some of the things he does would make Archie blush.

Sully - May 11, 2006 09:46 PM (GMT)
Rev -- I've seen some episodes, parts of others and at the least, have overheard them all because it's Mrs. Sheriff's favorite show. It just seems like every week it's the same plot line, I mean, I like it, House is funny, great character but:

1) Random person falls deathly sick for no explainable reason
2) House pops 20 vics and is mean to everyone
3) Doctors run a bunch of tests but original theories are wrong
4) House pops 20 vics, takes his bike for a spin, and is mean to more people
5) With the patient have hours to live, House thinks of a never-before-attempted way to save the person. Everyone disagrees with him, says he can lose job -- this despite House having been correct 40 previous times -- and sure enough, House saves the patient.
6) House hangs out with buddy doctor, pops a few vics and the credits

Am I missing something? I mean, I respect Peter King, my wife and you and it's the favorite show on TV of each of that vaunted trio, but I don't see it.

Then again, I'm one of 18 people still watching The West Wing.

Rev - May 11, 2006 10:32 PM (GMT)
Looking at it as a medical show is missing the true meat of it. Yeah, a lot of that stuff is certainly true. However, kinda like what I said in the first post, the best part about the show is the characters. All of them really make sense and react in ways that perfectly underlie things. The scenes where they work together are what make the show great. The medical stuff has actually been a little more unpredictable the last few weeks, but there are a few things you can count on:

- Every patient and family member is lying
- There's always a tumor/cancer

I have a couple pre-med friends who are hooked on the show - they tell me that the medical side of it is basically airtight and well-done, so I'm willing to believe them on that one. Still, the characters are what make it a great show. I can see why you'd feel that way about it, though - when you're just checking in for parts of episodes, the medical plot immedidately leaps to the forefront. Watch a few consecutive episodes in full, and I think you'd probably appreciate it more.

Mrs. BB and BB used to have entire nights that we had planned around tv shows. Now, the only two shows we really watch are whatever HBO Sunday show is on. Rome, Deadwood, Six Feet Under, Sopranos, etc and House. We love the character of Dr. House and don't care if he finds the cure or not. BB loves a character that can act as apathetic as House yet care so much. Agreed that the plot lines must get better in a second season, but with strong characters, the stories could write themselves.

BB's favorite scenes each week is when House send his underlings to break into a patient's home to discover what has really been going on in that person's life.

A little off topic, but we loved Dead Like Me, too.

Oh, yea, Larry David is one funny dude. Curb Your Enthusiasm and Entourage. Boy, I guess we spend more time together than we realized.

Scott - May 12, 2006 01:01 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I hate to change the subject again but does anyone watch Criminal Minds other than me?

What about CSI, anyone tried to go to the website to figure out what the hell they are trying to show in that painting online? I can't figure any of it out and of course they give you nothing.

Criminal Minds last night was SUCH a good part one of two. Really, really smart show sometimes and I think it is really underrated.

Big fan of Larry David here, too! Curb Your Enthusiasm is my favorite show on TV.

Rev, isn't pre med simply a glorified biology student? how would they know what goes on inside the mind of the great Dr. House? cue smiley for humorous sarcasm.

Rev - May 17, 2006 05:49 AM (GMT)
The preview for the season finale of House was the best preview I've ever seen them do. I'm psyched as hell for next week's finale, almost as much as I am for the 24 finale. Man, with the 24, House, and Lost finales on three straight days, I dunno if I can handle the excitement.

G-Man - May 17, 2006 12:28 PM (GMT)
I watched House for a few episondes in the first season and liked it, Hugh Laurie is a fantastic actor, I can't beleive it's the same guy from the Blackadder series. But every episode was the same. How many "unsolvable" cases can he solve at 10 minutes to go in the show? so I havent watched it all since last year, and the preivews for each episode don't seem to show any change in that pattern. Just my opinion. (OK I just scrolled down and read some notes and the Sheriff posted some similar thoughts)

Rev, quick question. You mention both South Park and Family Guy on you favorite list. How did you reconcile your feelings after the complete (and accurate) rip job Trey and Matt did on Family guy?

by the way, the first two seasons of West Wing were as good as any series ever, but then it went downhill after that, especially after Sorkin left. Did they ever explain the disappearance of the Moira Kelly character from the first season? she just left without a mention like Chuck Cunningham.

Time Out - September 5, 2006 06:44 PM (GMT)
Almost forgot, I believe the season premiere is tonight.

Here's a Yahoo link to some video clips from tonight's show for those interested.

Mel Hall - September 5, 2006 07:18 PM (GMT)
Thanks TO.. I'll be watching (or dvr'ing)

Scott - September 5, 2006 10:49 PM (GMT)
Premiere is tonight! Woo hoo! Along with the series premiere of Standoff right after it. Very curious about that one. Always like the art of negotiating.

Time Out - September 6, 2006 03:18 AM (GMT)
Won't give it away for anyone who hasn't seen the season premiere yet, but one thing I can say now is that it's going to take me awhile to get used to seeing Dr. House walking around without a limp.

Jill D - November 1, 2006 12:24 AM (GMT)
Just a reminder, House returns at 9:00 tonight.

-BB- - November 1, 2006 12:48 AM (GMT)
Yep, America lost many patients during the baseball playoffs. Now Dr. House can resume curing the incurable while insulting everyone that dares get in his path. As I recall, last show it was suggested he had a rare form of a type of obsessive/compulsive syndrome.

-BB- - December 13, 2006 04:00 PM (GMT)
Dr. House had a rough time of it last night. This cop is pissing me off. Offers a deal and takes it away because he has new evidence. Now they're going to go to trial. My guess is the judge comes down with some rare disease only House can diagnose. You scratch my back, judgy wudgy. Dr. House may be the best tv doctor ever. Yes, you heard me.....EVER. Wanted to take Denny Crane's dwarf for a spin last night.

Craig, this post has nothing to do with your sexual preference.

That was the cop's last episode BB, he won't be back after the holidays.

That first scene was the dwarf was priceless.

I thought I read (probably here) that Morse was done but we thought we saw him in the previews.

I thought House taking all those pills was a little over the top but Laura and I love this show, actually look forward to it. HL has to win an award this year.

House, Denny Crane and Alec Baldwin (don't know his character's name) are the best characters on tv.

Sully - December 13, 2006 05:15 PM (GMT)
30 Rock was horrid last week, but Baldwin is really something. Combined with his efforts in The Departed and it's been a huge year for God.

bodhran - December 14, 2006 12:49 AM (GMT)
Best thing that ever happened to Baldwin was getting older. His worst work is as the leading man. Starting out in small parts he was very good. See Talk Radio, Glengarry Glenross, and Married to the Mob.

Now as a character actor again he is doing great work.

Time Out - December 14, 2006 01:24 AM (GMT)
Agreed. Bodhran, you certainly know your television and movie stuff. Please feel free to talk a little sports with us too. :D

-BB- - January 9, 2007 03:32 PM (GMT)
I've never actually seen the official statistics but it is a proven fact that thousands of people die needlessly while Dr. House is in reruns. A wrong is righted, the ship set back on course, the House is put back in order, tonight on Fox. Dr. House goes on trial. If he loses and goes to the Big House do they have dying people to cure there?

While many of you ponder the silly, the trite, BB tackles the real issues. I mean, really, shouldn't this message board serve its constituents. Does everyone really care about steroids in the Hall. National Championship, only Joe remotely cares. Tall chick pajamas? Come on. Only Craig truly knows if his relatives work at Friendly's. And *SPOILER ALERT* you all must realize by now that TO is actually Mel Hall. Mel is the only "person" bright enough to invent such an unbelievable character and bring him to life, if that's what you want to call it.

Have a great day, everyone. :)

so TLN created me, and I created TO... who created TLN?

he's the true genius   <_<

GO Hockey East!!!!

In the House! On right now.

Yankees rock!

Oops, that was supposed to go on the Mel post...

Now I've heard that TLN is quite the looker but this is the Station. Since it's the Station, I would assume that Bea Arthur has someting to do with it.

Jill D - January 10, 2007 03:23 AM (GMT)
I'll vouch for the fact that TLN definitely exists in his own right (unless the people at his fine place of employ are covering for some stranger), and is a good-looking guy to boot. Can't carry an earring like Bea Arthur, though

Just finished watching House; terrific show, great ending to the Tritter arc. Man, that guy Morse can act. I'd love to know what happened to that character to make him the twisted, cynical-as-hell guy he is.

Sully - January 10, 2007 03:28 AM (GMT)
Great episode. Easily the best to date, I liked the Primal Fear like ending.

-BB- - January 10, 2007 06:01 AM (GMT)
good episode. I was hoping House was actually having a life-changing experience. House is so complicated. One of the top television characters in my lifetime.

bodhran - January 10, 2007 12:48 PM (GMT)
It is too bad the David Morse Character was not called something like Morriarty make it a further tribute to Holmes.

-BB- - January 10, 2007 07:09 PM (GMT)
gotta get Dr. House back at the top.

Nobody, but NOBODY, comes to our House thread and pushes us around. That includes you, Jack Bauer.

Beebs,

What's the self life of Dr. House? I was talking to my mother this morning, like Dani, she loves the show. But I mean, it's the same thing every week, right? This thing with Morse was nice, but a one-time gig.

The previews for the next new one, in three weeks, was funny because it's the same preview every time. "House as you've never seen him."

Let me guess, sick guy, his three assistants have no clue, he messed up the first two or three guesses and then, wham, around three quarters pass the hour, comes up with it and that's it.

-BB- - January 10, 2007 07:38 PM (GMT)
Sully, I say in all seriousness that the character and HL's acting can carry the show. As long as the cases are interesting I don't think they need to change the formula. It's actually part of the charm of the show. I say the shelf life is as long as Laurie is doing the show because he enjoys the character and not for the paycheck. This show carried Fox last night.

bodhran - January 10, 2007 07:39 PM (GMT)
That is true but the same can be said from many dramas. Especially ones that are focused primarily on once character. Hugh Laurie is just fun to watch.

What drama is carried by a single character/actor? I can't think of any on the air. I haven't watched 24 much but couldn't Jack Bauer be replaced? House will be a terrific show until the day Laurie picks up a script and just can't bring himself to do the same crap. Of course, introducing strong people like Selma Ward and David Morse gives the show a little extra kick.

Sully - January 10, 2007 07:49 PM (GMT)
NO, Jack Bauer could not be replaced. But you make a decent point.

Sutherland is the show. I agree on House/Lawrie, though.

Scott - January 10, 2007 07:58 PM (GMT)
LOVED the episode last night. I turned to my wife and said "no way House is going to be regular"...yep, no way. He is a dick and we all love him that way. He says the things I wish i could say.

no way could you have House with out House name of the show problems aside.

Cannot have 24 with out Jack.

Cannot have Numbers without the Math guy

cannot have Medium without the well Medium.

Veronica Mars without Veronica Mars.

The Shield without Vic Mackey

The Ghost Whisper without JLH altough she may count as 3 characters.
