When most people stop to talk about Jack with me, they ask if he can be let off lead..
I let him off every day with no problem. How many of you can't trust your Salukis off lead? Maybe because Jack isn't a pedigree it's different and his recall is good? -------------------- |

Rusty our saluki lurcher is pretty good off lead. I wouldn't trust him too close to roads or anywhere near livestock though. I do lots of recall practice using whistle & treats although when he gets in 'play mode' with another dog it all goes a bit wrong! Practice practice practice and even then it'l never be 100% perfect!

Jasmine is 3 1/4 Saluki and 1/4 greyhound and runs off the lead on every walk!
She has just turned 1 and is easily distracted as she LOVES other dogs and as my Bob is 13 and wont play any other dog be it a chiwawa or great dane is a potential play mate Her recall is not brilliant but is getting better and she loves her ball so that usually does the trick as she will play fetch for hours She also doesn't like to loose sight of me so will never stray far Like any dog as long as you start them young and socialise them well they can be let loose (in a safe place of course!) Flash and Dylan are always off lead on walks in our country park. Elsewhere I am really careful though as I wouldn't trust them 100% so not near road and not near lifestock.
I have done a lot of recall work with them, and still call them frequently and use treats when they come back. -------------------- |

Dash is a funny one off the lead. If I take him out wearing a harness his behaviour is impeccable with excellent recall. If he doesn't have the harness on he's a right little shit.

We started taking jack and Jill off leash in an enclosed 3-5acre area. It took them a year to get a fairly good recall90% (they sometimes take their time returning). They pretty much now will stay within sight of me off lead. We had succes when we took them to our hunting property (50 acres-but all unfenced so with adjoining properties there are thousands of acres) I was quite nervous to let them go. They did remarkably well even returning very quickly after chasin deer and rabbits. I have found that if I watch them closely - I can tell by thir body posture and eyes if they found something- if I catch them before the "lock in and spring" I can tell them "no - stay" and they mostly do... Deer and rabbit usually are way to tempting though. I will never take them off lead where they could run into a road chasing an animal - because they are to focused and do not notice any dangers.
