How about implementing a lottery system for draft choices. You know, similar to that of the NHL, or a version of it with our own rules. What do you guys think.

Well here are the current rules

Draft Order

The 14 teams that missed the playoffs during the previous season hold the first 14 picks. They draft in order of fewest points to most points, subject to the results of the draft lottery (see below).
The current Stanley Cup champion picks last (30th).
The Stanley Cup runner-up picks 29th.
The other two Conference Finalists pick 28th and 27th.
Regular-season division winners hold the other lowest positions.
Remaining teams draft in order of fewest points to most points from the previous regular season.

The Draft Lottery

The selection order in the first round is subject to a lottery, held among the teams that hold the top 14 picks. There is only one winning team in the lottery. That team moves up a maximum of four places in the draft order and can only be droped by one place. Thus the only clubs with the opportunity to receive the 1st overall selection are the five clubs with the lowest regular-season point totals (or clubs that acquired those clubs' first-round drafting positions). The lottery is weighted to favor the teams with the fewest points. It was introduced to prevent a weak team from deliberately losing to guarantee itself a high draft pick.

Meaning: Every team has let's a number in a hat for a total of 1001 choices. Teams with lowest points get more choices in the hat. Let's say for example Nashville finished as the 14th team. Nashville would have a .5% chance to get the first pick. But according the the rules they can only move up 4 spots in the draft, meaning they would move in to the 10th spot. In this case the team with the lowest points for the season, let's say L.A, would automatically be the next team chosen because the cannot droped more than one place in the rankings. So L.A would get the first pick overall.

The team with the fewest point in the season has 48.2 chance of choosing first and a 52.8 chance of chosing second

NHL uses combination, but we can use that each gets, for examples for the 30th team, 250 chances.
30th........... 25.0% (250 combinations)
29th........... 18.8% (188 combinations)
28th........... 14.2% (142 combinations)
27th........... 10.7% (107 combinations)
26th.............8.1% (81 combinations)
25th.............6.2% (62 combinations)
24th.............4.7% (47 combinations)
23rd.............3.6% (36 combinations)
22nd............ 2.7% (27 combinations)
21st.............2.1% (21 combinations)
20th.............1.5% (15 combinations)
19th.............1.1% (11 combinations)
18th.............0.8% (8 combinations)
17th.............0.5% (5 combinations)

Kind of complicated, I know... But it would be different

Alright, I did a mock lottery based on todays standings.

Team / Chances / Number Assigned
LA / 250 / "751-1001"
BOS / 188 / "563-750"
NYR /142 / "421-562"
DAL / 107 / "314-420"
VAN / 81 / "233-313"
NJ / 62 / "171-232"
ATL / 47 / "124-170"
PIT / 36 / "88-123"
DET / 27 / "61-87"
CAR / 21 / "40-60"
PHX / 15 / "25-39"
MIN / 11 / "14-24"
EDM / 8 / "6-13"
NAS / 5 / "1-5"

Here's The Results

1.DAL
2.LA
3.BOS
4.NYR
5.VAN
6.ATL
7.NJ
8.DET
9.PIT
10.CAR
11.PHX
12.NAS
13.MIN
14.EDM

Something like this wouldnt be hard to do come draft time. All I did was use a random number generator.

I'm against this, at least this late in the year. I've made and turned down trades based on there being no lottery this year. A lottery could help or hurt my situation - I've got a few options there - I just think this is a little late for this decision.

I like it, but if some of us have problems with it, we could start next season.

I understand where your coming from VansGM. Although In your situation, you would have an opportunity to pick fisrt overall. The 5 lowest teams have a shot to choose first overall. That is if you stay within the bottom 5 of the league.

We could start it, not this upcoming draft, but the draft after that. Those results are only a example. The lottery would be performed before our entry draft
