Alright guys, I know that when you think of buying books, most of you think of Scholastic, Books-a-Million, or even Hastings or Waldens. Those are all great places to get books, but they're not your only options. If you're heading to Fort Smith or Russellville any time, there are great little used book stores all over the place if you know where to look.
In Fort Smith, Garrison Ave. is a great place to find little second hand book stores. Books go for at least half of cover price, and usually not even that much. They're in good to decent condition, and affordable. Just because they've been read before doesn't mean that they aren't still good. I promise, the plot hasn't been read out of them! Try a place called Snoopers Barn in Fort Smith (you can get a phone book to get the exact address). If you don't mind spending ten more minutes to get into Van Buren, go over to L. H. Brandenburg: Bookseller. A guy named Larry owns a bookstore that has a great selection, with a downstairs area for your Sci Fi and Fantasy freaks (me!) and a room full of childrens and young adult books. Everything is ordered and neat, but he won't be able to tell you if he has a certain title (he doesn't keep things on computer, last I checked), but he can tell you where you would be able to find it if he had it.
In Russellville, check out these places: On Arkansas Ave (the big road that leads to Tech) there will be a place called Bookers. It's got some great books, but it's pretty small, which I guess actually makes it easier to find the books you're looking for. Vintage Books is on a street that I can't remember right now. They've got a decent selection, too. Watch out, though, because they're pretty proud of their books, and sometimes they run a little higher than they should for used books.
There are of course more bookstores than these, but these are my frequent hangouts. Alpha Books is closeing this month, but if you can get to Fort Smith and onto Garrison Ave, then you'll be able to buy any book in the store for $1. It's a real bargain, guys.
Lastly, don't forget the wonderful power of the internet. Go to amazon.com and look for any books. They're bound to have it. You can also go to places like halfpricebooks.com (I believe) and check out some great deals. Be sure to check out how much shipping and handling is going to be, because it could add up to quite a bit, so be warned.
Overall, just check around. You don't have to go to a big bookstore to get your books and pay a fortune. Never stop going to those places, though, because they run deals pretty often. Hastings always has used books on sale, and Books-a-Million always has a bargain book section, which is pretty extensive. Check it out. I'm hoping that my Readers and Writers can go on a book tour of Fort Smith in the spring. We'll see what we can do then.
