It looks like THQ and the still awkwardly named Syfy have more than just De Blob in store for their transmedia tryst: Broadcasting & Cable reports that "Syfy has just closed a deal to bring Red Faction to television via a two-hour movie, which will also serve as a back-door pilot." A "back-door pilot," for those of you not in on television industry jargon, is defined by Variety as a "pilot episode filmed as a standalone movie, so it can be broadcast if it is not picked up as a series." So, in other words, Syfy is making a Red Faction movie, ostensibly tied into the new, more "narrative" game expected in early 2011, with the hope of continuing the production as an ongoing series.

While discussing his studio's transmedia strategy with Joystiq at GDC in March, THQ's Danny Bilson put to rest any concerns that this project is going the way of the Halo movie. "I'm only doing deals where we have a greenlight, meaning we are on the air; we are being made as a film," Bilson said. "You're not going to read about, 'Oh, this producer is going to do the Red Faction movie,' and you never hear about it again."

But that's not the end of this relationship. The aforementioned 2011 Red Faction game "will be produced in conjunction with Syfy Games," adding to the cable channels other ongoing gaming projects, including the Battlestar Galactica MMO and the "Syfy Action MMO" that Trion is working on. Syfy's Alan Seiffert said of the Red Faction deal, "It is the kind of content that fits our genre. It is a great fit for a big Syfy Saturday movie, and if it really works, it is a great back-door pilot."

Interesting turn. It's no secret that I'm a huge BSG fan but I have little-to-no faith in video game adaptations (c'mon, Prince of Persia, don't suck!). In this case I'm giving the network the benefit of the doubt here and will remain optimistic that this will actually get made and that it will be watchable. The little bit I've played of RF:G makes me think there's enough room for a decent movie. Not sure about a series, but we'll see.

Let's see... a Syfy Original movie set on Mars? Flying vehicles, exploding buildings? I bet it will have that amazing CGI that we've come to expect from Syfy.

I can picture it in my head, and it almost looks as good as Mega Shark vs Super Octopus 3.

Fair point, but BSG had really good FX work for the bookends of each season. Sure, they'd blow all the budget in the premieres and the finales and leave the middle sections a little light, but it was fine.

Even the original mini-series (which is the most analogous to this) was very good in that department.

Strangely enough, "back-door pilot" was also johneightu's nickname in college.

SyFy movies are generally awesome. Not good movies at all - pretty awful writing and acting - and yet I watch them all the time.

Here's hoping it stars Coolio or some 80s pop star.

Well SyFy movies are pretty universally awful, but a number of their series are awesome (BSG, Tin Man, Eureka, etc.). Seeing that this is essentially a pilot episode, has me being hopeful.

Personally I think the concept would work much better as a series than a movie. You can build a lot of action-fueled political intrigue out of the franchise (not unlike BSG). In fact, my one complaint about RF:G was that I thought they dropped the ball with the story and could have done so much more with it.

Does it surprise anyone that this made me laugh really hard? I wish I said it first!

Also, the game's story is interesting and all, but the main draw was just breaking down buildings. I don't know how well that feeling would transfer over to a movie or show. It's fun to blow up buildings for an hour, but it's not that fun to just watch it.

They did sink huge parts of the budget into early and late F/X, but Battlestar was a character show first, action show (at best) 2nd. It was always about the science vs religion debate or what makes something human. Sadly, I do not see anything remotely that serious in Red Faction.

Prof's right in that they dropped the ball but I'm not sure how much of a ball they had/have to play with anyway.

Also, THEY'RE MAKING A BSG MMO?! How's that going to work? As a fan of the original Xbox/PS2 flight game I can see where that genre lends it self to that, but I'm not sure how a Rag-Tag Fleet on the run makes an MMO.

Through a collaboration between THQ and SyFy, we are proud to announce the first details on Red Faction: Origins!

Red Faction: Origins will be a two hour live-action movie pilot scheduled to air in March 2011 on SyFy.  The story of Red Faction: Origins follows the lineage of rebel hero Alec Mason and the Mason family, set during a period between Red Faction: Guerrilla and Red Faction: Armageddon.

The Red Faction: Origins screenplay was written by notable writer and producer Andrew Kreisberg (Warehouse 13, Fringe, Vampire Diaries and Boston Legal), based on a story developed by Paul DeMeo (The Rocketeer, Flash, Viper, The Sentinel), THQ Director, Fiction Development.

Red Faction: Origins will also be one of the main talking points in our RFA Transmedia panel at Comic Con on Saturday July 24th.  Remember that we have an open call for Community Q&A specifically concerning this panel, so ask any questions you may have about Origins over in this thread.

As always, stay tuned to the front page for more news and come join us over in the forums to discuss everything Red Faction related.
