Episode #53: Halo: Reach / Hydrophobia / DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue / Alien Breed 2 / Sonic Adventure / Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions

On the eve of the big holiday release season the guys have their hands full with the latest in downloadable offerings.  Indie Games lead the show with Cattle Crashers, Nuclear Wasteland, Techno Kitten Adventure, Snailien Invasion!, and Mama & Son - Clean House.  Jeremy offers some more thoughts on Plants vs. Zombies, Blade Kitten is given a run through , Sean goes middle school with the port of Sonic Adventure, Jeremy doesn't know why he likes Space Invaders: Infinity Gene, Craig goes in depth with both Alien Breed 2: Assault and DeathSpank: Thongs of Virtue, and Jeremy gives some initial impressions on this week's Game Feast launch title Hydrophobia.  A number of demos also get some attention with Quantum Theory, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, Legend of the Guardians, and ArcaniA - Gothic 4.  Craig gives his impression of Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, and Sean and Jeremy cave and do the responsible Xbox podcast thing and play some Halo: Reach.  Get a helmet.

I just stream straight from your original website, http://pseudoradio.blogspot.com/, but when I click the play button, it is for episode 52 (last week), even though it does say #53 on the audio player bar. ?? Trying downloading it now to see if that works. That worked. OK, gonna go give it a listen, but just so you guys know, the direct stream is glitchy, at least on my end, but I'm no computer wiz by any means.

Superfro33 - September 27, 2010 05:40 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the heads up here and via PM folks. Looks like the link is wrong on the PseudoRadio front page. I've notified Craig so that should be updated at some point. In the meantime you can also stream it via the http://www.SignedInPodcast.com site if that's what you prefer. B)

Aftrthought051 - September 27, 2010 05:57 PM (GMT)
I agree Sean. I played Xenomorph as a kid as well and Alien Breed did remind of a 3D version of it.

I would definitely buy the Kenny Powers Halo game. The dialogue alone would be priceless. Haha.

And thanks for reviewing that owl game, no one else did. :D

Another great episode guys and thanks for covering Halo despite your dislike for it. Glad to see you ended up talking about the game, both good and bad, instead of going the route of other podcasts (cough*TalkRadar*cough) and spend the whole time putting it down/defending their review of it.

jessej07 - September 27, 2010 09:15 PM (GMT)
Yeah, Halo is not for everyone and Jeremy's impression that Master Chief never talks is an indication of the immersion that some players just don't feel. For me, the helmeted Noble 6 is more immersive than a de-helmed avatar that becomes more fleshed out. Often we relate much more personally to the abstract (see: Understanding Comics). Leaving the character without a defined face and any remarkable distinctive traits is usually meant to let players identify with it, and it worked for me even if my Spartan was a girl.

Still, Halo players you are not but you at least gave it the old college try.

Great show, guys. Everyone's mentioning how you handled Reach. Well, that's all fine and dandy but everyone is missing the point.

Enslaved.

Thank you for reminding me to look at this game. I'm so in love. I really hope the experience is as good as that demo. That's game of the year stuff right there.

We all have to grow and mature eventually. No worries, one day you will outgrow breastfeeding and your friends and families can get rid of that foster goat for you . . .

Ok this show again was great , but let's talk about the real awesomeness of the ep. That is of course what was up with Craig because he was amped up for this one. So funny and punchy whatever was different that day do it again because it was super fun.

It was later in the day than often, and it was the frist actual day off I had had in two weeks, so I was in a pretty good mood.

And you were at a table with Sean and I. Is there anything that could make a person happier? (Wait...weren't you finishing up a beverage when we got there?) :P

da-craig-o - September 28, 2010 07:10 PM (GMT)
I know that you guys do not like the Halo series and expect that from you.

What I don't expect is using the name at the front of your podcast episode and then talking about it in the last 10 minutes of a 2 hour podcast. Especially when only Sean played the game. If you don't play any aspect of multiplayer in a game like Halo then you didn't really play it.

Our total scam has been outed! :P

We normally lead the show description with retail releases, and Halo was all there was of importance in the last 2 weeks. I promise you it wasn't some grand act of trickery or bait and switch. (In fact on the Signed In site we do list the timeframes for each game discussion.) We definitely know the multiplayer is the big draw for any given Halo game. That's why I wasn't saying "Halo Reach is shit!" I definitely get the appeal, and know that multiplayer is the driving force of the releases, but I have no interest in the multiplayer no matter how hard I try so actually our representation of the game is probably much better off by me not experiencing and sharing it. ;)

You didn't place your review of Halo in your post, there for you didn't really just post about Halo.

Nice post about kittens.

I'm dumb and didn't realize you were @Geek_Lantern. My reading comprehension is shite.

Listen to what we're saying folks. Play that damn demo. I'm saying this through my passion for great entertainment and real quality experiences. This is what people need to be doing to push games forward as a medium.

Really? I found the camera cumbersome and the main character extremely annoying. It looks great and the climbing was fun. But I hate the characters.

Surprise ;)

BTW, I will also be doing a "listener's commentary" to episode #54 . . . it won't be available anywhere, it will just be me talking at my desk at work to myself. Nothing new.

"yeah, you are right, that enslaved demo is awesome. Are they tickling Sean right now?"

I'll definitely take a look and maybe we can have it on the next episode! Thanks for the heads up! B)

Edit - LOL I just went to queue up the demo and it says I already downloaded it. It's sitting on my HD, I must've just forgot to check it out.

There are probably a number of games that are going to fly under our radar this time of the year. There's a lot going on. :P I'll check that one out.

No thoughts of a scam. I didn't think the intent was to falsely advertise. However I wanted to give that feedback as I was honestly, truely expecting to hear some serious feedback on Reach.

I know that when COD MW2 came out, you guys basically said "Everyone is buying this and talking about it. We don't care about it." I can respect that. I did listen to the whole podcast hoping that you guys had sunk a bit of time into Reach. My mistake.

Although I would say in regards to the criticism about the game assuming you know what to do that the instruction booklet gives you the button layout. My Super Mario Bros. game never said "Jump on the mushrooms and turtles".

Edit - Hey Fro. I just noticed that you went on the Reach forum here and said you wanted to try the multiplayer but had interweb issues. I didn't realize that so I can see why you had a more limited experience. Not that I would expect you to like the game any more. :)

Dude, didn't you hear them mention how hard it was to set up a co-op game? Give them a break.

For the record, here's how to set up a co-op game.

The first screen that you see is the TITLE SCREEN.

There are two options, "Start Solo Campaign" and "Main Menu"

Press A on "Main Menu"

This brings up the MAIN MENU.

There are several options here, one being "Campaign."

Press A on "Campaign"

If your friend hasn't already joined your party, which he could have, just send an invite like in every other game you've played online.

The level will load while you are in the lobby, when it reaches 100% you may begin.

:P

Glad they didn't go with some super confusing approach like "Start Campaign" and "Start Co-Op Campaign" being two listed options. <_<

Well the intent seems to be that everything is co-op. No need to differentiate because the entire game is solo or co-op depending on your desires.

I fully blame Reach for teaching me what 2 am looks and feels like.
