Title: Dragon's Dogma
Description: More RPG goodness on the way
snakeheadfish - March 7, 2012 08:11 PM (GMT)
Is anyone here planning on picking this up? I'm about to drop a preorder any day now I think. But I would like to use friend pawns before some random grab. So if you're in, let it be known and come adventure time, I'll hunt down your pawn to help make them awesomer.

I think that pawn system sounds pretty cool, would be nice to also have an actual co-op mode though.
I'm keeping an eye on this one, might be something I'd like to get eventually.
boothdom - March 7, 2012 09:18 PM (GMT)
Oooh, I like the sound of that. Isn't that around the same time as Witcher comes out though?
If so I'm leaning more toward the latter. But if there's a gap I'll definitely be onboard with this.
Cheers,
Dom

Okay, that's pretty cool.
jessej07 - March 7, 2012 10:17 PM (GMT)
Maybe I'll rent and start a character so that when I return to it 8 years later you guys will have made my guy super powerful.

The Witcher2 is also on my want to play list but, I tend to lean towards games that have some sort of multiplayer/co-op component over single player nowadays. I can play Witcher2 any time, but Dragon's Dogma may only have legs for so long, so I feel like I have to get in on it when people are more likely to be playing it.

Customization of the main character. I didn't think this was even an option. I assumed you were free to make custom pawns and that the main character was set, aside from class and things.

I just played it and had fun with it. Yes it's still just a button smashing adventure game but fun and some cool enemies.
snakeheadfish - April 27, 2012 04:24 PM (GMT)
Checked out the demo last night. Wow the character/pawn customization is deep. It's also a rather beautiful game and the animations are tight. But holy crap there is a lot going on during battles. You got pawns yelling at you, their subtitles flying up the left side, miniature frame close-ups when contextual situations arise, weapon/action controls in one corner changing ... man my mind was having a hard time keeping up. But I did enjoy it quite a bit. Due to the fact that I was so overwhelmed by what I played I think I'll wait for a price drop/sale before picking it up. I don't need to be sitting on another RPG that won't get played right away. That stack is already a tad too high.
jessej07 - May 20, 2012 03:50 PM (GMT)
Reading
this review almost got me to preorder it just now.
Knowing that everyone here on these boards are waiting for a price drop or just not interested helps me decide to wait on it... though the $10 credit from Amazon is an effective price drop already... and... well... okay I'm still deciding.
I just feel like I'm ready for a hardcore RPG after playing so many tame ones in the past year or more (Dungeon Siege 3, Skyrim, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII, Lord of the Rings). I liked most of those RPGs (okay... not Dungeon Siege 3) but their strengths really weren't in the role playing, leveling, and customizing (except Skyrim) aspects. This game looks like it might be perfect for me.
I guess I should try the demo.
jessej07 - May 21, 2012 02:33 PM (GMT)
Okay the demo was extremely short but it was a lot of fun. Climbing onto the bosses and slashing at them is pretty fun, although I hope the camera is a bit better in the final version.
I think I spent more time customizing my character (Beau-nur, I'm so funny!) than I did playing the actual game. I thought it was a generic "pick-a-type-of-look" character generator but you can actually get very detailed.
snakeheadfish - May 21, 2012 03:36 PM (GMT)
I was basing my day one purchase of the game on whether or not anyone on my friends list was getting it so I could utilize their pawns (and would hope for the same courtesy). But it seemed like the game just wasn't striking a strong enough chord with anyone so my eagerness deflated somewhat. I guess I wanted to use friends pawns cause it would have a feeling of co-op even though it wasn't, yet you are helping your buddy with their game in a way. Which I still think is pretty cool.
johneightu - May 21, 2012 03:36 PM (GMT)
I want to play it . . . I really want to. But my time playing games has dwindled an awful lot, and the thought of wandering around a ton with ltitle direction scares me a bit.
One I am interested in trying out, though

I know and now I am going back on my decision to not get it... the more I look at it the more excited I am for it.
Definitely a buy, hope you can get it soon too.
It looks like a more customizable and easier Dark Souls... so I'm in.
snakeheadfish - May 21, 2012 06:11 PM (GMT)
Well damn it. It is done. At least now I will have enough credit to pay for a pre-order of ACreed 3 completely. Hopefully it will be easy to find your friends pawns.
snakeheadfish - May 22, 2012 05:41 PM (GMT)
My copy just arrived and the case is cracked in two spots. Game is fine and booklet are fine. When was the last time you got a game with an actual instruction booklet?
Anyways I'm going to do my best to play this one a bit different. I typically lean toward striker classes (to use D&D terms). Rangers, scouts and rogues are my bag. Mainly because dual weapons and archery appeal to me. But I'm going to start straight fighter this time around and see how long that lasts. From what I understand, as you play you open up the other classes and can kinda hybrid your character. So we will see how I end up over time.
jessej07 - May 23, 2012 04:18 AM (GMT)
I'm a couple hours in, just opened up to the pawn stuff.
Really awesome game... got my butt kicked by the first big ogre that appears. It took me a while to figure that fight out.
I hope more people on my friends list end up picking this game up.
Zagadoo - May 23, 2012 05:22 AM (GMT)
Snakeheadfish! It's the same Zagadoo from XBLA. I bought the game and so have a pawn. My pawn is a mage.
jessej07 - May 23, 2012 01:23 PM (GMT)
Zagadoo this is 8bucks50, btw. My pawn is also a mage.
I hope I can keep my pawn's level current with everyone's progress.

8bucks! Sweet. I think my dude is only level 6 or so. Not too high, but I might be way behind everyone else. I'm digging this game so far, the only thing I wish they could do is patch the game so your pawn companions give the same advice every 10 seconds rather than every .5 seconds.
boothdom - May 23, 2012 02:11 PM (GMT)
I'll be picking this up on Friday when it come out over here.
boothdom's the gamer tag. I'll try and catch up! :D

Dom

raptr.com says I've played for two hours, cause I wasn't keeping track myself. But even though the game found my demo save somehow and imported that character I felt like a total redo and spent a huge chunk of time on that. I have only made it through enough of the game to have picked my class, look around that starting building interior and walk out the door.
So I'll be far behind you guys and most likely have a shitty pawn in comparison. But hey, my pawn will not cost any crystals to use so, there's that.
I too was going to go with a pawn mage since they can cast heal spells but have been flip flopping on that. I would like my pawn to be appealing to you dudes and think it should fill a needed role. So I started leaning towards a strider type support. #### it. I still can't decide.
Can I say, you sure can tell it's a Japanese RPG cause that opening rock ballad is so bad. I click through the start up screens as fast as I can to avoid it.
boothdom, expect a FR sir.
johneightu - May 23, 2012 06:53 PM (GMT)
I feel a 3way coming on . . . . then on Friday a 4way. :)
Dudes, we need another shitty XBLA game to play together that both equally interests/disinterests us. I believe that game must be out there, we must find it

Speaking of which, while fighting the manticore my character started climbing it and then the action got crazy and I couldn't see where he was and once I did ... dude was face deep in the manticore's junk.
jessej07 - May 23, 2012 08:40 PM (GMT)
When the hell is the Daggerdale sequel coming out? If I recall the dream team of Daggerdale was myself, Snake, John, and Zagadoo... we beat that broke ass game despite it trying to break before it was over.
But speaking of Pawns, I only chose mage because I saw a stream that Capcom did showcasing some of the mage abilities... like- a freaking tornado zooming down on this ogre dude... it was huge and awesome.
I know the classes open up a bit more to include some hybrid classes, so I'm excited to see what those are like. I was torn between making my pawn look normal or freakishly ugly... I guess I'll do the ugly run on my second playthrough if I get there.
boothdom - May 23, 2012 08:49 PM (GMT)
Ive just spent a couple of hours mucking about with the character creator and I've decided I'm going to be a hot chick....with a bow. I spent too long in Amalur looking at an armoured dude that frowned all the time (and had odd coloured eyebrows, but that's a different story). I've also made my main pawn a small boy with a deep voice. <_<
I suspect these will last until friday eve when I get to change it all upon loading up the disk.
Amen on he Manticore junk. I got a bit to "up close and personal" with the Chimera's nethers in the dungeon bit. It was quite satisfying sitting on it's back jamming a sword in its head though.......
Cheers,
Dom
jessej07 - May 24, 2012 01:44 AM (GMT)
The pawn system is actually really awesome. I used Zagadoo's mage for a lot of quests and finally bid her adieu so I could send her back to Zagadoo with a rotten pumpkin. I'm saving up my buckets and brooms to send you guys as well... so, be ready for that.
The pawns constantly talk... which is kind of funny... and annoying. Mine is up to level 9 at the moment and I've given her all sorts of magic stuff so hopefully she is awesome.
Oh and one last thing... DON'T TALK SHiT abOUT THE AWESOME ROCK SONG IN THE TITLE SCREEN I'm disappointed the game loads so fast that it doesn't kick into full swing in time.
Edit: Also, when I slept at an inn the servers must have been notified of my characters name because they said I couldn't name my guy Beau-nur. Oh well, he felt more like a Tevin anyway. It just seemed weird that they made me change it several hours in.

Although I didn't get a chance to play last night I plan to remedy that tonight. But I fear my pawn will be left in the dust and may not be much help to those of you ahead of my progress. Which history has shown, to be slower than average gaming/gamer speed. But those of you who have yet to pick up the game may find my future pawn to be useful. I hope.
I was talking to a friend last night who is on the fence about the game and the pawns jabbering on was one thing I couldn't stop going on about. It wouldn't be so bad if they would just wait for each other to finish a sentence before starting a new one. The overlapping dialogue is obnoxious and add to that the scrolling subtitles accompanying it and I'm back to the point in the demo where I felt like it was too much on the screen and in my ears. I'm hesitant to remove the pawn subtitles for fear of missing something important when it comes to battle tactics or something but I'm seriously considering it.
Seriously buck .... that rock ballad? <_<
Be Love Yo - May 24, 2012 03:42 PM (GMT)
Is this game worthy to buy new or is it one to just wait until it drops in price, buy used, or wait until a friend completes it and borrow it?

Its worth it for the title screen music, don't listen to anyone else.
The game is kind of a specific appeal... sort of an acquired taste I guess. For me it totally strikes my fancy because it is a less challenging Dark Souls (though still challenging). It also is kind of like Skyrim without forcing you to follow-the-triangle. The game is pulling me into the world and that is the most important quality I look for in a game.
Try the demo and just realize that the final game is a year improved on that but the mechanics and tone of the game are pretty accurately represented.
And the pawn system is incredibly interesting and fun.
And seriously: the rock ballad. Bad/awesome Japanese rock.
jessej07 - May 24, 2012 04:43 PM (GMT)
Also, Snake, don't worry too much about your pawn being a lower level. I think everyone's levels will swing from highest to lowest at some point and even with low leveled pawns it will be fun to take them on a side quest and rate them. Also after resting at inns (I think) the pawns gain knowledge of completed quests which should help a little when you and your pawn get to those quests.
I had one random guy's pawn pretty much guide me through this misty forest because it had already been there. It was pretty awesome.
I only hope that you can afford using my pawn with its higher level.
edit:
oh,
here is the song everyone should be blasting on repeat.Oh here's the Japanese live version :)

I thought I read in the instruction booklet (yep, I read that shit) ... wait I've got it right here. Page 12 it says "Rift Crystals are required to recruit higher level pawns. Not required when hiring a Friend." So I plan to use my friends higher level pawns as much as possible.

Hahah, if its anything like dragon force...not a fan.
I am pretty interested in the game;
is it your basic run; hack n slash?
or like witcher 2 which requires some more strategy in your kill methods?

Oh man, that Intro rock ballad...
IS HORRIBLE!
dang i didnt think it would be thaaat bad...
haha worse than Dragon Force....

Yeah, you mentioned Dragon Force and I was going to say take that, then shift the slider all the way up past super lame into unholy lameness and you'll have Into Free Dangan, the track in Dragon's Dogma.
But it's awesome, right?!

I would say the game leans towards hacking, but you have to be very careful about it. The combat moves fast and you are frequently outnumbered. It definately doesn't lead towards steam rolling the enemy, they can hit pretty hard and running in and swingly wildly will get you killed. I've only played as a melee character in the demo and the game proper. The mage path might lead to a bit more planning, but it's still a quick game. It's a faster, but slightly more forgiving Dark Souls.

Oh that's great! I'm glad that it's quick, I've played many clunky games that were just not that great really.
I consider myself a console only gamer with the exception of a few pc games I'm hyped about... But as of recently on my iPod touch I've been playing alot of Dungeon Hunter 3. I have to say for a mobile game... It's really good :D I'm excited about it really, I've of maybe 3 hours in, but a word of warning, multiplayer is extremely tough! If you happen to be sittin on your bum and want some good mobile gamin, dungeon hunter three is great.
I'm purchasing dragons dogma next week :D I'm convinced thanks guys!!
