Here's the script for issue #37, the first half of the Dxun/Onderon two-parter. In the first issue, the group is shot down by Tobin's men and eventually run into Canderous.
| QUOTE | Knights of the Old Republic #37: The Twin Worlds, Part 1
(Onderon. The Ebon Hawk approaches the blockade.)
ATTON Well, this is Onderon. It looks like there's a long line to get into the Iziz Starport.
KREIA Something feels wrong here...a great disturbance here in orbit...and again on the planets below.
ATTON I guess this blockade is a symptom of larger problems on Onderon.
MIRA If they decide to do a cargo search, we're going to be in trouble.
ATTON I’m receiving a message from some Colonel Tobin. Patching it through…
TOBIN The Ebon Hawk. I was told to expect your arrival. I don't know your business on Onderon, but it ends here.
(Fighters go after the Hawk)
ATTON We’re taking some hits!
(Turret sequence/Ebon Hawk escape to Dxun)
(Onderon. Royal palace.)
TALIA Vaklu's saying that the Republic ship attacked first? That's madness!
KAVAR Unfortunately, lie or not, it's a madness people will believe.
TALIA The timing of this is atrocious. A space battle above our skies, so many of our fighters lost...
KAVAR Curiously, only Tobin's men were involved in that battle.
TALIA That schutta!
KAVAR Strong words, your majesty. But there is no good time for news like this. I recommend we continue with our plan.
TALIA But won't that bring even more followers to Vaklu's side, increasing his power?
KAVAR For a time, perhaps, but we both know he's not the true threat. It's his unseen support from the shadows that we must drag out into the light. Then, and only then, can we strike.
TALIA I fear by then it will be too late.
KAVAR Nothing in life is certain, your majesty. I will investigate this.
TALIA Is this necessary? I can guarantee your safety in the Palace, but outside these walls the General has many men that would do anything for him.
KAVAR I feel something, your majesty. There is a disruption in the Force. I MUST investigate this.
TALIA Very well. But please...be cautious.
KAVAR Aren’t I always?
(Kavar walks away.)
TALIA That’s what I was afraid you’d say.
(Dxun. Ebon Hawk.)
ATTON You know, just once, I wish someone was glad to see us. But no, if it isn't weapons pointed at our heads, it's someone trying to blast us out if the sky.
JADE Where did we land?
ATTON It looks like one of the moons of Onderon, not sure which one. It's mostly jungle and mountain. I did pick up the remains of an old outpost near here. Maybe that's why there's all these clearings around - maybe they were once settlements.
KREIA There were no settlements here. Those clearings were most likely once craters...or crash sites.
ATTON Crash sites?
KREIA This is Dxun, where the Mandalorians began their crusade against the Republic...the remains of whatever outposts you detected here are military ones. We should be careful.
ATTON This doesn't look much like a battlefield. This is where the Mandalorian Wars started?
JADE No. Dxun was the beginning of the end.
KREIA Much is buried here... and there is much that should remain buried.
JADE The sooner we leave this place, the better.
ATTON Until the ship is repaired, we're not going anywhere. Unless you can find another route to Onderon, we should sit tight.
KREIA There may be a means to get to Onderon by another route. The Force has guided us here for a reason. We should explore our surroundings. There is...something here.
ATTON Something? Oh, there's something here all right - predators. Not small Flipdarters, but big, mean, nasty predators.
BRAYNAR He has a point for once. Dxun isn’t exactly a vacation spot this time of the year.
JADE All the more reason to get the hell out of here.
(Jade and Braynar exit.)
KREIA I have a feeling the ship will not be repaired until our business here is concluded. Do I make myself clear?
ATTON Yeah...I understand. What's so important about this place?
KREIA This is where the Mandalorian Wars began for her. She fought here once, and there are things here she must see.
ATTON She fought here? Why didn't she say anything?
KREIA Do you speak of all your battles? Or are there some you wish to forget?
(Onderon. Tobin’s ship.)
TOBIN You let the ship ESCAPE? I will deal with your failure later, Captain. But for now – find that ship.
RIIKEN Yes, Colonel.
TOBIN Our…ally has indicated that the Jedi hasn’t left the system yet. Send a detachment to Dxun. If you find anything, alert me immediately.
RIIKEN Yes, Colonel.
TOBIN Now get out of my sight!
(Dxun. Jungle.)
MIRA You thinking what I’m thinking? These jungles are filled with long narrow paths. Dumb beasts that just keep charging at you. This place is perfect for mines. If their carcasses were worth anything you could make a fortune.
BRAYNAR They’re not. Cannoks are like Jedi—they’re only worth money alive. And maalraas are like Sith—
VISAS Better off dead.
BRIANNA And no one wants them around.
*beeping*
ATTON Looks like the orbital fighting has ended. That Colonel Tobin stirred up a mynock’s nest when he took a shot at us. A couple of ships crashed nearby…so expect some company.
(The group sees the Zhug brothers’ ship.)
I’m still working on the repairs and I have to take down some systems, including sensors. So you’ll have to do without me for a while.
(The Zhug brothers approach the group.)
JADE Atton…
ATTON I know, you’re crushed.
ZHUG You have led us on a very fine chase, Hu-man. The battle above was your doing, yes? Our ship is quite damaged now.
MIRA Well, if it isn’t the Zhug brothers. Sorry, but this one’s my bounty, so keep those weapon barrels pointed down.
ZHUG Our quarrel is not with you, Mira. There is still a hunter’s truce, yes?
JADE Didn’t we meet some of your family back on Nar Shaddaa?
ZHUG Ah, you have heard of the Zhug family, yes? We are bounty hunters. Very effective, very famous.
MIRA And very dead, if you keep pointing those guns at us.
ZHUG Quiet, female. We will only speak to you with our blasters…if you are bold enough to break truce.
BRAYNAR You really think you can take on Mira? Good luck – she’s a REAL bounty hunter.
MIRA Sweet-talking me isn’t going to make me change my mind about you, Jedi.
ZHUG Another Jedi?
BRIANNA TWO other Jedi.
VISAS Make that three.
ZHUG 2 I think this fight may be too much for us, brother.
ZHUG Silence, brother! This has gone on for too long…you have caught the eye of someone very powerful on Onderon. And he wants you dead. But you do not need to worry about that now, Jedi.
(They fight. The Zhugs join their other brothers in Duros hell.)
MIRA It’s bounty hunters like the Zhugs that remind me why I don’t kill my targets.
JADE You don’t seem to hold back around me.
MIRA I know…I... I haven't killed anyone for a long time. But when I'm around you, suddenly it's like I've always been doing it. It's like a reflex.
BRAYNAR Are you all right? You feel…strange…
MIRA Look, before we get into a game of guess-the-pazaak-card, I don't really know you, all right? So kick it into reverse.
VISAS Refusing to kill weakens you, like restricting oneself to physical sight when one can feel the Force.
BRIANNA For once, I agree with the Sith. You should not hold yourself back in battle. Your enemy certainly won’t.
MIRA And here I was thinking that’s the difference between us and them.
(Group sees Tobin’s men. They watch them as the scouts talk.)
JADE Speaking of which…
OND. SCOUT 1 What happened to Laane?
OND. SCOUT 2 He got swarmed by those little beasts!
BRAYNAR Fool got outwitted by a bunch of cannoks. They’re the gizka of Dxun!
OND. SCOUT 1 I hope this mission is worth it…tell the colonel that we’ve reached the north-western continent, still no sign of the Jedi.
BRAYNAR Did she just say the north-western—
JADE Shh!
OND. SCOUT 1 Wait! Did you hear that?
OND. SCOUT 2 That’s her! Get them!
(The group fights the Onderonian scouts.)
BRAYNAR So THAT’S the outpost Atton was talking about…
BRIANNA What is HE talking about?
BRAYNAR I didn’t think it would come to this…but it seems the Force did bring us here for a reason after all.
MIRA Enough Jedi talk. What the hell are you babbling on about?
BRAYNAR I know who set up camp here.
JADE How?
BRAYNAR You could say we have a mutual acquaintance. But that doesn’t matter. He might be able to help us get to Onderon.
JADE Can you trust him?
BRAYNAR No. But he’ll get the job done, and if he betrays you, it’ll be to your face.
JADE That’s better than nothing, I guess.
(Braynar takes the lead.)
BRAYNAR There’s just one catch…
(Mandalorians decloak around the group.)
He’s a Mandalorian…
BRALOR Hold it right there. We’ve got you surrounded.
MIRA Great, just what we needed. Mandalorians. I feel right at home.
JADE You’re a Mandalorian?
MIRA As much as any slave becomes one. Does it matter now?
BRALOR No, it doesn’t.
(Visas flourishes lightsaber.)
VISAS You will let us pass, Mandalorian.
BRIANNA Keep calm. Their weapons are not raised. I do not think they wish to fight us.
BRALOR We’re not here to do battle, if that’s what you mean. I’m surprised you got this far – they jungle doesn’t usually let its prey go so easily. What are you doing here?
JADE What is it with Mandalorians and this damned moon?
BRALOR We claimed Dxun decades ago, when we reforged ourselves after Exar Kun’s defeat. Some of us call it home. Now answer my question.
JADE I was thinking of starting a Czerka office here. I sense a lot of untapped potential.
BRALOR That was a joke, right? It’ll be interesting to see how long you can keep your sense of humor here.
JADE We’re just exploring, all right?
BRALOR I’m Bralor, a Mandalorian warrior, and this area you're "exploring" is our territory. We have orders to escort you to our camp - our leader wants to speak to you.
JADE Well, you can tell your “leader” to—
BRAYNAR To expect us shortly. We’re interested in meeting with him, and we’ll come along peacefully.
(Mandalorian camp.)
CANDEROUS So YOU’RE the intruder Kelborn told me about. Our sensors picked up your handiwork in space.
KELBORN That was one hell of a battle you started. Tobin has his undergarments in a twist looking for you.
BRAYNAR It’s not me he wants, it’s her. I’m just along for the ride…again.
CANDEROUS HER? You don’t look like a Jedi.
JADE Strong words coming from…who are you, exactly?
CANDEROUS I’m Mand’alor, leader of the Mandalorians.
JADE But Revan killed Mandalore in the war.
CANDEROUS We’re like Jedi—kill one of us, and another takes his place. I’m Canderous Ordo, the NEW Mand’alor.
JADE Jade Travis, Visas Marr, Brianna, and you already know Braynar – which is how, exactly? CANDEROUS You could say we have a—
JADE “Mutual acquaintance”, yeah, yeah.
BRAYNAR We need to get to Onderon, Canderous. Tobin’s men are after Jade, and we think there’s trouble in Iziz.
CANDEROUS That all?
JADE I’m also wanted by the Exchange and whatever’s left of the Sith.
CANDEROUS Figures. You aren’t looking for Kavar, are you?
JADE How did you..?
CANDEROUS Where there’s one Jedi, there’s another one looking for him – or four, in this case.
MIRA Whoa, whoa, whoa, I’m not one of them. They’re all my bounty. This Kavar fellow too, if we find him.
CANDEROUS Whatever. You all look the same to me – trouble.
BRAYNAR I didn’t think you were one to back down from a fight, Canderous.
CANDEROUS Don’t even try to goad me, Jedi. Covert camps like mine are not meant to attract attention. Because we once conquered them, the people of Onderon still hold a grudge against the Mandalorians. So we keep our presence a secret.
BRIANNA And getting involved with us would ruin that secret.
CANDEROUS She’s smart for a Jedi.
JADE You will take us to Onderon.
CANDEROUS That’s not going to work. I’ve traveled with Jedi before, so I know all about your tricks – just ask your friend there.
BRIANNA You have been trained to resist certain Force techniques…that is very uncommon, especially for a Mandalorian.
CANDEROUS Jedi rely too much on their vaunted powers. Without the Force, would you be a match for even the lowliest of Mandalorian warriors?
BRIANNA The Echani understand combat far more than any simple Mandalorian, and we do not hide behind shells of metal as you do.
CANDEROUS Neverthless, I have something you need. And if you want ANYTHING from me, you’re going to have to convince me the old fashioned way.
VISAS The colonel’s men have already tracked us here, Mandalorian. As we speak, his forces are crawling all over this moon, and they will keep searching for as long as we are here. If you do not help us, it will only be a matter of time before they find your camp.
KELBORN The lady has a point, Mand’alor.
JADE So what will it be, Mandalore?
CANDEROUS All right, you’ve got me there. I may have a means of transport to Onderon, but it comes with a price.
JADE What price?
CANDEROUS I need assurance from you that the Republic will keep off my back.
BRIANNA Are you even in a position to—
JADE Done.
CANDEROUS And I'm going with you. I heard about Peragus – the Sith have taken a particular interest in you, and you could use an extra blaster. I've been meaning to leave Dxun to look for other Mandalorian clans, anyway.
JADE Isn’t Clan Ordo enough for you?
CANDEROUS Mandalore leads ALL of the Mandalorian people, not just a single clan. In order to revive our people the clans must be reassembled under me.
JADE I’m not sure I like the idea of the Mandalorians being reassembled.
CANDEROUS Why does everyone except Mandalorians hold grudges after battle? We were both tested, and your side proved more formidable. We honor you for it. And I'm going to look for the other clans with or without you. At least this way you'll have another ally against the Sith.
JADE Fine, done. Now it’s about time we get the hell off of this moon.
(Onderon.)
TOBIN General, we have found them again!
VAKLU Have we, Tobin? Or is this a preface to another of your failures?
TOBIN The crew of the Ebon Hawk is elusive, General. We were warned about that, but we still underestimated them. I ordered our most loyal men to take care of them...none have reported back.
VAKLU So we have not found them – is that what you’re saying?
TOBIN That’s not all, General. The fools are headed here…to Iziz. Some of our scouts overheard the Jedi make a deal with the Mandalorians on the moon. They will depart from Dxun within the hour.
VAKLU This is our opportunity. Order your troops to strike on the palace – now!
(Mandalorian camp.)
ZUKA The jungle is taking over everything! Fixing anything in this rot-infested place is an uphill battle!
(Three Sith assassins decloak.)
Mandalorians, we’ve got company! Stealthed targets have breached our perimeter!
(Fighting ensues. Bralor kills two Sith assassins and destealths.)
BRALOR You didn’t think you were the only ones with stealth field generators, did you?
(Cut back to the group.)
VISAS I sense – there is a disturbance in the camp.
CANDEROUS What did I say? Trouble. Looks like it follows you around everywhere.
(The group fights the assassins.)
BRALOR They didn’t just come out of nowhere, Mand’alor. They were here all along…watching…waiting…
KELBORN Mand’alor! News from Iziz! General Vaklu met with the Council of Lords and declared that the Queen is guilty of treason.
CANDEROUS He’ll be made Regent if Talia and her Royal Guards are defeated. The military is divided on who to support.
BRALOR I doubt that Queen Talia and her advisor will survive until nightfall.
CANDEROUS Civil War has fallen on Iziz. |
Might be a bit long, but I'm too happy with everything to cut it. Next issue will deal with the Onderon Civil War, and the assault on the Tomb of Freedon Nadd.
