but I want a banana tree!

Every since I visited that older ladies yard a couple of weeks ago I've been wanting one. :drooling: I would be so cool to have one out in the backyard someplace. Heck I might even get me a lounger and one of those fancy pineapple drinks and park myself under it.

I found out they have hardy banana's which is probably what she has but that is about all I know for now... :thkg:

I think they are really cool, too! I know you can buy them online. I love the big, tropical leaves.

From what I have read so far the Musa Basjoo is supposed to be the hardiest.
Thanks for the link A. I haven't seen this one yet. Can you believe there is a forum out there just for banana trees? No, I didn't join it.

I have more homework to do before I just dive right in. If they are one of those picky plants that require lots of pampering then I will have to forget it. Nowadays I don't have time to babysit a plant all through the summer months BUT I do love them.....

Maybe you need one around that new pond addition that you have going. B)

Here is my hardy banana tree.
I bought it last year when it was 16 inches tall. It grew to 30 inches by fall and I took it in doors for the winter were it just survived. This pic was just taken . It is now 9 ft tall. I will attempt to bring it in this winter but after that I think she will just get cut back and mulched in for the winter.

The one I saw at the ladies house was just like yours WW but older. She had probably 4 and all these little pups were at the foot. I should have asked her for a pup and I bet she would have been happy to give me one.

Thanks for posting. I somehow thought you would have one. :)

that's beautiful. If I thought one would survive in Texas heat I would get one. Dang!

Hey tlc that Black leaf Elephant plant you gave me did great until this crazy heat wave we had this summer. Don't know if it will come back next year. Think the tuber may have dried out to much. I tried to keep it watered but it was so hot you could almost see the water evaporate as I was pouring it on.

The bananas are tropical but don't know about your neck of the woods Whisper. :noclue: You get some serious sunshine down there. B)

I'm glad you enjoyed the plant. It sure wouldn't have made it at my place. Maybe your summer next year won't be as brutal (we hope)

An update here for what it's worth.
I have been looking at the idea of adding a palm tree either instead of or along with the banana tree. I am not sure where in the heck I will put them though. The planting season is getting closer so I better get to figuring that all out.

WW, I know you have a banana tree, do you have a palm as well? If so, how hard is it to take care of?

I do have two of those palm trees that Wallys World sell. They are about 2 ft. high and grow slowly so they are eazy to bring inside. Mine realy got abused last summer and they are no worse off. I found that they realy don,t have a high impact in the garden ,visualy.

My hardy bananna tree was too big to bring in this winter so I did what they told me and cut it back then mulched it heavy. We will see if it survives.
