Has anyone ever over dosed the lilies to the point were it has harmed them.
I have tried by experimentation but have only had good results. By OD I mean on one 18 inch round by 8 inch deep pot I placed about 10 tomato spikes. First time I ever heard a lily say "Thank you". :) |

No, I never tried. I have to be honest, I'm afraid to fertilize very much for fear of algae :o
Am I being overly paranoid? |

I have heard you can add one per gallon of container size.
Yes I believe I have. Last year I overdosed a little plant-let pinched off of a tropical tuber and it took forever for it to recover. I am assuming I burned the roots of which there were not many. Tia four weeks ago I dropped a tomato spike in the pond and for the life of me I could not locate it. Always a first time for everything they say. :swear: Pond is clear frogs are spawning and fish are fine. I would not recommend following my example but if you want blooms you better bury some tomato spikes or they will be far and few between. Experimenting with some tropical night bloomers this year just added today. They are very small almost tiny plants but should take off fast. I'm amazed at how fast tropicals mature and bloom. |

I guess I better get my hiny out there and do some fertilizing. My lily pads are puny looking things right now so I better quit being stingy with them.

And for the record, I would rather clean the toilet than to add fertilizer to my lily pots.

Tom
You will love the night bloomers. They actually open when you are at home. I remember watching one open in only 10 mins. I had to pay $60.00 for that plant which all ready had several buds on it. I figured it would be worth it if I could overwinter it. No luck |

Ouch! 60 bucks! Why are pond plants so expensive across the border?
I purchased two tropicals from a member of another forum for 20 bucks including shipping. She sent three plus two night bloomers and some frogs bit. What a deal. Tia elaborate what's the big deal? I enjoy wading the pond stopping to smell the lilies each having a different exquisite fragrance and letting the fish swim up to my hands. I don't particularly enjoy dead heading the spent blooms because it takes so long since I end up with a five gallon bucket full. |

Well if you have to know Froggy :) My top five list of reasons I hate it. 1) water gets in my boots and my feet get wet. I am a Oregon duck but I don't like pond water on my feet. 2) I don't like pond water in my arm pits. I bought some of those fancy aquatic gloves and thought I had it solved but oh no, can't be. They have holes at the top and sure enough I manage to get water down inside them. 3) I HATE and I mean HATE having all those aphids crawling all over me while I'm tending plants. It gives me the creeps  4) I'm not fond of having to shove my finger down into the pond to "plant" the spike. First I have to find a spot to shove, then shove my finger down which means I usually bend a nail backwards :swear: while making sure it's deep enough . Next I have to insert the spike which means I have to feel around for the hole I just made  . Then I get to insert the spike which means a cut up finger if I wasn't smart enough to wear gloves (I know hard to believe I would forget right). Then I get to try to cover the darn thing back up so it all won't leach out. 5) Make my way around all the obstacles without falling on my keester. Should be better this year since I have less pots. I think if I had to pick the one thing that I dislike the most it would be the aphids. I'm hoping this year won't be as bad. I am in full attack mode this year. :ph43r: :boxing: |

Well 1 and 2 I've had happen myself so I gave up on the gloves.
Number 3 don't have the creepy crawlers problem. Number 4 carry a short 3/8" wooden dowl to poke the hole once you locate a spot between tubers to save the nails. Number 5 have the hubby make a video of the plunge cause I wanta see that! |

I'm going to use a pair of gardening gloves next time and I'll arm myself with a wooden dowel. That way the dowel will serve two purposes, one to fertilize with and two to bonk the fish on the head when he/she gets in my way. :swimfishy: Dang little fishes. As for the video, you would have to pay for that  :faint: |
