 Pick Charmander as a starter. DO NOT let it evolve!!! Dont catch any pokemon at all throughout the game. Beat the game. Professor Oak will give you your rating and say: "You have not caught any pokemon! Would you like some?" Say yes. It should work with all the starters. Also, you get some pokemon automatically.
