Fumbling Towards Clarity, [ open thread ]

Fourteen years since she was given birth to, Kathryn Winters is cursing God, because the dude created karma or fate or whatever, right? Well, maybe not 'God' god, but a bunch of other deities who has yet to be proven to not exist. (She's open-minded about these things.)

It started with a letter.

Actually, it started with a bunch of new prophecies from those witches who will be her very first victims once she turned.

But the prophecies came to her in the form of a letter and Kathryn's just so spitting mad right now. See, those witches? They've just drawn the line. Now instead of just saying doom prophecies about her, they've also involved her hamsters. Something about how having a pet hamster was going to make her dreams come true. About how it's now tied to her fate, the life of the rodents. When she gets her hands on those witches, they have some explaining to do. Who the hell makes prophecies about hamsters? And she loved them, the little furballs, even if they keep dying on her A LOT, but having hamsters in a school of vampires and badass witches and maybe Clan Hunters just wasn't cool.

What the eff, she thought. What would Sebastian say?

There's no such problem trying to figure out what her roommates' thoughts were.

"Is that a rat!"

"No," she'd said, as patiently as possible. "It's a hamster."

"What - wait, you have so many!"

Duh, Captain Obvious.

"And they're spawning?"

"How many are there?"

Well, it was a pretty big cage. Last time she checked, there were about sixteen. She poked at the cage with the toe of her right foot, and it was an oddly sheepish gesture. The action sent the little furballs scurrying like nutcases.

"Oh my God, they STINK!"

"Why did you bring your pet rats here anyway!"

And she's so fit to be tied because THEY ARE NOT RATS THEY ARE HAMSTERS, OKAY?!?!

"I am so going to kill Daddy," Kathryn muttered, even as she dragged the cage by putting the cage on top of her bed sheet out of the girls' dormitory, because she's not carrying that, because she really is that small and tiny and the cage really is that big. Also, well, they really did stink. Not that she's ever admitting that. Not even a threat to the dentist will ever get her to admit that. Which, well, will power.

Same will power she's using now, to find her precious rodents a place to stay. Meaning Sebastian's room, because he's adorable like that.

Kathryn grimaced and gave one more tug.

It moved maybe an inch.

Now Lily on the other hand had no such thoughts, no such troubles. She had never had to worry about prophecies or hamsters (that do look rather like rats, especially onmasse). Her worries stemed from one thing: her family. Because of course there is no better idea than sending your rebellious teenage daughter off to a boarding school full of very odd people (because that's all they were to Lily, odd people with odd habits).

A perfect example was the girl pulling a cage full of some type of animal through the corridor on a bed sheet. I mean, seriously?

Now normally Lily would have walked past without saying a word, she was quickly discovering that ignoring the odd things people did around here was far far easier than anything else (in all honesty she couldn't call herself completely normal anyway). But there was something about this girl and the detirmination on her face as she moved a centimetre at a time.

The woods could wait for her.

It didn't take her long to get within speaking distance. "Hey," she called from behind. "Where are you taking the animals?"

You didn't think that she was going to offer to help did you? She's probably not much stronger than Kathryn in all honesty (despite the years of helping out on the farm). And anyway she only helps friends, she doesn't know this girl yet - she could be a complete bitch.

"Huh?" asked Kathryn, turning around in relief because, oh, look! Distraction! - something that Kathryn embraced with gusto since she were wee, and eyed the girl with interest. "Are you talking to me?"

Of course she's talking about me, Kathryn thought. Everyone cared about what Sebastian's Maddock's fiancée was up to, right? Part of the deal of being his fiancée. Honestly, Kathryn someone thought that being Sebastian's fiancée was so very, very tiring. She'd break off being his fiancée - except not really, because she loved him and he loved her, so what she wanted to really do was probably ask for some space - but she knew how much that would devastate him. Sometimes, Kathryn bemoan the fact her beauty was such a curse. Also, fiancée. Did she mention how she was Sebastian's fiancée? Because she was, you know. Honest.

That there was no other person carrying animals - plural, she knows - was noted a long time ago, promise. Kathryn's not dense. But internal monologue how she and Sebastian were engage was always something to engage in. Just in case there were mind readers a foot and the whole school needed to know some more how Sebastian was so very very taken off the single's market. 'Kay? 'Kay, moving on.

She smiled brightly at the girl.

"No i'm talking to the other girl pulling a cage of animals down the corridor."

If only Lily could roll her eyes...

Honestly who asked a question like that when it was clearly them the other person was talking about? Of course the girl might not have really been looking around her but that was hardly an excuse. Everyone knew that that was a stupid question surely.

Perhaps if it hadn't been such an odd sight Lily would have walked off at that point but she was interested now, she wanted to know exactly what the younger girl was up to.

(And if she had walked off perhaps all manner of things would have turned out differently, changed her whole life by not befriending this girl - and then again maybe Kathryn wasn't one of those crucial turning points. No one really knew, especially not the two girls standing in that corridor because the future hadn't happened yet remember.)

Lily might be curious but she still didn't return the smile. She was waiting for her answer.

"Well, no need to get snippy about it," Kathryn announced, feeling embarrassed at having been corrected or whatever. Whatever. It was clear that the girl didn't have a boyfriend like Kathryn did. And an EPIC love story for the ages. Clearly. Otherwise, it would have been obvious why she was distracted because girls in love were always like that. Just watch any teen flick movies and stuff. Like Twilight! And Gossip Girl! Yeah, good shit, those.

The smile was replaced with a frown as Kathryn turned back to tugging at her hamster cage, willing it to budge.

"I'm taking it to my boyfriend's room," she told the girl as she strained and pulled. She did her best to sound casual about it, like it was an ordinary thing to do, Oh, just taking it to my boyfriend's room. You know, things I do because he is my boyfriend. We are TOTALLY gonna MAKE OUT when I get there because we are in lurve, like that basically, except she thrilled at the fact she was calling Sebastian her boyfriend out loud and you can hear the giddiness just infusing her words at the end. Kathryn, feeling irked at herself, cleared her throat and hope the next delivery won't sound so ecstatic. It's just not cool. "He has one of those single rooms."

Hogod, she was going to be alone with Sebastian later.

What panties were she wearing today?

Inside the cage, four hamsters pooped and three rolled over in their sleep and about six curled around themselves and resembled furry ping pong balls. It's fraking cute. But they still smell.

Kathryn wondered if Sebastian would be okay giving each of the critters a bath.

And also, "You must know him. He's like, Head Boy here or something." So much pride in Kathryn's voice as she told Lily that. I R HEAD BOY'S GIRLFRIEND EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHH!!!1!!1!111!!!

Never mind that she's not.

What sort of guy would want a bunch of hamsters in their room? Clearly he was either insane or actually really loved this girl. Lily couldn't help but lean towards the former. Even if he was head boy.

"I'm new. So I haven't a clue who the head boy is."

And why on earth would the head boy be dating someone who looked as if they were a freshman? Of course she was just guessing but then this school did seem to be one of the oddest places she'd ever been.

Duh, thought Kate. Also, she was definitely whoa! The idea of a vampire not knowing who her boyfriend was was just mind blowing. Seriously? Elder Maddock? How could she not know? Hessokewt~!! !!

So, human. A very clueless human one at that.

"Oh, you poor thing!", Kathryn said, genuinely worried at the would be state of the girl she was talking with. If she kept up this whole 'I'm new' excuse, she's going to be dead by tonight. She looked around, biting her lower lip as her mind raced a mile a minute. She saw vampires, other humans, humans that looked like they could be vampires but could probably be hunters or just humans or could be hunters that were vampires. The possibilities were endless! Kathryn knows; she's pretty good at Stats. The point: this whole school, whether you were a vampire or a hunter or a human was not a safe place to be ignorant of stuff.

Even Kathryn, protected in the bubble of her daddy's awesomeness and dire warnings should something happen to her along with the fact she was Sebastian's girlfriend knew she herself wasn't safe.

In fact, she could be in danger right now.

Huh, she thought, turning towards Lily again, frowning heavily. All concern for Lily disappeared as Kathryn pondered her own safety. Was she a human pretending to be a hunter? Or was she a vampire pretending to be human while being a hunter but being a vampire would still be perfectly okay feeding on a defenseless human girl? Namely Kathryn.

Well, only one way to find out.

"And, oh~, hey!" Kathryn shouted, and raised her hand to give Lily a stinging slap.

It was a slightly odd sensation conducting a conversation with this girl, it was as if she was meant to know a hundred more things than she actually did and then was being pitied for it. Lily didn't think that she'd ever met someone like this girl before in her life, and she still wasn't sure whether that was a good thing or a bad.

Perhaps now was the time for Lily to leave and just leave this girl alone with her rats, let her struggle onwards to her boyfriend's room and just forget all about it. Perhaps eventually she would manage to find someone actually normal here.

Well she would have walked away if it wasn't for the fact that she suddenly saw a hand flying right for her face. Now Lily didn't exactly have the fastest reactions in the world so despite the fact that she tried to move out of the way the slap reached right across her face.

"What the fuck!?" Lily's hand was held protectively her cheek now as she looked at the younger girl in complete astonishment. "What was that for?"

She was definately crazy.

For answer, Kathryn tried to slap her again on her other cheek. Except this time, she stopped it midway, and looked, for a moment, like she was contemplating if she'll go through with it or not. Probably not. Her palm hurt, see? She doesn't want the other one to be in pain, too.

Lily has a really hard face, she thought.

And it's not like the other girl looked like she was ducking this on time. So, really, what's the point?

"Wow, you're slow," Kathryn said. Peering closer at Lily's face to see if she was healing quicker than Kathryn can blink, she became convinced the girl was 100% human when she saw the redness spreading and becoming darker, forming a hand print on her otherwise pale cheek. She dropped her hand, now knowing she wasn't going to get sucked on soon. "Are you okay?"

Their antics had not gone unnoticed. A couple of girls, vampires and humans, have stopped to stare at Kathryn Winters' latest wtfuckery. One vampire, knowledgeable about the capacity that Daddy Winters' wrath could wreck in the school, quickly stepped forward and offered a tight smile.

"What's going on here?" she asked, just as Kathryn had just finished asking her own question.

Lily just stared at her, I mean perhaps she hadn't managed to avoid the slap but you'd have to have super human reflexes or something to avoid that and perhaps she wasn't entirely human but that didn't extend to that sort of thing. She definitely didn't think that it warrented her being called slow though.

She was okay though, it was just going to sting a little. She'd been slapped before, she'd get over it as long as the girl didn't do it again as she had seemed likely to do only a second before. She was about to say that as well when the other girl stepped up.

Now Lily might not have exactly warmed to the odd girl in front of her but that didn't mean that some stranger should just but in. She lowered her hand and gave her a scathing look. "Who said it was any of your business?"
