Nora swayed at the question, and even now had recognized maybe she shouldn’t have done anything. At least, she convinced herself, at least you left the rest of the trunk outside. At least it’s closed, and its locked, and nothing in there is going to come out. “I made it. My brother and I with our cousins. It doesn’t even work.” This was only a half lie. They had made it themselves on a Halloween night, their oldest cousin known for selling bullshit magic out of a stall in the nearest city. They first tested it out in the woods, it had seemed fitting. Whether because neither of them were mediums or simply because spirits had enough sense to come to silly child witches like them, nothing had happened and they hid it away until the next Halloween after when it had given them more to awe over.

It was crude, made on a piece of polished wood found outside someone’s house, headed for the trash. It had taken hours, and more than a few bandages, to make the cuts after they’d brought up a picture on the internet. Nora had never been embarrassed about it before, though. Not when it had just been her and Alexander.

It was a rare moment when Nora would have liked to have her brother around, but she felt it now.

She bent down, laying the board and the handkerchief gently on Roxie’s bed, right next to the sweets that she’d brought from home. “Was it too much for her?” she asked, covering her mouth to keep from laughing too loudly. It was a good change of focus, and to be honest Nora was pretty surprised that Roxie had been the one to pass out. She certainly hadn’t seemed tired before, and if they had been taking bets Nora had to say she would have gone against Kate in a second without fear. This was a lesson, she supposed.

“I didn’t think I was gone that long.” Sometimes visions took her away for a second, and woke her up hours later. Nora didn’t mention that though.

There was no need to worry her friend.

Still being a friend, Kate just answered all the questions collectively with another shrug and a grin. By now, she figured whatever reason Nora had for taking so long had to be valid. There had been a lot of patrols in the dorm of late, and Kate was now rationalizing that must have been why. "It serves her right," she half-joked. "Come on. Let's give her something more to whine about."

She's cheerful now. With the window securely closed and Roxie not capable of making jokes about whatever questions Kate will ask, she was warming up to the idea of playing with an Ouija board that Nora has assured her didn't work. And Nora was there. Unlike Roxie, Nora seemed less enthusiastic about vampires in general. If a bloodsucker ever decided to join in, Nora wouldn't ask questions and just go right into trying to kill the bloodsuckers. (At least, this was what Kate hoped.) Besides that, if they focused on this, there was a good chance she can put out the smoke later, explaining how they needed to be lucid for whatever it was they were supposed to do lest they fall prey to astounding retardation. On purpose, it's cool. But when you just are? Yeah, Kate's not down with that. Making tits of themselves only work when both Nora and Kate have done the Bridesmaid movie thing of puking over one another's head and watching one take a dump on the sink. At the moment, Kate and Nora were close, but not that close.

(Mental note, thought Kate. Watch Bridesmaid for next movie night.)

"So? Like, do we have to do anything special?" She looked expectantly at Nora, blue eyes owlishly huge in the half dark. While she was eager for the Ouija board to keep not working, she didn't want to look obvious about it. She picked up what looked to be a marker of sort, turning it around and around, and convincing herself there was nothing to fear about it. Looked pretty harmless, really. Also? She knew who she'd turn to next time she ever decided to make a spice rack. It took a second to spit it out, admittedly, but it's still very sweet to see her do it. She's trying to be fun for Nora. Trying to be a good friend. "Like, I dunno... things?"

Outside, Caleb wished not for the first time he had the power of suggestive thinking. It's been a while since he'd watched a Satanic ritual abuse. These girls really needed to get high fast, he thought. Looking for the foothold he used earlier, he hoisted himself up until he was once again inches away from the window.

“Well like,” Nora started, deciding now was a good time to start pulling things out of her ass. “Here, you put that down here, at the bottom of the board, and we’ll both put our hands on it.” She brushed her hair out of her face and moved in closer to Kate, leading the marker down. This close, and with this much light, Nora could pick out all the flaws of the wood. A strange urge came to her, and she suffered to keep it down. Stroking the cracks in the board, well that wasn’t something that should be seen in public. Nostalgia might be mistaken for something else, such as mental instability.

Covering Kate’s hand with her own, she sighed and added, “Move over. Close your eyes or something.” She wondered, if she moved it herself, would her friend notice? It would be amusing, she thought. A joke if she was believed, though completely harmless in it’s own way. But then, her friend had a knack for noticing things.

But why not?

She’d begun to move them slowly, shaking only slightly, to the letter H.

It was here, for no other reason than she’d chosen to look up over Kate‘s shoulder, that she caught sight of a face in the window, and her imagination turned him into a pale, ghostlike being, complete with a story of terror and anguish. “What!?” she’d cried, and nearly fell over her friend in an attempt to get up.

It’s maybe as close to Bridesmaids as you’re going to get tonight.
