WITCH LORE

Humans said to draw from the power of the Earth, rather than from god. These humans have a very small amount of power, which can be used to make certain potions, scry, among other things. Again, their powers are VERY SMALL, and most witches generally stick to a small area of magic, as it takes years to perfect.

Witches are simply human beings who practice their own form of magic. They are not at all like hunters or seers, who draw their powers from a divine source, but rather draw their magic from the earth. They are, in all other cases, completely normal human beings, who are born as any other, and will die as any other. Generally, depending on magic and how their bodies handle it, they may live longer than your average human (but only by ten or twenty years), or die younger based on disease and misuse of magic.
A witch may be born with magic, or may practice and gain magic through careful study of magic and nature. It is generally rare to see witches who are also seers and or hunters as their magic will often be overpowered by their psychic abilities. Though, a few very determined and powerful hunters have managed to balance their magic with their gift.

MAGIC

Each witch may have his or her own specialty of power, and its very rare to see a witch master more than one ability. To attempt to learn more than one area of magic is straining on the body, as well as the mind and the soul, so even those who have mastered so don’t tend to live very long. Areas of specialty include:
Divinations and scrying: A form of precognition. Witches who practice this art may read the past or future in small, vague glimpses, or locate certain people with a personal item. May also use help aids, crystal balls, mirrors, coins, anything at all as long as it helps the witch focus their magic. Considered to have good intuition, based on their magic.
Charms and talismans: Considered “good luck/bad luck” witches. They can focus their energy on certain every day items, either negative or positive, and use that for themselves or others. Placement of items is also very important with this form of magic. Also can place magic on the spoken or written word, though building a structured and workable spell from pure language is very difficult and tends not to last long.
To note: these witches may focus on one form or another to be more powerful in that. Healers and curse makers are also versions of this witch.
Animal or plant affinity: Simply, an affinity with animals or plants. These witches may have one animal familiar and/or may be able to interact fairly well with most animals, or may have a sort of “sixth sense” with plants. Plant affinity may result in slightly speeded growth of plants, as well as more healthy.
To note: The animals and plants cannot speak to the witch vocally, nor can they speak to anyone else. Rather there is a more “understanding” between the witch, animals are generally more loyal to their witch and will protect them.
Also, slightly speeded does not mean a tree grows to its full height within a week. A plant that is effected by a witches magic will be more likely to grow up to be more healthy and fruitful than others.
Also, please keep in mind this is a Midwestern, American town, and don't make animal familiars some wild exotic animal. Domestic pets and wild animals commonly found in this region are just fine. And, this is a small town, and anything large or too uncommon will be noticed in public.
Mediums: Those which may speak to restless souls (basically: ghosts). With building of magic, some may be able to also see the image of these ghosts. Those born with this ability will often catch glimpses of “ghosts” as children, but not really be able to speak to them.
COMING INTO MAGIC

The question is: how do witches get their magic? Witches may be either born into a family with a natural affinity towards earth magic, or they will teach themselves based on careful study of nature and it’s power. There is virtually no difference between one born with magic and one taught magic. Those born with magic are likely to have extended from one witch who taught herself, and then passed magic through the family line.

Those born with a natural affinity towards earth magic may find coming into and mastering a certain power easier, but those more determined in teaching themselves can easily surpass one born into a family of magic, especially if that person has no knowledge or will to work and train themselves. Its impossible to tell one from the other.

However, witches can sense magic in each other. Rather, they are drawn, feel a certain pull, towards others with magic, especially if the other specializes in the same sort of magic as they do.

COVENS & FAMILIES

As said above, magic attracts magic, and most witches seem to find themselves drawn to each other in a certain way. Depending on their dynamic, witches may also form covens with each other. This is very different from hunter’s or vampire’s covens, as witches generally form small groups of two or three (three being the better number, more magical), rarely four. Also, witches do not need to be born into their covens, though some may prefer it this way.

Families of witches are simply witches who happen to be related to one another. A mother or father may pass magic to all of her children, which naturally may cause a sort of pull between children. Again, magic attracts magic.

Mothers tend to pass on magic more easily than fathers.

Children with parents who practiced magic do not necessarily grasp the concept straight away. Should the child not be interested in learning, they could lose or find their abilities dormant.

Again, it is incredibly rare to find a hunter who also has the time to practice magic. They may be born with both gifts, but generally one overshadows the other. As is same with seers and witches.

Vampires cannot practice earth magic, they are simply unable to, it is a human ability and only a human ability. A witch turned into a vampire, however, is likely to have a power very similar to whatever magic they practiced. Still, this witch-turned-into-a-vampire will not be able to practice their craft in the same way. Again, vampires cannot be witches.

To note: yes, MALES can be witches too. So may females.
