Xia Class Submarine 1 12 x JL-1 ype 092 (Xia Class) Ballistic Missile Nuclear Submarine The Type 091 (NATO codename: Han class) is China's first generation nuclear powered attack submarine (SSN) built by Huludao Shipyard in Huludao, Liaoning Province. A total of 5 boats (401 to 405) were built between 1967 and 1987. Currently these boats are deployed in the PLA Navy North Sea Fleet based at Qingdao. China is reported to be building the next generation nuclear attack submarine (Type 093) to replace the obsolete Type 091. PROGRAMME The Type 092 (NATO code-name: Xia class) is China's first and only ballistic missile nuclear submarine (SSBN). The boat greatly increases the survivability of China's strategic nuclear forces during a preemptive nuclear strike by the enemy, and provides Chinese leaders with a reliable means for nuclear retaliation. Apparently such a capability would also greatly strengthen China's deterrent posture. The first ship Changzheng 6 (406) was launched in 1981, and became operational in 1983, though the JL-1 submarine launched ballistic missile (SLBM) did not conduct a successful fire test launch until 1988 due to problems with its fire-control system. A second ships was reportedly constructed and later was lost in an accident 1985. The first test launch of the JL-1 SLBM took place on 30th April 1984 from a submerged pontoon near Huludao. Second missile launched on 12 October 1982 from a Golf class diesel trial submarine (pennant 200). The first launch from Type 092 in 1985 was unsuccessful, delaying the final acceptance into service of this submarine. It was not until 27th September 1988 that a satisfactory launch took place. Currently the only boat 406 is deployed in the PLAN North Sea Fleet based at Qingdao. It started a major modernisation upgraded in late 1995 at Huludao Shipyard and the programme completed in 2001. The upgrades reportedly include replacing the original JL-1 SLBM with the improved JL-1A, which has an extended range of 3,000~4,000 km. With only one single Type 092 SSBN, it is not possible for the PLA to establish an effective underwater nuclear strike capability, which can guarantee that at least one boat is ready to launch at any time. However, the boat served as a stepping stone in the development of a more comprehensive Chinese nuclear-powered, submarine launched ballistic missile (SSBN) force in the future. Operations of the Type 092 SSBN have been limited and the boat has never sailed beyond Chinese regional waters. Despite a potential for operations in the Pacific Ocean, capabilities would be very limited against modern Western or Russian ASW capabilities. INVENTORY Pennant Name Fleet Laid Down Launched Commissioned 406 Changzheng 6 North Sea Fleet 1978 04/1981 1987 DESIGN FEATURES The Type 092 SSBN was derived from the Type 091 (Han class) SSN, with a lengthened hull to accommodate 12 JL-1 SLBM launch tubes. COMMAND SYSTEM The Type 092 may be fitted with a multi-purpose combat data and command system which provides information for submarine control and torpedo firing. The boat also has a fire-control system for SLBM aiming and firing. Type 092 Xia class SSBN MISSILES The Type 092 carries 12 Ju Lang-1 (Ju Lang = Giant Wave, NATO code-name: CSS-N-3) or modified JL-1A SLBMs. The missile uses inertial guidance to a maximum range of 2,150km, and carries one single 250kT nuclear warhead. TORPEDOES The Type 092 has six 533mm bow torpedo tubes, and carries a total of 12 Yu-3 (SET-65E) torpedoes (active/passive homing to 15 km at 40 kt; warhead 205 kg). RADAR The Type 092 has an I-band surface search radar (NATO code-name: Snoop Tray). SONARS The Type 092 is fitted with Trout Cheek bow-mounted, medium-frequency sonar for active/passive search and attack; and a DUUX-5 low frequency sonar for passive ranging and intercept. COUNTERMEASURES Countermeasures include a Type 921-A radar warning receiver and direction-finder. PROPULSION The Type 092 is powered by a nuclear, turbo-electric arrangement, consisting of one pressurised water reactor (PWR) rated at 90MW, with 2 shafts. Xia 092 SSBN 406 ![]() |
