Alrighty folks, the long-awaited Doom 3 is still finally around, not sure if it's out yet, but I've just finished playing through the demo. The first thing I'll note; The demo is pretty damn long, for a demo.
Overall, I LOVE the game. It's like the previous DOOM titles, but with a bit more of a horror atmosphere, and with some of the nice qualities of Deus Ex added in. Items look more like a part of the background. There is plenty of info to gather up and keep around in case you can figure something out from it. Yet....at the same time, there are bogies jumping out from crawlspaces and trying to beat your head in with a monkey wrench. Some of you old-school DOOM fans will be happy to hear that a lot of the enemies I encountered in the demo are basically new versions of classic DOOM enemies. You've got the lumbering idiots who are basically cannon fodder...you've got the fireball-flingers...and you've got the security guards with shotguns and whatnot. Classic! And that, my friends, is exactly why DOOM 3 gets a high rating from me. It's old DOOM, but with all of the graphics and game features that have been brought around since DOOM 2. It's great. If you've got an awesome computer that can run it worth crap, be sure to pick it up. Admittedly, on a Pentium 4 laptop with a decent graphics card, it chugged once in a while...at minimum settings. As you can guess from that, it's got pretty great graphics and runs incredibly smoothly. Even if you don't like the game itself, it's some great eye-candy, AND it has an awesome atmosphere. I was to the point where if I heard something move, I'd pause and look around and shoot anything that moved. Was fun! Finally...a tip for anyone who wants it. If you're paranoid like me and like to make sure corpses aren't going to get back up and bite you in the ass...use the flashlight. Admittedly, if I find a corpse already there when I get there, I shoot it from a distance, but if I /know/ I'm the one that took it down, I creep up and whack it with the flashlight. For some reason, it takes about 7 pistol shots to get rid of a corpse, but only one or two whacks with the flashlight. Very useful. ^_^ Saves ammo, too! Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Wish I could run the full game. Don't want to give my comp a hernia, though. -------------------- Pieces pieces, all gone!
