Hello All.

I received my first Warhammer Fantasy starter set back Christmas '95 (was that 4th edition? Goblins and Elves)... life (and death) kept me from ever actually getting to play, so the set mostly sat around in closets for the past several years.

I guess I would say I'm a long time potential player finally getting around to trying to paint again before I commit to an army and playing. Previous attempts were, how can I say this nicely....complete and utter crap. My son's 1 and could probably do a better job than my originals turned out. Vomit.gif

So, since I dug out that old box set I figured I'd start by trying to paint up what I already have to see if I've got the patience for it before I begin. Right now, I'm working on a few goblin archers and spearmen and trying to strip down my old Chaos Beastmen.

With that said, if I do stick with it, how are Orcs & Goblins for a new player, both in terms of fun and competitiveness? I'm not really worried about the competitive aspect, it looks like Wood Elves (for example) were pretty much unplayable right now, so I just want to avoid that sorta thing.

Way back when, I was dead set on a Chaos army. Here recently, I've considered the idea of Dwarves, Skaven, or going back to Chaos, but now I'm really thinking Orcs look like alot of fun. (That and the fact that I've got 30ish minis already on hand if I can get them looking semi-decent).

Welcome to Da Warpath and the wonderful world of Warhammer! (Alliteration FTW) biggrin.gif

O&G are pretty good right now, certainly not broken either way. It's a fun army, but sometimes quite a random one. Every time I lose I feel like things could so easily have went differently had I only just made that one dice roll back in turn 3 or whatever...but that might just be my incompetence! tongue.gif

And Woodelves aren't unplayable, either. First rule of Warhammer forums: Never take anything that anyone says as face value. Especially not on larger forums like Warseer. People have a tendency of blowing things out of proportion... smile.gif

Anyway, once again, welcome!

Welcome back to the hobby and the warpath.

O&Gs are still a solid army that you will have lots of fun with. We can have all types of builds from heavy competitive to just plan crazy so juist have fun building what you like.

+1 On the woodelves are not unplayable but they do need to be used in certain ways to make that so.

Maybe I shouldn't have said "unplayable", would "more difficult" be a better term? But yeah, warseer or similar is where I got the "unplayable" impression from.

I'm hoping to get some more painting done today. I felt brave and went with some craft store paints, which quality-wise seem decent, but there's no way I'm gonna be able to get all my color blending and matching to be consistent.

I think I need to trim my brush hairs shorter too...

Bah, Warseer. Don't trust that site. I play Wood Elves and I like them a lot. I would not recommend them to a beginner though, since they are kind of tricky to play well.

You have done well in choosing greenskins. They are really fun to paint and model, and funny and not too difficult to play. If you want a competitive list you can read some in the army list section of these forums, but the best way to find what's good is by trial and error.

Welcome to da green side of war yarr.gif
I have to second the wood elf thingy as well as the whineseer one.
A friend of mine plays WE since 5th edition and he´s pretty successful with his tree huggers. They are hard to play and he sometimes rages about certain match ups but in the end he´s able to win a lot of games. WE are no top tier army for sure but they are far away from being unplayable. smile.gif

As I'm working on painting what I've got, I'm thinking about what else I should get to fill out a generic "core" of troops - core in the sense of "stuff I'll use" and not so much per the rules "core units". I don't have a theme or plan yet, so I'm trying to keep things pretty generic and flexible.

Right now I've got:

32x Gobos w/ Bows (Night goblins? From the 4th Ed. box set)
32x Common Gobos w/ Spears (and some shields loose in a box)
1x Orc Warboss w/ Boar (not assembled)

Mostly checking out Ebay and the like for deals. I've got bids/offers in on some BfsP Night Gobo Archers, Fanatics, Wurrzag on a Boar, Gobo Wolf Riders, a River Troll, and a Goblin Command set.

Any other recommended pieces I should keep an eye out for? Specifically things like "yeah, keep 5 of these, 10 of those on hand" - that sort of thing where it's generally useful and won't break the bank.

Orc's I just don't know which way to go - common, savage, black, etc. - need to do more reading before I decide.

Machinery & Artillery I'm kind-of holding off on due to $$ and just generally not knowing what I want.

In time, I'm pretty sure I want to pick up a pump wagon and some squigs, but beyond that, I'm not sure.

Droping some money on a Doom diver is never a bad Idea as they are just amazing and fun.

I think I'm going to pick up some orcs this weekend. Any suggestions on which set to get some bang for buck?

Scratch-building one isn't difficult either. Then drop less money on some crew. smile.gif

Savage Orcs are generally considered the best regular infantry block we've got. Both regular Orc Boyz and Black Orcs can be loads of fun too. smile.gif

This is something I might have to look into. Historically, I've not been terribly crafty but with it being kinda rugged gobliny, I might be able to pull that off. Especially since I picked up some stuff for wood carving to try my hand at too.

So I'm reading that as "all the above" which is kinda what I was thinking (and afraid of). I think I need to start plotting points and a spreadsheet to see what it looks like on paper so far.

I got a bit carried away on ebay, though I think overall it's been good to me.

welcome aboard the boards. waagh.

if you are going for a "fun" army the greenskins are the best with unmatchable variety in choices, check out the handbook in the tactics section to guide you if you want the more competitive army.

WAAAGH!!!! Got some loot for our wedding anniversary today. I love my wife and apparently she loves me.

2x Orc Regiments (19 Orcs per box, command, standard, musician)*
10x Black Orcs
10x Goblin Spider Riders

*Why did they do 19 Orcs in a box instead of 20 though?

With what I've got coming in off ebay and this, I think I'm up to around a 1500pt army now. Not a "useful" 1500pts, or even a thought out 1500pts.

Hmm...maybe I am a Greenskin...a random hacked together group of troops thirsty for battle.

I'll post up my full army here in a bit.

Here's what I've got so far, and kinda how I think I'd configure the units based on what I have. I've really got nothing (except bows) for ranged combat or heavy artillery yet.

If my math isn't too far off, this should be around 1495 points as written below with no magic items, etc. Too much assembly and painting to deal with before I really hunt anything else down.

I do have a Warboss box (newer one, w/ the boar and the stand alone figure) that I'm not sure how to use, so he's not included on this list yet either.

Lord 1 24.8%
Hero 0 0%
Core 8 61.9%
Special 2 13.3%
Rare 0 0%

1 x Wurrzag Da Great Green Prophet
Equipment: War Boar

19 x Orc Boyz
Group Options: Musician, Standard Bearer, Champion
Equipment: Additional Hand Weapon; Big'Uns

19 x Orc Boyz
Group Options: Musician, Standard Bearer, Champion
Equipment: Shield, Spear

5 x Forest Goblin Spider Riders
5 x Forest Goblin Spider Riders

33 x Goblins
Group Options: Champion, Musician, Standard Bearer

30 x Night Goblins (w/ bows --change points?)
Group Options: 3x Fanatics

20 x Goblins
Group Option: Standard
Equipment: Spears

10 x Black Orcs
Group Options: Champion, Musician, Standard Bearer
Equipment: Shield

1 x Trolls

Not in the list:

1x Orc Warboss & 3x goblin wolf riders
