Hey guys,
I started my OnG army last summer but got sidetracked, after looking at the 30 models on my shelf last week i decided to get back into it. As some might have seen i also posted a first armylist to work up to. Now after reading the buttload of information on these forums, i decided that the list i made is not what i would like to do. before i make some choices and go buy some stuff i had a cople questions. - As i'm dead set on some black orcs i was wondering what would the optimal unit size be ? - i'm thinking of only fielding 1 goblin unit , the night goblins , what unit size would be optimal and how many fanatics is too many ? (planning on making this a tarpit unit with netters)- i read alot of mixed feelings about black orc characters, now i was thinking of making a bsb BLorc and put him in a savage big un unit is this too dangerous cos of the frenzy or rather a good solution? - and the last question before i keep on rambeling are boar boyz better in small (5 orcs) units or better as big (10+ orcs) units ? thanks for the responses to my (stupid?) questions. hi welcome
Depends what you want with them. You can either use them as a hammer, then you looking at 30+ (or 40+ if you go horde formation). alternatively they are used in smaller units as monster hunters. (10-15 with flaming banner).
For a tarpit you should be looking at 50+. As this is your only NG unit i would go for either 2 or 3 fanatics. Just keep in mind that they can get seriously in the way if you want to slam something in the flank of the unit you are fighting.
I prefer them as small suport units. So i go for 5-7. But that really depends on what you want them to do. 10 gets quite expensive and imho does not make them that much stronger. This post has been edited by BorkBork on May 10 2012, 01:39 PM |

Hello and Welcome.
Black Orcs, it really depends on what role you want them to fulfil in your army. I typically use them as Hammers/Monster Hunting unit. 20-25 with FC and Banner of Eternal Flame and either keep them 6" behind an Anvil/Tarpit or deployed opposite what you want them to kill (Hydra/A Bomb ect) Night Goblins, Since they're essentially a tarpit I would also go 50+ with Nets and the full whack of 3 Fanatics to do some damage to whatever has charged them. I also give them spears for some more attacks. BOBSB, hmmm interesting, its always worth having a BSB near frenzied troops. It wont completely allieviate the issue but it'll hold it in check a little more. Boar Boyz - Both unit sizes work to be honest. They just fulfil different roles on the tabletop. 5 will be anti-chaff and warmachine hunters. 10 Will be a hammer unit to slam into a flank/rear of a unit thats trapped in your tarpit |

Heloo!!! and welcome!!
Right, about 25, about 30-40 with maybe 2 Fanatics and some netters (optional, I never use them) If I use my Black Orc BSB I bung him into the BO unit, but yours could be a good tactic, try it for yourself using soem proxy miniatures see how it goes! Boar Boyz, love 'em I use anywhere between 10-15 of them with spears (much better than hand weapons) but others will disagree with unit size. 5 is less than optional as it won't negate ranks and faces the prospect of becoming a greasy stain on the battlefield rather quickly.Hey, there are no stupid questions, just stupid people. If you don't know something, or are unsure it's always better to ask!! anyone that derrides you for it is an idiot. And once again Sirrah, welcome aboard, mind the step and don't spit into the wind! |

thanks for the welcomes,
the Blorcs i do wanne make into a none horde hammer unit so 25-30 depending on the points i got left seems the best choice, on a side note if i do get in a 30 strong unit is it best to field it 5 or 6 wide? with the night goblins you guys bring up the 2 unit sizes i was doubting between 40 or 60 strong. 40 seems enough but then i think 3 point goblin youre talking about here :/ as you guys sound positive i'm gonne keep the BLorc BSB in the savages for the bsb reroll and quell animosity and prob put in a savage shaman with the shrunken head to make it last a bit longer. now the boar boyz (from what i read and my exp with similar troops in other armies) both 5 and 10 are viable but if i go 10 arent i going to get 3 hammers 1 tarpit some charachters and some rares? for some reason that doesnt sound that balanced... hmm this is a hard one :/ |
