Ong Player Survey

Hi all. I am conducting a mini player-survey, the results of which will appear in the next edition of DWQ.

To take part simply answer the following questions. The deadline is 30th september, the reason this is so close is to make it in time for next months DWQ.

SECTION 1: THE ARMY BOOK

1. What is your favourite unit or troop-type in the book?
This can be based on background fluff, personality, special rules. etc. Can include war-machines and monsters.

2. What is your favourite colour illustration in the book?

3. What is your favourite black&white/sepia illustration in the book?

SECTION 2: THE MINIATURES

4. What is your favourite OnG character model?
This is by no means limited to GW, can include Gamezone, Avatars of War etc. Even figures OOP.

5. What is your favourite OnG boxed-set?
Can include regiment boxes, war-machines, large monsters etc. Again not limited to GW, can also include boxed-kits OOP.

Feel free to add comments explaining your choices. I may even use some as quotes in the final article.

EDIT: To clarify a couple of things...

For the purpose of calculating results you only get 1 vote per question. You are welcome to mention other stuff you like, but only your first preference will count toward the final vote.

For box sets such as the Orc Boyz (that changed in size) I am going to say votes should be based on current box-size, ie. 11 models not 19.

Section 1: Army Book

1. Fav unit: (Savage) Orc boar boyz. Gameplay wise they may not be (or have ever been) the most point effective, but these models truly capture orcyness for me. I've never gone to battle without them and probably never will, I owe it to them to at least make room for five. When I was considering picking up warhammer years ago I liked the way a friend described the OnG play style, still not knowing too much about the game yet models were a huge factor as well and these boyz were what convinced me as much as anything else. I love their wild, ferocious appearance and just riding to battle on an uncontrolable stampeding boar, which may or may not be eaten afterwards, is bound to be an amazing sight!

2. Fav color pic: This question didn't even require me browsing through the book, it's the huge orc on p.20 (I did had to look that up:)) which also adorned our 6th ed. army book cover.
A proper massive orc brute embellished with some leftovers of his former foes. I really like the eyecatching main model (got to love this interpretation too) and the violent, grim (and maybe a little slow-witted) look in its eyes. Still a great picture, strong composition and the feel of destruction and mayhem in their wake is almost tangible.

3. Fav B/W pic: The picture of Azhag The Slaughterer. Tough choice between that and the 2-page sepia drawing on the inside of the book's cover (and back) (hey it's technically in the book right!).
The reason I picked Azhag is because it looks really dynamic and you get a good feel of what it's probably like sitting on a warhorse adorned in castle-forged steel armor when a huge wyvern with a bellowing orc on top descents from the sky to ruin your day. Honey, I wont be home for dinner.

Section 2: Miniatures

4. Fav char: A tie between the (old?) hooded orc shaman with his big bone staff (you know which one) (Games Workshop) and the orc berserker (Avatars of War).
Edit: If I've to pick just one I'll go for the shaman. Even if it's not the most dynamic miniature I still think it's really a quality model, doing a great job at representing a fickle, grim wielder of da Great Green. But the Berserker being such a close second really deserves a honorable mention for me.

5. Fav boxed set: I'm going to have to go for the old (19) regular orc boyz set. Eventhough I love (SO) boar boyz and black orcs etc you can't really do much else with them, I feel the common ladz set is/was a really nice deal as it came with plenty of parts and there's nothing wrong with their look either. Although a little more pose/facial expression variety is always welcome, at least the first can be easily solved with some conversions and a little creativity and the leftover spears/handweapons make great bits which can be recycled as extra adornment for other orcs/chariots/etc...
Edit: I can't really comment on the "new" regular orc boyz (10) box as I've not bought one yet, I stocked up before. I assume you just get the same parts just fewer/half. Actually I would still want to stick with my choice for the aforementioned reasons, but leaving the price the same and cutting its (non updated) content by half is just ridiculous. So I'll go for the new savage orc boyz box.

1. What is your favourite unit or troop-type in the book?

I'm gonna choose two I am afraid and that would be both the common Goblin and the generic core Orc boy. These are what I beleive make up the majority of all waaagh's. You can call me an Orc and Goblin snob if you wish but I feel that most peoples armies are not very representative of a proper Orc and Goblin Force. People usually opt for minimal core and go for the more exciting choices instead. In many ways this may make their force more competitive but to me they probably only feel the need because every one else is doing the same - even those in other armies. I like to tell myself that I am encouraging opponents to come with more realstic forces of their own to fight me.

For me its all about the core and not userper Night Goblins. Night Goblins belong in caves under mountains and not on the surface as the most played Goblin. Whats that all about anyway? One day I would love to see the Common Goblin being used more widely.

As for Orc's, You can even pay a little extra to turn one of your blocks of core Orc's in to Big Un's too. Big Un's look great if youv bothered to spend the time on the conversions. (see my blog) They may not be quite as good as Black Orc's but mine certainly get a few looks when I take them to a battle. Besides Black Orc's are the spawn of Chaos Dwarf's *spits on the ground*

2. What is your favourite colour illustration in the book?

With out a doubt it has to be the Orc mob on page 10 of the army book. This to me captures the essence of an Orc mob - its just how I want my Orcs to look. A close second would be the Night Goblin one on page 15 despite them being Night Goblins.

3. What is your favourite black&white/sepia illustration in the book?

The Goblin on page 42. He's common and he's obviously kicked some Bretonnian Knights butt. I even made a representation of it in da-warpath's boss conversion competition. (see my blog)

4. What is your favourite OnG character model?

Its a hard choice as there are so many to choose from. I suppose it has to be the Aracknarok model - purely on asthetic grounds.

Edit: I just realisedyou wanted a character. Well then it has to be Grom. He's fat and he's in a chariot. Whats not to like? Despite him being old and all.

5. What is your favourite OnG boxed-set?

This was the Orc boy box but it reduced in size content. I suppose I would have to choose the Common Goblin box now. Not only do you get quite a few of the little bleeders but you get some spare legs that were designed for the wolf rider box. You can use those legs to make Goblins that are sitting down, jumping up and down or getting a 'backie' off of one of his mates. I made some just like these for a unit filler/diorama. (see my blog to see) Whats that, no hand weapons I hear you say? Well so what? My Common Goblins do not make many of their own, they steal them from Skaven or Dwarf's. I am even working on a largish unit now with Skaven and Dwarf hand weapons. I do have a slight gripe about the shields and fitting them all together on their movement tray but that defiently not a first for GW models.

I absolutely LOVE Wolf Riders. The models and the rules in combination- this is mainly because fast units is something I think are fantastic for lots of different uses, and they are Fast Cavalry.

The oversized Goblins and their grins of death just makes me want to use them all the time.


2.

Page 15, because I love the mix of "heroic" leadership along with the ragtag weapons, armor, grins and general sneakyness.

3.

The Goblin Shaman on page 43, altough the common Goblin on page 42 is a close second place. However, I love the pure unload of WAAAGH he's got going there!

4.

Skarsnik, by far. Look at him! Look at Gobbla! So perfect.


5.

Common Goblins because I love how unique you can make the characters look with light converting. Also the Giant, because you get so many fun things to play around with.

1: favourite unit from the armybook
Doom divers: there are unfortunate casualties and it's a sad way to go for a goblin but in the short and miserable life they normally lead, bullied by Orcs, eaten by trolls or stomped upon by Giants it's not that bad to be a Loony Also a quite unique war machine ruleswise. Who else has flapping goblins?!?!

4: favourite models: characters
Hooded Orc Shaman. Brian Nelsons made many masterpieces and redefined what Orcs looked like, but this is one of his best. Still in our book after all those years (at p.79 painted by Neil Green)

5: favourite models: boxed sets
Normal Boar Boys! Great value, lovely models and finally a dynamic sculpt. Really oozes the threat that 500 pounds of smelly Orc and/or Boar poses!

This is what i fink:

1, Savage Orcs! I really love the stone-ageyness and magic mumbo jumbo theese guys represent!

2, My favourite color pic, would have to be the one on page 3 (?), the page that says "Orcs & Goblins" on the top. This is because I think it catches the OnG spirit, with the big brutal orc, and the smaller sneaky goblin using his bigger cousin as protection xD

3, The savage orc on page 40. Nothing could be more awesome than that stone age Waaagh! with a stone spear, leaping from a rock!

4, My favourite character would have to be the boar mounted savage orc shaman, I think it catches what Savage orcs are all about, mumbo jumbo magic, tokens and a bad attitude!

5, As you can probably figure out, my favourite boxed set, is night gob... SAVAGE ORC BOAR BOYZ! Stone age boar cavalry ftw!

Orc Boar Boyz. They just seem quintessentially Orcy to me, and were the reason for me pursuing an all mounted theme.

2. What is your favourite colour illustration in the book?
6th edition army book cover, p20. Love it.

3. What is your favourite black&white/sepia illustration in the book?
Wolf Chariots, p 46.

4. What is your favourite OnG character model?
Gorbad Ironclaw. Exquisite sculpt that will take a long time to be surpassed.

5. What is your favourite OnG boxed-set?
Wolf Riders. The sculpts are showing their age, and I've had to seriously rework them with heaps of Green stuff, but they have such a place in my heart I can't help but vote for them.

Orc Boyz. Core troops that embody the spirit of the army.

Skull Pass pp30-31. I like that it captures the moment of the charge, also unlike some battle-illustrations which are quite distant here the viewer is very close.

3. What is your favourite black&white/sepia illustration in the book?
Orc Boar Boy. I like the sense of movement and the way he is charging at the viewer.

Wolfchariot UNITS....I have always been a great fan of the look of large chariot units both in fantasy as historical gaming.

He is way too small for current standards, but i he has a certain nonchalant determination over him that is just fantastic.


5. What is your favourite OnG boxed-set?
Hard one, as i am not really a fan of most boxed sets (and i dont have that many of them to be honest). But atm i am really happy with the seperate hands from the savage orc (foot) set, so my not so convinced vote goes to them.

SECTION 1: THE ARMY BOOK

Big Uns, of any type or configuration, but since that's an unit upgrade I reckon it doesn't count.
Hence I vote for the Squig Herd. It hits hard, has an acceptable Initiative, is immune to psychlogy, and yet it's cheap, disposable, dangerous when broken (Squigies go BOOOM!) AND still a very Nightgoblin-y unit. Aye, very Nightgoblin-y, ye heard me right!

The Cover Art from Battle for Skull Pass p.30-31, as it captures both armies found in the box quite well. The picture is fine for going so close into the fray. Some might prefer the large tableaus (like on page 4 or 5) with lots of faceless troops arayed in the background or even merely hinted at, where your fantasy can run wild and imagine things, but I like close and personal. (And I should 'ave gotten a second box while they lasted... oh, well.)

Goblin Warboss on page 42, as the lil fella captures that sucessfull Goblin spirit: looted weapons and armour, and a boastful, bossy attitude...

SECTION 2: THE MINIATURES

The old Grom the Paunch, for he is one Goblin with attitude, nay the entire Grom's Wolf Chariot Kit from that time, including Niblit. A large goblin with a larger ego and an even larger chariot (and Niblit) to compensate for that. What's not to like about that?

If OOP boxes were included, I 'd say Battle for Skull Pass, even tho' it heralded the era of imbalance and silliness known as 7th edition. And who doesn't love a large deal like that? A 2nd OOP box that I love would be the Nightgoblin box from late 5th to 6th edition.
But since we focus on unlimited supply, I 'd say Mantic's Gore Riders, as they include the best boars produced so far and at an affordable price. If it's only GW that counts, I 'll go with the Arachnarok - even tho' I don't own one yet - as the beastie has tons of character and many options going for it, and that's what I like about extras, the more exotic, the better.

The main-stay of my army. They misbehave, they aren't brilliant at anything but they look great and they are cheap, so I can have loads of them!

I know everyone thinks he looks goofy but I just love the model. Skullmuncha is a cracking wyvern too.

Orc Boyz again.
In my book, they are the most satisfying models to build, convert and paint - especially when combined with (40K) Ork Boyz, greenstuff and a load of random bitz!

@Morgrim: Yeh you can vote OOP OnG box sets if you wish. Hell I was tempted myself to vote the original Ruglud's armoured Orcs, though putting nostalgia aside I do think the new plastic kits are somewhat better. As with characters it doesn't need to be a GW-product. So Mantic is fine.

*If any mods are reading this I was wondering if someone could move this thread to the Stronghold? In hindsight I think people would be more likely to notice it in there. Cheers!

Squig Herd: Great figures, absolute madness, really good to paint and not too shabby in the rules either. What more can you say.

2. What is your favourite colour illustration in the book?
The Orc Boys on page 10. An oldy but a goody; nice and dynamic.

3. What is your favourite black&white/sepia illustration in the book?
Orc Boar chariot on Page 38. Nicely achieves the 'rickety but dangerous' look but, much as it pains me to say it is the best of a mediocre lot. I think the TK book has much better art throughout

4. What is your favourite OnG character model?
I like a lot of the goblins but the 'Night gobin boss with sword and shield is my favourite' - as decribed on the GW website.

5. What is your favourite OnG boxed-set?
I'm more shocked that some people have voted for what I view as terrible sets (I will continue my lone crusade to get the common goblin bow arms re-done - they're all left handed!). But anyway, as a boxed set I'm going to go for the doom diver, won over by the great little grot with the hammer. The night goblin box loses out due to its lack of convertability as a plastic boxed set.
