The island of Sartosa is once more the centre of attention for more than just pirates and their victims. A massive Storm of Magic is brewing on the mainland and the unfortunate island is in the path of the maelstrom.

The Pirates Current has become destabilised and unpredictable, many great and terrible monsters have come ashore (and this time, not just the usual great and terrible sea monsters). The Cracked Bloodfane has started exhibiting alarming phenomena such as weeping blood and arcing red lightning.

To make matters worse The Tower of Nakh has materialised on Sartosa. All the wizards in the surrounding lands (and some from much further afield) have sensed its presence and are drawn to its power. Some have come with armies of their own; others are looking for an army to protect them whole on the island. The only problem is that the Tower of Nakh seems to be slightly detached from the material world. It has become "unstuck" by the Storm of Magic's influence on the powers within it and it occasionally "blinks" out of existence, then "blinks" back at a different location on the island. Many lesser wizards have started making a tidy profit selling predictions about where the tower will appear next!

Whenever the tower is located all the forces on the island converge on its location (the more powerful wizards often get their army to the correct location even before the tower appears; either through careful observation and measurement of Gellermetric pressure, reading the entrails of certain fish, pattern recognition torcs or any number of other occult means). Almost every time it materialises a battle must be fought between rival factions for control of the tower. It is rare that a single army will be on site when the Tower of Nakh shows up.

The Tower is always accompanied (if fact it is often preceded) by a halo of Arcane Fulcrums. Control of these Fulcrums is thought by those in the know to be the key to controlling the tower and its secrets. It has not yet been achieved but the senior prognosticators are convinced that if the web of Arcane Fulcrums can be controlled then the tower can be finally fixed in place and permanently controlled.

The time has come, once more, to muster your warbands and armies and take to the field in the hope of fortune and glory, or at very least avoiding ignoble defeat!

The Ogresuns - Weathering the Storm

Kommodore Deffgit awoke with a start from a terrible nightmare. He had dreamt of a dark future in which his beloved ship, the Ogresun, was taken over by a mutinous upstart. The cur had ruled the crew with a rod of iron, inflicted terrible punishments for the smallest of misdemeanors and neglected the ship’s paintwork shamefully.

He sat up, swung his legs out of his hammock, rubbed his one good eye and scratched his beard. He knew instinctively that something had to be done about the seditious dog. He also knew who the future mutineer would be: his name was Scurvy Mogg.

Deffgit blinked as he strolled out on deck into bright sunshine, as the Ogresun gentle rolled in the light swell of the South Tilean Sea in midsummer. He cast a cursory glance up at the sails and rigging, then around the deck. The Ogresuns were lounging around after having eaten breakfast but everything was as it should be – Dredger Zug and Barnacle Nog were excellent Mates and they knew their business when it came to the smooth running of the heavy ship.

Barnacle Nog ambled over to the Kommodore and knuckled his forehead in salute. Deffgit nodded back and Nog reported that, as expected, nothing was going on. Deffgit muttered something that Nog didn’t quite catch and wandered forward. The hands all acknowledged Deffgit as he walked past but none of them got up or even made any pretence at doing actual work, the Kommodore didn’t even notice.

He looked at a couple of knots at the prow, then pretended to examine one of the looted mortars in the forecastle the turned to Scurvy Mogg, as if he was picking a crew member at random.

“Whats y’name lad?” he asked.

“Um... They calls I Scurvy Mogg Boss, on account of my not liking lime juice in me grog.” said the decidedly shifty Mogg. Deffgit noted the shiftiness and it cemented his decision.

“What do y’suppose that is over there – that big swirly black cloud over Sartosa?” said the Kommodore, pointing towards the distant island.

“You mean the one with all the blue lightning an wot-not? I don’t rightly kn… urgh!” said Mog, but he was cut off mid sentence as Kommodore Deffgit pushed him overboard.

As the Kommodore watched the hammerhead sharks rip Scurvy Mogg to bloody shreds in the churning waters he briefly considered the unknowable repercussions that every decisions will have in the future, the interconnectedness of action and reaction. Then he thought about what to have for breakfast.

The Wrath of Forr

QUOTE ("zelophahad")
Forr Funder’amma, lord of the black orcs of Norsca, glowered at the prancing cave orc shaman, his red eyes smouldering with impatience. He hadn’t killed anything for almost a whole minute and was moments away from flattening this cretin with his massive hammer.

A great storm of magic was afoot on this island of Sartosa and Loki (who had been acting particularly strangely of late) had convinced him it would be a great place to come looking for a decent scrap. So far Forr was severely unimpressed with the fightiness of the natives: the cave orcs had just let him walk into their tribe and take over without a fight! He couldn’t make any sense of their grunting himself, but Loki said they would fight for Forr in exchange for a ‘red flower’ or something. Sounded like pansy goblin nonsense to him.

“Ug! Ugg-ug-ugg! Ugh! UGHG!” cried the shaman, gesticulating wildly and pointing his staff at the gap at the head of the pass. As he became more and more frantic and excited, wisps of green steam leaked from his nose and ears.

Forr rolled his eyes, hefted the hammer in his hand and prepared his swing… then suddenly he realised the earth was trembling beneath his feet and a shadow seemed to have passed over them. Pausing, he frowned and turned to look where the now motionless shaman was staring, eyes wide in awe and delight.

There was no longer a gap at the head of the pass.

For about the third time in his life, Forr Funder’amma smiled. Maybe these cave orcs were worthy of his sufferance after all.

The Ogresuns - Weathering the Storm

The Cold North Wind
Kommodore Deffgit and the Ogresuns meet Forr Funder’amma's lieutenant Odin, and the Black Orcs of Norsca

The pirates came ashore in the Bay of Wrecks by making Mattius Caboteur cast a Celestial Shield on the prow of the Ogresun, the scintillating blue field protected the ship from the craggy rocks and submerged eponymous wreckage that littered the cove. All the way in Caboteur constantly complained about the raging headache that sustained effort gave him, but the pirate Orcs did their best to ignore him.

As they headed inland they had to use their cutlasses to hack a path through the dense jungle undergrowth along the bank of a small river. Gigantic buzzing, biting, insects plagued them the whole morning and strange creatures could be half-seen creeping through the plants on either side.

Suddenly the air turned cold; there was a metallic clinking noise and a distinct smell of snow on the breeze. Kommodore Deffgit held up a hand as a signal to stop (a couple of Orcs at the back of the line shouted questions about why they were stopping) and told Salty Ogbad to go ahead with a small party along the river. Deffgit and the rest of the crew pushed through the trees towards the strange noise.

user posted image

Just through the trees there was a low cliff with a clearing on top. In the clearing there was a small group of heavily armoured Norscan Black Orcs in cold-weather gear. Deffgit couldn’t see what they were doing but with their furs and heavy cloaks they seemed oddly out of place in the tropical jungle.

The Ogresuns charged!

The crew of the Ogresun out-numbered them three to one but the Black Orcs formed up into a tight line at the edge of the clearing, between dense tangles of vegetation. Only five pirates could get at the Black Orcs and none of the sea-dogs seemed to be able to land a blow on them that wasn’t deflected by their substantial plate armour.

Salty Ogbad’s flanking party arrived a little too late but slammed into the side of the Norse Orcs. One of the smaller Norscans went down under a rain of cutlass slashes, punches and kicks but by then three or four of the Ogresuns had already fallen. Wyrdtoof Hogbreff, the Pirate Shaman, was knocked on the head and Kommodore Deffgit was shoved back down the cliff by the Black Orc Boss – apparently known to his warband as Odin.

The Plague Covenant - The Storming Plague
QUOTE ("Godfather Viktor")
Long gone was the time when Skabius had to serve under the over-suspicious Skrikit the Assassin.

As his Sorcerer, the Plague Priest had managed to slowly convert some of the Hold Rats to the Plague Cult and lead them in a vicious coup against Gangrenus' Plague Covenant.
Skabius' Plague Covenant, the now bloated Plague Priest reminded himself while stirring the foul content of his cauldron.

Suddenly the cauldron bubbling intensified and a violent gale blasted the Priest's dungeon door open. It was not an ordinary gale, but the Winds of Magic themselves, blowing so strong to reach deep into Vercuso sewers.

Skabius gurgled with gusto. The long awaited moment had come!

The coming Storm would have finally allowed him to brew a disease so powerful to compete with the Black Plague and the Red Pox.

He snatched a scuttling rat and flinged it into the cauldron.

It was time to take the Covenant back to the surface and collect some fresh ingredients.

The Ogresuns - Weathering the Storm

It’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good…
The Ogresuns vs The Plague Covenant in a Wyrdstone Hunt near the Bay of Wrecks

“It’s here Kommodore” said Caboteur the Warlock “I can sense the presence of several pieces of Wyrdstone in this valley.” He looked pale and tired, dark shadows ringed his eyes and he was unshaven.

user posted image

The Ogresuns had come to the brow of a hill and looked down into a jungle-covered valley. The pirates clustered under the wide leaves of a rubber plant and, even though they were already soaked to the skin, they tried to keep out of the rain as best they could. They soon fell to arguing about what sort of plant makes the best rain shelter: Some of them thought plants with a few big fat leaves would be better, while others thought that lots of small leave were more effective shelters.

Deffgit scratched his beard and adjusted his hat (but rain ran down his neck) while he observed the valley for a few minutes; it was an effort to ignore the pirates’ conversation while he tried to work out if the valley was free of any rival warbands.

Just as the Kommodore spotted the skittering forms of several Skaven rushing between the bushes, that dotted a clearing around an ancient Idol of Gork, two of the arguing pirates started fighting: Throg stuck his cutlass right through Fetch in a grisly manner.

The Skaven of The Plague Covenant rushed forward and grabbed the loot just before the pirates got to it. Several fights erupted as some of the Skaven tried to withdraw with the Wyrdstone while others ran forward to block the pirates’ way. Skabius, the bloated Skaven Plague Priest, charged into the fray with unusual aggression for his kind; with a powerful swing of his gnarled staff he smashed Fishgutz’ skull and the infamous Orc fell dead on the spot!

Caboteur cast his protective spell and moved closer to the Kommodore as he and the other officers rained crossbow bolts onto the advancing ratty horde. The Skaven who’d grabbed the Wyrdstone nearest to the pirates was hit and fell back off the rocky outcrop; a couple of others also went down beneath the pirates’ cutlasses. But for every Skaven that was killed an Orc pirate also fell, until Salty, Dredger and Deffgit all rushed into the fight; hoping t tip the balance in their favour and break through to the loot.

Deffgit’s boarding axe caught Skabius on the side of the head and sent him sprawling across the ground spewing blood and spitting teeth and Salty ran his cutlass through two ratmen in quick succession.

With their leader out of action the rest of the Skaven fled the valley – with the roaring pirates’ battlecries ringing in their ears, but the Wyrdstone shards safe in their paws.

Fetch joined the cheering crew just as the fight was over. When some of the others looked at him accusingly, in a “and where the hell were you?” kind of way, he just looked a bit sheepish, shrugged and pointed at Throg's cutlass that he was still impaled by!

The Plague Covenant - The Storming Plague

QUOTE ("Godfather Viktor")
The Plague Covenant vs The Ogresuns
Wyrdstone Hunt at the Bay of Wrecks

Just before the brake of dawn the Plague Covenant scuttled through the alleys on the outskirts of Vercuso.
When they were nearly out of town a skull brazier suddenly glowed of a ghostly green light. One of the Filthy Staves squirted the musk of fear seeing the tall, grey-haired figured covered in death symbols that was holding the brazier.
"Those grinskinned sea-scums are heading the same direction you are, Lord Skabius".
The Plague Priest ignored the falsely reverent tone of the man-thing. He knew him, Luciano Malatesta had served both Skrikit and Gangrenus.
"What d'you want, wyrd-thing?" hissed Skabius.
"I can help" and so saying Luciano stretched his hand upwards. A ghostly black replica of the Wizard's hand darted toward a seagull. As Luciano closed his fingers the bird fell at Skabius feet, well and truly dead.
"What's in for you, Malatesta?"
"I have to talk with a friend of mine who recently joined the Ogresuns" a fell grin crossed his face.
-----------------
As Malatesta had warned, the Ogresuns were descending a low hill to enter the jungle covered valley. Skabius hushed the Covenant forward, sending a Filthy Staff to grab the closest chunk of warpstone.

user posted image

While his crew was advancing, Deffgit himself braced his crossbow and with a well place shot get rid of Malatesta.
user posted image
user posted image

Ignoring the fallen warlock, Skabius directed the Covenant to another piece of warpstone, while the Filthy Staff run back to secure his early catch.
user posted image
user posted image

The infamous Fishgutz jumped forward trying to stop Poxus from running away with the Wyrdstone. A Filthy Staff, however, closed in to protect the Monk Initiate.
user posted image

Meanwhile, Deffgit and his gunline cursed loudly as they were unable to see a single Skaven through the dense foliage
user posted image

In a frothing frenzy, Skabius run for Fishgutz. Two Staves, led from the rear by Bilius, engaged the encroaching orcs led by Hogbreff. Poxus and Blisterus took position to use their slings.
user posted image
user posted image

Skabius called upon the Horned Rat and a pestilence was visited upon the orcs. Then he caved in Fishgutz skull with his gnarled staff.
user posted image

On the left flank Festerus and another Staff tried to hold their way, but the Plague Monk was quickly dispatched and the Staff downed.
user posted image
user posted image

Skabius and Bilius pushed forward, the plague liturgies of the Priest keeping the Covenant in combat in spite of mounting losses.
user posted image

Seeing the chance to turn the tide Deffgit charged Skabius and sent Hogbreff to face Bilius.
user posted image

The Commodore's axe nearly cut Skabius' arm off, actually sending the bloated skaven out. The orcish magic of Hogbreff blasted Bilius deep into the bush.
user posted image

With Poxus hit by a crossbow bolt, but holding onto the warpstone and crawling away and the other chunk safely held far from the orcs, Bilius called for a retreat.

They might have given ground to the orcs , but Skabius would be pleased that the catch was so good.

Odin's saga
QUOTE ("zelophahad")
The rocks were slippery with rain and seaweed and the five hulking figures moved slowly, their metal-encased bodies clattering as they scrambled up from the shoreline. Down in the bay a mighty longboat slowly turned towards the open sea. Suddenly the wind caught the sail which billowed out to reveal the glyph of a great horned head surrounded by an eight-pointed star.

Eventually the five figures made it to the edge of the jungle. Flies and other stinging insects pinged off their steaming armour. No one complained. Black orcs never do.

Odin turned to Olaf and Igor, his trusted lieutenants. "You know why were 'ere." His voice was deep, gruff and threateningly quiet. "Lokli sez dis island is about to 'ave a storm ov magic. An' he knowz about that kinda stuff."

"Not that he's a wizurd ov course!" piped up Ulffr - the younger black orc was keen to please and that was good, but he needed to learn his place. Odin clipped him round the ear with a clang. "Watch yer tongue lad. Yer know Forr won't 'ave no pansy wizurdz in 'is mighty army." Ulffr was about to protest he'd never said Lokki was a wizard, but realised another clip round the ear would probably mean he'd need to find a new helmet. Odin always seemed a bit touchy about that subject.

"We're 'ere becuz Lokki sez there's gonna be a storm o' magic," continued Odin, "and dat meanz there'll be sum good fighin' for uz!" His companions growled enthusiastically. "And we're off to do sum recruitin' for Forr's army. We reckon there are plenty 'ov greenskins on this island. We're going to find them and teach them about real fightin' - fightin' Norsca style. Fightin' like Khork and Tzork wantz greenskins to fight!"

With that, Odin turned and crashed into the jungle, smashing through the undergrowth with his huge axe. Olaf and Igor followed with Ulffr hot on their heels. At the back of the little group, came Noggin the Nog. His green heart was filled with vicious pride at being chosen for this expedition. Ever since Forr's Black Orcs had almost wiped out his tribe, he'd lived in awe of their fightiness and it was his deepest joy to fight alongside such vicious warriors. He'd always been one of the meanest of the Nog tribe and one day soon he'd be as 'ard as these black orcs. And then he'd be da boss. One day.

After one game (beat the Ogresuns):

Da Black Orcs ov Norsca (black orc warband)
Odin (black orc boss) - great weapon, heavy armour, shield, helmet; leader, black orc, oi behave
Olaf (black orc) - choppa, heavy armour, shield, helmet; black orc
Igor (black orc) - choppa, heavy armour, shield, helmet; black orc
Ulffr (black orc young'un) - choppa, light armour, shield, helmet; mighty blow
Noggin the Nog (young'un) - choppa, shield, helmet

Warband rating = 70 (5 members)

Odin's saga

QUOTE ("zelophahad")
Ulffr woke with a start to discover he'd be stripped of his equipment. "I've been robbed!" he yelled.

"Calm down little'un," said Igor, "it wuz da boss wot wuz robbed so he's rekrizishunned yer stuff. Yer too hurt to fight for a few days anyway so yer don't need it."

"There were a lot of those ratmen weren't there?" said Ulffr, enthusiastically bleeding on the leaf litter, "but we 'ad 'em!"

"We certainly did soldier." Technically, the ratmen had 'had' the greenskins but neither Igor nor any of the Norse orcs could bring themselves to countenance that concept. And certainly no one had any intention of suggesting such a thing to Odin.

~ ~ ~

Eventually beaten by The Plague Covenant due to sheer weight of numbers!

Odin (black orc boss) - +1WS, robbed (so requisitioned Ulffr's equipment) - axe, choppa, light armour, shield, helmet; leader, black orc, oi behave
Olaf (black orc) - +1T - axe, choppa, heavy armour, shield, helmet; black orc
Igor (black orc) - axe, choppa, heavy armour, shield, helmet; black orc, resilient
Ulffr (black orc young'un) - +2WS, deep wound (missing 1 game) - 'donated' gear to Odin! - mighty blow
Noggin the Nog (young'un) - +1Ld - axe, choppa, light armour, shield, helmet

The Plague Covenant - The Storming Plague

QUOTE ("Godfather Viktor")
The Plague Covenant vs Odin's Black Orcs
Skirmish at the bay of Wrecks

Luciano Malatesta scratched the fresh scar left by Deffgit's dart. It was unfortunate he couldn't catch Cabouter.
So, while Skabius was recovering, he took the Covenant back to the idol of Gork where they last saw the Ogresuns. But rather than the pirate orcs, they find a small party of heavily armoured northern orcs.
user posted image
user posted image

Luciano sent the ratmen forward and tried to summon his magic against the Orcs' leader.
user posted image

The Winds of Magic were suddenly drawn away from the Warlock. The Black Orcs had a Windcatcher, hiding in the bush behind them.
user posted image

The massive greenskins lined up, beating their shields with their crude choppas and challenging the skaven to come forward.
user posted image

Nearly the entire Covenant rushed forward but their weapons bunched against the orcs crude armours.
user posted image

Blisterus and a Filthy Staff stood behind luring the smaller orcs away from their comrades.
user posted image

The Filthy Staff was quickly delt with so Luciano tried his magic against the lonesome orc. But again the Windcatcher sucked all the magic power away from him.
user posted image

Blisterus failed to brake throught the orc's armour and the young orc was unable to lend a blow on the sneaky Initiate. Realising he was too far from the rest of the Covenant and not wanting to try his luck any more, Blisterus put as much distance as he could from the yelling orc.
user posted image

The combat around the idol was still going on. The skaven weapons bounching of the orcs' armours, the orcs too slow to land blows on the agile skaven.
user posted image

Suddenly things changed when an orc fell to the poison of Festerus blades and the leader to Bilius' censer fumes.
user posted image

In a final effort, the still standing orcs managed to knock down Festerus , but then realized numbers were against them and grudgingly fled.

The Ogresuns - Weathering the Storm

Hail of Doom (…well, crossbow bolts actually!)
The Ogresuns shoot up the Black Orcs of Norsca

Deep in the jungles near the Volcanic Lake the pirate Orcs pushed their way into a rocky clearing. Ominous purple-tinted thunder clouds rumbled overhead and the air had an electric charge-feel to it.

A vicious-looking mermaid turned languidly in the waters inside a huge glass tank; she watched them for a few minutes but bared her teeth at them threateningly when they approached.

“Well, that weren’t there yesterday!” said the Kommodore. “She’s a rum looking beast.”

“You’ll see a lot odder over the next few weeks sir.” said Caboteur, “It’s what we call an Arcane Fulcrum…” He started to explain where they came from and how they formed but he quickly realised that the Kommodore wasn’t really listening. A few of the Ogresuns started discussing how many mermaids they had seen and where they were most common. When they began boasting about who had seen the most it started to become a little competitive and the argument became a more heated - several loud shouting matches started. Arguments among the pirates normally turned violent pretty quickly but for once they didn’t come to blows this time.

The Larboard Watch climbed up onto a leafy rock and took out their crossbows, readying them to cover the area should any threats appear; the Starboard Watch approached the tank and started collecting several of the small chunks of Wyrdstone crystal scattered over the ground around the glass tank – wild magic was condensing into its solid form much more readily since the Storm of Magic had come to Sartosa, especially in places like graveyards, around standing stones and near Arcane Fulcrums, such as this.

Before the Starboard Watch had managed to grab more than one of the larger pieces of Wyrdstone the Larboard Watch shouted a warning: “Look out Boss! Enemy ahoy!”

The hulking forms of four Norse Black Orcs appeared out of the bushes – clearly they were intent on collecting the same Wyrdstone shards of the Ogresuns.

“Odin’s lot again! Shoot’em!” shouted Deffgit.

Odin's saga

QUOTE ("zelophahad")
Igor's helmet rattled as he shook his head to clear it. "Wot hit me?" he asked, "a spear chukka?!"

Odin was pretty sure it had actually been one of the Ogresuns' crossbow bolts, but that wasn't what great sagas were made of so he went with Igor's suggestion. "So it seems soldier," he growled, "nothing else wud've flattened one of uz black orcs wiv one shot."

Igor and the others seemed emboldened by Odin's interpretation of events. But more importantly, they'd managed to grab a large chunk of Wyrdstone crystal before the hoard of greenskin pirates could overrun them. Now it was time for Odin to replace his stolen war gear...
