Lovely savage orcs! I really like the filler, nice and characterful! Also the idea of using yellow and black warpaint is unusual and cool!

Awesome job and congrates on the painting award. I love the skin tone. What colors are you using?

Thanks! The skin is pretty simple. I start with gretchin green (the foundation color) usually done as 2 watered-down coats. Wash with Devlan mud. Highlight #1 with gretchin green, highlight #2 with gretchin green mixed 50/50 with rotting flesh. For goblins, I add a final highlight of pure rotting flesh.

QUOTE
What yellow are you using and how you manage to paint with it so nicely?

For the yellow, I start with a basecoat of Tausept Ochre, usually in 1 or 2 coats, slightly thinned. Wash with Gryphonne Sierra. Highlight with Iyaden Darksun, iyaden darksun mixed with sunburst yellow 50/50, pure sunburst yellow, and sunburst yellow mixed 50/50 with skull white.

Your army is amazing, from conversion to painting. I like all the addition of colours here and there (red, blue or yellow) it gives a striking look. My favourite of all is the wyvern, which is wonderful

Yeah I felt the army needed a centerpiece so I was deciding between Azhag and an Arachnarok. Since my army's more orc-heavy, and the azhag wyvern is such a nice model, I decided to go with him. Now its only a matter of making him work in actual games... angry.gif

Wow, that's a cool army! I love how the colour scheme is dark but the models still look really crisp and bright, how did you do it?

Wazoo

The foundation paints really help. They let you paint nice bright colors (like yellow) over a black undercoat, which was difficult before they came around. Iyaden darksun and gretchin green are especially good for this. Unfortunatey there is also alot of painstaking highlighting involved to achieve contrast. Oh, and devlan mud is also the best thing ever.

Thanks, I guess I don't have any great secrets for highlighting, besides using very fine brushes...I switched to smaller brushes with more fine points a while back, and my highlights became alot more crisp.

Thanks again guys

Great job! New to this forum and gotta say, loving what I'm seeing! Love your warboss on wyvern and I'm currently doing nearly the same thing using Azhag and the plastic warboss kid!

Sounds cool, the plastic warboss kit has alot of great conversion possibilities, be sure to post pics when you're done!

Great stuff!  Have you considered adding lots of tiny musical instruments?

- Jeff

I feel like I've seen that before somewhere..... smile.gif Wouldn't want to still your idea! Looks great by the way

For the bones, I start with a base coat of ~25% scorched brown/~75% bleached bone. Over black primer, this should be applied as two slightly watered down layers. Then wash with slightly thinned devlan mud. Highlight with bleached bone mixed with a small amount of scorched brown (maybe 90% bleached bone/10% scorched brown), and follow that with a highlight of bleached bone mixed with skull white. Add a final highlight of pure skull white.

Sure, start with a base coat of gretchin green (the foundation color). Wash it with devlan mud. Highlight with gretchin green, followed by gretchin green mixed 50/50 with rotting flesh. For goblins, I add a final highlight of pure rotting flesh.

Hope this helps.

I'm still quite new to Da-Warpath, so I haven't seen all the armies, but this is arguably the best I've seen from this forum to date.

Your Savage Orcs are win. I don't like the models, and I don't like the whole "Jungle Throw-Backs" theme GW has made for them. But you've made them look quality!

Always like seeing well painted minis, so thanks for sharing. Thanks also for your skin recipes, I'm a fan of the muted, more realistic shades you've created.

I'm hoping to get my first load of Greenies for Christmas, so will be using this as some inspiration. smile.gif

Thanks! Yeah I wasn't sure about the savage orc models at first either, but they really are great sculpts. The level of detail is incredible for plastics. Because they're mostly skin, they don't take too long to paint either, and the warpaint allows for alot of creativity.

Good luck with your horde and be sure to post some pictures!
