You can read my long winded introduction below but here's the general gist of my ramblings and their further developments: I thought it would be a good idea to run a Community Unit Project, where anyone who wants to take part can donate an Orc Boy painted/modeled up to the best of their ability to the community unit. This unit will become thing of legend and one lucky contributor will be randomly chosen to WIN THE WHOLE UNIT! The more people that take part the stronger the unit will become, please reply to this thread if you want to join in. See the full details of how to take part View the full list of those taking part Also, thanks to Goofycabal and Warboss Kurgan, we now have medals for everyone who takes part, so everyone can be a winner!
Hi everyone, I was bored at work today and had a crazy idea i thought I'd throw out there to see what people think... I thought it would be pretty cool to run a community painting/modelling project where we all work together to produce something that could be given away as a prize for a future painting/modelling competition. My first thought was that a designated boss moderator type person could buy a Giant then send one part to everyone who wants to participate they paint it up send it back then they could put it together producing a community made Giant. However, I thought this idea had a few problems; it would be hard to decide which parts of the giant model would be used, the model its self often requires quite a bit of greenstuff work across several of the parts, getting everyones parts skin colours to blend together might require a paint touchup around the joins once assembled, which might make people unhappy that their work was being altered, etc. Most of these issues are due to the nature of a single large model. I'm sure these things could be worked around but I then thought a better model candidate for a community project like this, would not be a single model but multiple models forming a big cohesive unit. With a big unit, (I was thinking Orc Boyz, or maybe Black Orcs) everyone who wanted to participate could signup and say what they'd like to paint and donate. To produce a really nice looking whole unit a few guidelines for the unit could be decided, eg. models need to be newer type models so the scale of the models is the same, and they need to have green skin and feature a common contrasting colour like red for example, (to tie the finished unit together). Also we'd all have to agree on who gets to do the command group models and any other things that needed to be decided. Once everyone knew what they were doing people could get started on their models. If the finished models were sent un-based then someone could do the bases for the whole unit as their donation to the project, to again tie all the models together. Once all painted up the models would then sent to the designated boss organiser moderator person to form them up as a unit. If we could get at least 20 models it would make a great community created unit that would make a great prize for a future competition. What do you think? Crazy, but it might work.
You could even use the new savage orc plastics. |

Certainly that idea have something interesting in it. I think that this unit could be a prize of some painting competitions campaign (so there are several competitions and winner is someone who got most points or whatever).
I would go with normal choppa and shield boyz as I guess everyone have at least one spare model like that close second would be night goblins I think |

Sounds like fun, really interesting to see the end result of that one. I agree with Brog that normal Boyz with shields probably are the best candidates as most of us will have a spare one somewhere. And they are a bit more interesting to paint than night goblins...

Good thinking. The finished unit becoming a prize for something in the future more diverse than a single painting competition might be a good idea as it would give everyone a chance of winning, maybe including other things like conversions, fluff, art, tactics, general contribution to DWP, etc. So with that in mind, thinking about what could work for a community unit project, I agree basic Orc choppa and shield boyz. They are a decent size to work on with conversions and paint job and they are quite abundant due to the weird GW box sizes. I doubt people would want to part with shiny new savages, although a unit of those would make an awesome prize, they'll probably come in sensible sized boxes as well, but parts from the kit could maybe be used to kit bash standard boyz. Night goblins on the other hand are probably more abundant than regular boyz, (due to BFSP), but as Izzy mentioned Boyz are more interesting to work with and would also make a more impressive accomplishment for the community and I'd rather try and win a cool unit of Boyz than NG's. If enough people are interested, and they also like the idea themselves then maybe the mighty moderators would give this project idea their blessing and take this on utilising their experience of running similar stuff, like the mini exchange. Maybe they're already discussing this idea in their special admin cave. This post has been edited by cb_rex on Jan 12 2011, 10:59 PM |

perhaps it should not be the price of a competition, as some people just have better chances at winning those then others. Just not everybody is equally talented.
Maybe its an idea to make the unit and simply draw a winner by means of a lottery or something. |

That's a good idea, although linking to forum activity would make sure it went to someone deserving, imagine if someone won it who joined the forum on a whim only to have later sold their army to play Dwarves, or worse still, 40k. Maybe the unit could be the prize on a lottery basis for contributing to the unit itself. That might encourage more people to donate a nicely painted up Orc, imagine if we could get 40 people taking part that would be a chance of winning a 40 strong horde of Boyz. Either way, the community unit project would actually have to become a reality before it could be given away as a prize. Who would be interested in joining in, prize or no prize? |

I'm in wherever the unit ends up. I think it would simply be cool to see everyone's varying styles and degree of painting expertise all come together.
That said... a raffle or drawing of some sort sounds like a good idea to me. |

My feelings exactly! I'd be in it because I think it's fun in the first place and would even participate if the unit was offered freely on bugmans brewery in the hope that a stunty player would join the green side |

Well perhaps this unit will be a prize itself - say you get one "chance" per boy you submit and then when the unit is finished we will do a lottery between those who contributed - this could work I think

Count me in. I should be able to scrounge up an orc boy...if not, i won't be able to i think. Well, if we do anything else than a boy i might be able to participate too.
