Hi there,

I've been planning a greenskin army for ages, and have finally gotten round to starting to paint the figures I've been collecting on and off over the years...perhaps it's a combination of the recent release of 8th Edition and the new Boar Boyz, along with the promise of a new army book in early 2011 that's finally tipped me over.

I decided to start at the top with a boar-mounted general, inspired by a conversion I saw on The Warhammer Forum some time ago:

Although I'm wondering if I need to redo him now that the new Boar Boyz are out!

To accompany him I've completed a unit of Black Orcs. I love the plastic models (they're big and characterful) but I really don't like the large helmets, so I decided to use bare Boyz heads instead - interested to know what people think:

My intention at some point is to give them shields and I'll probably using Bretonnian Men-at-Arms ones, as shown in this WIP:

They're a good size and, once again, I'm not keen on those in the Black Orc kit!

So, that's where I am! Currently working on a unit of Boyz to give me some core troops, and I'm trying to paint them quickly but well...those Black Orcs took me far longer than they should have, given the size of the unit.

As ever, comments and criticisms are welcome.

Cheers,

Yara

Welcome to Da Warpath! Your painting is very nice and clean, and the conversions are great! Myself i use a mix of heads from the Blackorc, Nob and Orc Boy sets. smile.gif

Looking forward to more.

Hi Yara,

First of all:

On behalf of myself and the rest of the Moderation Team, I would like to welcome you to Da-Warpath. You'll find a lot of helpful and friendly people, and almost any rule question you have can be probably be answered by someone here, and everyone is always happy to hear your opinion.

If you have any problems or any further questions, feel free to PM myself or one of the other Mods. We are always happy to answer any questions about the forum that you may have.

Second: I like the boar mounted character and the black orcs look good to. The men at arms shields look good on the black orcs, keep up the great work.

Cheers,
G

Hey those look great! I don't really have a preference in terms of the heads one way or another. The heads look like fine but they do look a little undersized for the bodies. Great work though!

Welcome to the forums.

Personally I prefer viewing blorcs with skin that is a bit darker. But other than that some great painting/conversion work. Look forward to the next unit.

Wonderful general and unit. However, I don't like the Boyz heads. I'd order yourself some new Boar Boyz heads from ebay (Hoards of Bits is a wonderfully pried ebay shop). I think they look much better than the completely ancient boy heads. But perhaps thats just me!

I wouldn't give the general a new boar. That boar is much more gribbly and weighty to me!

Hi,

Wowza - thank you all for the welcome to the board and the comments!

Ah, I've been rumbled wink.gif I thought it was time to bring these to a dedicated audience as I'm keen to develop this into a reasonably sized army and could use all the help (painting, tactics, army list design) that I can get!

Cheers - I was wondering how the heads would look on the larger bodies. My thinking at the moment is that they emphasise how strong and chunky the Black Orcs are, but I will have to check what they look like next to regular Orcs...it's possible that having the same heads on normal and Black Orcs will make the Black Orcs look like pinheads...I shall see what they look like!

theorox suggested using 40k Nob heads, I think, which I believe are slightly larger?

Thanks - I think those heads originally came from Hoards of Bits! I'll be getting a couple of boxes Boar Boys in the near future, so I'll have a play with putting them on some spare Black Orc bodies to se what they look like.

Have you tried matching Boar Boys heads with Black Orc bodies? My concern was that the heads look to be hollow (their tounges are on the torsos, aren't they?) so I'm not sure how well they'll go together?

Thanks - it's all down to the new Citadel washes I think. The skin was done as a Gretchin Green basecoat followed by a Thraka Green wash, with a highlight of Gretchin Green apllied back over the top to pick out the details. If it weren't for the washes I definitely wouldn't be able to get the same results!

I know what you mean about the skin-tone...it is a little more vivid than I planned, and it will be the same as the skin on all the other orcs too (as it's relatively quick to do). I think I like the contrast with the darker armour, but am wondering about knocking it back with a bit of Devlan Mud...this is something I've done on some 40k Orks before, and does give a darker tone:

user posted image

I'm going to see what these Black Orcs look like next to my regular Boys (when I get some done) and may well decide to darken their skin a bit.

Thanks again for all the comments - hopefully I'll be able to post something new after Christmas.

Cheers,

Yara

I like your black orcs, and yes I think the orc warriors heads work fine on them.

What I like the most is how your paint green skin : can you give us your recipe?

Thank you all for the replies and encouragement! I'm pressing on with the boyz, and to go with the Black Orcs I've started on some core troops. Eventually the unit will be 25, but here are the first 10:

Obviously basing is still to be completed, but that will follow when the remainder of the unit are painted.

Very pleased with these 10 as I've upped the painting speed to try to crank through the core units but I think they still sit well alongside the Black Orcs which took at least twice as long!

To keep things going I'll be cutting between the standard boyz and some more exotic units, like boar boyz and war machines. Those are still on the drawing board, however!

Cheers,

Yara
