I've just gone through the whole blog here mate and I must say absolutley tremendous paint work all the way through. You must have the patience of a saint.
It made me feel quite crappy, casting an eye on my poor efforts, perhaps its the cue to give it all up.

Outstanding all the way!

Favourite thus far is the Arachnarok, tones on that are amazing.

Hey nice update here, and cool to see more of Gorbad painted.

What's the purpose of the purple glaze on the axe? Where and how (colour, consistence) did you apply it?

Thanks for the nice comments, I'm impressed you managed to troll through every page on this blog, there's quite a few pages, and because I'm pretty slow the concentration of images per page of blog is pretty low.

You shouldn't feel crappy, if you spend plenty of time on your army it will look good, just keep going back and working on bits and improving it. It's just time and practice. My night goblin spear regiments for example started off pretty poor, and I went back and changed the colour of the shields and banners and neatened some bits up, and I plan to go back to them again and add extra highlights to the skin and robes and eventually I'll get round to painting in their eyes and then they might look quite nice. Basically just working away at the army to try and make it look better.

I'm really pleased you like the Araknarok, I don't think the pictures of it really do it justice because it's so big and was difficult to light properly. There are parts on it I'm not happy with, but overall its such a huge and cool model that I'm really pleased that I managed to finish painting it, (it only took me about a year, on and off). It's intriguing hearing what people think are my best bits are. thanks. smile.gif

@azhagmorglum - The purple glaze is made from Warlock Purple and is applied on the blade and metal parts of the axe, quite thinly. I wanted to add richness or nuance to the metal, but I added a bit too much purple so I will go back and paint a bit more silver over it. I've got a feeling Gorbad could be one of those models, (like the Araknarok) that I will be working on, on and off, over the next year. So check back in a year to see if I've finished him. biggrin.gif

Ok I'm holiday so I did troll through the lot - I was just looking for inspiration as I have bucket loads to paint but your models just demoralised me at the time. Thanks for the pick me up and encouragement. Maybe its just time I need. My arachnarock is pretty much blue and that sits well with my snow and Ice gobbos. I used the markings on the back of a normal garden orb spider to get what I wanted. However I don't have a steady hand so it seems a little lob sided. One day if I am not too ashamed I'll post it up for you to give tips (if you don't mind).

Ice goblins sound cool, you should definitely start an army blog on Da Warpath. It's a great way to motivate yourself to work on your army. My army would be half the size if I didn't have all the great people on Da Warpath to keep me going and I'll happily comment on anyone's work if they want to hear my thoughts. happy.gif

Never feel like your work is less than others! We all have to start somewhere. Some have more beginning talent than others, some of us just have to practice a bit more.I am the latter. If you are going to get anywhere in this hobby(as far as painting),my advice is grow a thick skin.Post a pic of your latest work, and ask for C&C.Also ask for tips, the community here is always helpful.Just listen to their advice and also research your arse off online. There are countless web pages, including YouTube for hands on tutorials.Don't demoralize yourself by the work of others, let it be a goal wink.gif I & everyone else here, look forward to seeing your work!

Excellent blog wub.gif , I really like your overall colour scheme; the subdued skintone works so well with the bright orange and blue. Also the tutorial on painting horns was really cool as its something I personally struggle with. As others have said Gorbad looks like he is coming along nicely, I look forward to seeing him finished biggrin.gif

I have one question though, how do you achieve that mottled effect on the boars skin (like on his hind legs/belly), Im guessing its either drybrushing or airbrushed but I cant really tell, I ask because I find doing large flat areas like that tricky as my usual basecoat, wash, highlight dosent really work when theres no edges. huh.gif

Anyway keep it up, blogs like this always inspire me to get the brushes out, so cheers for that, smile.gif

I really like painting horses and boars, going over and over with different colours trying to get a natural look. It's quite a messy process so best done before painting the rest of the detail on the model.

Unlike the new boar models Gorbads boar doesn't have much sculpted fur so I wanted to create a really fury look with stippling, (which I'd not tried before). So after base coating the boar with Charadon Granite I snipped an old GW Starter Brush down to about 3mm in length and began stippling with several colours until I was happy with the effect.

I used Codex Grey, Dheneb Stone, Graveyard Earth, Chaos Black and Skull white, not necessarily in that order. This took a long time before I was pleased with the textured effect. On the belly and snout I used some thinned Tallarn Flesh and tried to blend it into the fur, theres a bit of Warlock Purple glaze in certain places too. I also drybrushed the sculpted bits of fur and then stained them with some Gryphonne Sepia and a bit of Badab Black in the recesses.

Unfortunately I've not had time to finished the model off yet, it will probably sit at the bottom of my cabinet for at least the next 6 months before I get round to finishing him. mellow.gif

Hello again, I haven't finished Gorbad yet although I have been able to do some hobby stuff recently...

I converted/painted a Skaven Warlord, there are more pictures of him on the Garagehammer forums, I don't want to pollute my O+G blog with too many photos of a dirty rats

Back on topic, I painted a Night Goblin boss...

I managed to finish him in about 7hrs in total which is crazy fast for me, characters usually take a lot longer, (the Skaven Warlord took about 30hrs with the conversion).

Also, I thought I'd never say it, but I'm really enjoying painting freehand at the moment. The black and white checked pattern wasn't too hard once I broke it down into a series of very fine lines and I feel it really adds something to the miniature. Although I'm not sure whether I need to add a bit more to his sword or his hood or something or if I should just leave him as he is?

Other things I've started; Assembling a unit of HW+S Orc Boyz, painting a 2 hand weapon NG boss and working on the standard bearer for my Boar Boy unit.

Really striking paintjob, the orang-y red cloak is really well made and the checked pattern came out well. I'm experimenting on the freehand tecniques too smile.gif

I agree with the last couple of posts - the orange cape is amazingly well done, also cheers for the explanation of how you did the boars skin, much appreciated biggrin.gif

Thanks for the comments, I am pleased with his cloak, the main problem is you only see it when you look from behind him, so he doesn't stand out so much in a unit. I have added some white dags onto his sword to which has helped a bit.

In other news I have managed to have the motivation to work on Gorbad again, or should I say Azbad Bonecruncher. I have basically spent quite a few nights working on the freehand and now I've glued his body onto the boar. Below are some current pictures, notice the shiny epoxy around his waist, that needs painting over.

Critical feedback is most welcome, I'm trying to push everything I can do paint wise, on this model, if theres something you don't like about the model please tell me. I plan to weather and paint a chipped effect on his armour next.

It really is a great model, but if anything I think the black parts of the armour could use stronger highlights along the edges.

The boar's snout, hooves, tusks, the orc's skin, helmet, weapon, horns, the orange clothe, all are greattly painted. I guess the black armour is not finished yet, you talked about weathering or something?

The only think I don't like is the grey shirt. I don't know why, but for me grey doesn't work here with the rest of the model.
The icon on the boar's helmet is well painted but is too clean. Are you planning on chipping it a bit ? Also the fur on the orc's back could use a couple more highlights.

I'm not trying to be harsh here, your model is excellent but I'm just pointing out the things I like the less among your stunning job. I second the time you are cilling to spend to try and paint the model as best as you can. Keep it up !

I can't wait to see the finished result!
