Hey all -

I'm brand new to the forums and brand new to the Warhammer game. I used to buy and paint miniatures for fun back in 2008, got bored and stored it all away. My little brother just got in to the game and is building a High Elf army and convinced me to build my own GW army to play with him. I have tons of High Elves, Wood Elves, Empire, Greenskins, and misc minis, but I always like the Orc models - so I decided to try and put together an Orc army and see what happens. I've somewhat briefly browsed around various blogs and forums to try and understand the rules of the game, and find it all very overwhelming to grasp or even start. I don't even understand the mechanics and rules of starting an army, what I need, what I can or can't have, etc... unsure.gif

I just ordered a 7th edition (outdated) O&G Army Book (for only $1!) so I will be reading up on them once it arrives.

In the meantime, I thought it might help to list what I already have and see what I can do with those, and what more I might need to start a modest army. Here is what I currently have (and have had for years...)

1x Orc Warboss on Wyvern
1x Gorbad Ironclaw
1x Orc Shaman
1x Orc Warboss on Boar & BSB
1x Night Goblin Warboss on Giant Squiq
~10x Orc Boyz (plus some 40k orcs I can use)
1x Night Goblin Regiment
5x Goblin Wolf Riders
10x Black Orcs
5x Orc Boar Boyz
1x Orc Chariot
~12x Goblins (from Goblin Regiment)

I'm not a big fan of the goblins and would rather do an all orc army, maybe with just a couple goblins in it (was thinking the goblin wolf riders led by the goblin boss on squig), but I don't know the rules.

Any advice, tips, comments, etc. are all welcome to a totaly newbie! Thanks in advance!

Hello!!

I would heartily recommend finding the new 8th ed book form somewhere ( some places have it as a pdf*cough*) As the 7th ed book is quite different in many ways from the current one.

Gorbad does make an excellent general as he is also the BSB for the army however this can be an eggs in basket situation. Plus you then need to keep him covered in a Boar Boyz unit of at least 10 models.

goblins are great chaff and the rules for common goblin sneaky gitz are quite fun!!

Returning to Gorbad, he allows ALL units of Orcs in the army to beef up to Big 'Uns which if you are wanting an all orc army could be an option for you, you already have B.O'S but I would bulk up the unit by at least 10 more minimum.

Orc Chariots are good flank attackers, but need to be timed (if animosity doesn't bite you) with a large block unit.

All Orcs in your core selection need to be at least 20+ strong as in this edition ranks mean EVERYTHING!!

The greenskins magic has also changed spell wise and it's quite handy to have at least one lvl2 Goblin shaman in there.

wolf riders are great at re directing charges adn best of all attacking war machines/ small units of skirmishers. Never underestimate them!!

Night Goblins and forest goblins are also quite good (or at least I've found them to be)

Your general on Wyvern is going into battle handicapped by having an extremely large target shaped birthmark on him, an although it can be VERY hitty, chances are he will be a general shaped skid mark on the battlefield without some serious protection (again the O&G magic items have changed dramatically in this edition)

Hope this helps!!

Hey, hello and thanks for the reply Gruntfuttock!

I won't say I completely understand everything you mentioned in your post, as I'm still trying to wrap my head around the formation rules and unit point system, but it does give me some good pointers on what I'm still lacking. I'm also under the impression you are saying the Wyvern Boss isn't really useful or needed?

I just bought the old book mainly for a good overview of the army and for the models showcased. Also, it was $1.

Thanks again for the advice and help!

Boss's on Wyverns can be very useful but you might find in some games he will die pretty fast. You can use trolls and scenery to try to screen him from being snipped by enemy cannons and the like though.

you allready have nice starting collection, but you need to beef up the basic infantry units to 40+ for Night goblins (lots of old starter set NG for cheap on ebay) or 25+ for Orcs. Anyway your main fighting blocks need a lot of bodies as they tend to die a lot.

You allready got some great support units (the boar boyz, chariots, wolf riders), but you may want to invest in some artillery (doom divers and/or rock lobbers).

Thanks for the comments thus far!

I'm going to try and stick with an all orc army and might get the rock lobber for artillery since orcs are in command wink.gif

I will probably get another unit of orc boar boyz making 10 total and another unit of black orcs making 20 total... mostly since i really like those models!

Oh, also I didn't mention it, but I'm only trying for a small army at this time. 500-1000 points, but I still need to do some calculations on my ranks and points.
