Mean & Green, 23/11 - WIP orc hero

edit: changed the first half of the topic title from clean to mean, seeing as they're not really clean anymore no confusion I hope...

Long story short: started me a greenskin force, decided to blog progress to stay motivated. Originally I was going to go for a gritty, natural look, but while painting the first rank, I was just bummed to see all my cool poppin' highlights disappearing beneath the brown glazes, and so I decided to keep them colorful! So this is how my guys are gonna look:

sure. Undercoat with Charadon Granite (GW Foundation range), paint some lines with Khemri Brown (ditto) and finally highlight a few of the wider ones with P3 Trollblood Highlight... it's a sort of bony grey, I imagine you could get something pretty close to it if you mixed Bleached Bone and a similarly light grey. Easy as that.

Finished painting the first unit of 25 Orcs (pics are a bit washed out, shot em with my phone. sorry bout that):







Any ideas for the banner? I couldn't come up with something so I just left it blank, but if anyone has a cool idea I'm all ears.

I decided against the clean metals and dirtied it up good. I kinda like how it turned out, gives them a much more gritty feel despite the sharp, almost cartoony skin highlights. I mixed a few bitz into the unit, most notably using a Ork (not Orc) torso for the Boss, making him HUGE! Clearly he didn't get promoted based on his keen intellect

More pics after basing, and then on to something new .. haven't decided if I'm gonna do another big unit (thinking Night Gobbos) or something fun...

I know what you mean. It almost seems harder than painting the models.

Great looking unit you have there. The little extra touch on the muso was quite nice

As for the banner: do you have a theme or a name for your army yet? That might help give you a few ideas. You could always wait and leave it blank until you have a few more units done and paint their banners similar, thus tying the army together a bit more.

Regarding the banner, I considered the rock fist (seen it before and it does look good) and the classic greenskin stylized skull as well, but both just seem to be everywhere and I want my guys to stand out a bit.. I think I'll just leave it blank for now, and if I don't get any good ideas, I'll just have to wait for them to perform an in-game deed worthy of a flag! Got my ass handed to me in the 3 games I've played with my greenies so far, so it might take a while though... god damn I miss my Great Eagles!

edit: oh, and thanks for the compliment on the drummer Meyer .. I thought that was a nice addition, and I'm glad you noticed
