Hey guys, since I've returned I wanna start back up my (our...) pet project, the 8th Edition O&G Tactical Handbook which Snik had done some stuff with in my absence.
I thought we could kick back into it with a general tactical thread on O&G tactics in the Storm of Magic rule set. I've been gearing up to playing a few matches of this since I bought the rulebook recently, and I thought it'd be nice to answer a few questions and focus on a few points for those who are looking to dominate in SoM. What magic options do we have that can compete? Spell usage? How to take, guard and control magical fulcrums? What monsters, items and stuff complement our armies via scrolls of binding? Are magical pacts worth it? How to deal with other army's monsters and mischief? Type away! |

One way we can get an advantage is in the sheer number of cheap Wizards we can field! I've tried fielding a swarm of 5 Level 1 Goblin Shamans (along side Level 4 and Level 2 Orc Shamans). I kept them out of sight, right behind my Fulcrums. Whenever a Shaman leaves one of my Fulcrums (for whatever reason, whether he has moved to another Fulcrum or been taken out) one of the Goblins will move onto it to keep it mine. Dominance (holding more Fulcrums than the enemy) is the key to winning after all.

A swarm, as in a whole unit of them? Or do you just mean swarm figuratively?
![]() I haven't used the new cataclysm spells for us yet - what're they like? |

Seriously no tactics? C'mon yer gitz! ;D
One thing I've always wondered however, is why almost every White Dwarf SoM battle report with O&Gs has them take a cockatrice and chimera as their bound creatures? : / |

probably because they were the 'new' models at the time of the barteps? for our summoned monsters: arachnarok (stubborn without the gobbos ld!) wyvern w/ impact hits and killing blow!! rogue idol from monstrous arcarnun (the top level beastie!) the catacylsm spell from the big waaagh! that summons an idol of gork (or possibly mork) is very handy also nikkit, nikkit from the little waaagh! is very very sneaky!! its a very different challange to write a SoM list! will definately be keeping an eye on this thread!! |

Rogue idol? What's that from? It's not in the SoM rulebook. : /
And I thought O&Gs could take any monsters from the SoM bestiary? Not just the ones which appear in the army book? |

The Rogue Idol is from the Forge World SoM book - Monstrous Arcanum ( http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/New_Stuff/MONSTROUS_ARCANUM.html ) Any army can take any monsters using Scrolls of Binding. There are some optional rules about which armies can take which monsters in MA but I'm not keen on them as they are too limiting.
"Swarm" as in lots of Shamans. Not the unit type or a formed-up unit. |

Any army can take any monster from SoM or MA but I like to
Try and keep to monsters that OnG would take 'normally' Ie arok (which is better in SoM) and the upgrades you can buy A Wyvern for example! (wyverns should get impact hits at least imho) |

To hold Fulcrums you can either take lots of cheap Wizards or a few very strong ones. I agree fully with Kurgan on what we do best. If you play a very big game though, an Arachnarok with Spidershrine could hold a Fulcrum very well if there is one big enough. Azhag isn't half bad either as he adds another lore and is quite hard to push out of a Fulcrum.
Big expendable units can hold up a dangerous monster for a very long time. Great for protecting Fulcrums. Templates do D6 hits to a Wizard in a Fulcrum. They are bound to fail some saves. A Warboss with Other Trickster's Shard is one of the best ways to kill a Wizard in a Fulcrum. If you take a caster with your SoM points, you can unlock more big spells and increase the chance of one of your lores being in ascendancy. Always take a level 4 Orc Shaman and put him in a unit. The Fulcrum miscast table is pretty crazy so it's better to do your casting from the ground. Let cheap shamans or fighter mages (Azhag, Warboss with Wizarding Hat, caster monsters) hold your Fulcrums. This also allows you to ignore Magic Duels to some degree if you are short on Dispel Dice -- if a Shaman dies, just move another one into the Fulcrum. Calculate your opponent's SoM points in your head if possible. If you can't see them all, there's probably a big item somewhere. Find it, and Nikkit! (The Little Waaagh Equilibrium spell.) You really don't want to be surprised by a Dawnstar Sword. Sometimes an enemy Wizard will appear in your own Fulcrums by Duel, Teleport or Miscast. You can't really stop this from happening so be ready for it instead. Night Goblins with Fanatics should stay away from Fulcrums. If you keep some hitty units behind your Fulcrums you will also be able to respond by charging the offending Wizard right away. Anything on a Squig will do this rather well thanks to random movement. |

My bat rep had a cockatrice because a) the store had one painted up I could borrow,
I like the model c) it can also be seen in a few O'n'G army pictures by GW and feels orcy enough to fit right in even if it isnt the best monster to field. Tactics I have found useful: I once summoned an idol of gork and placed it right on the flank of my big un unit, Not only did it confer its benefits on to that unit but it became an obstacle that protected their flank and that was very handy as I had sent them straight up the middle with little support. In the end they chewed through a tomb kings army almost single handedly. Using a cheap boss on a wolf with that silly SoM sword an dthe item that makes the enemy in base contact re-roll successful ward saves. Send him after wizards/shamans on fulcrums and he should kill one or two of them before hes taken out. |
