Ok, in a previous edition if you gave them a shield they stopped being fast cavalry.

Ive looked in the current army book and main rulebook, and cant find anything like this. So, is it right now that we can have fast cavalry with a 4+ save?

Fast Cavalry is now an ability that is given to a unit and other abilities or stats do not take it away. So yes, they can have a 4+ save and still be fast cavalry.

I've actually been repainting mine the past week or so! I've recently started using them again and am very happy with them.
