So, with the rise of 8th, I think it is time to revisit my first, and oldest WFB army. The story of my orcs begins in 1990, when I was introduced to the hobby. Like many gamers, I play much more than I paint, and my army is a joyous mishmash of almost 20 years of playing. With the scale creep, and painting style changing over 2 decades, my army is a cacophony of models. Some are chipped, some are broken, some are missing parts, all need some love. It is time to bring some order from the chaos.

This is my army as of June 24, 2010.

2 Bolt Throwers (these are REALLY old..3rd or 4th edition)
3 Doom Divers (4th edition, just a rubber band and a winged gobbo)
1 Doom Diver (6th edition one, still in the box!)
1 Snotling pump wagon (old one) ** Done September 2, 2011**
1 Troll (BFSP version)

Total: 20 models (not including sub parts)

Grand Total: 663 Models (ish).. sheesh

So, whats the plan? The plan is to break it down into manageable chunks.
I will start with the models that are already painted
1) I will fix any chipped or damaged models
2) Give a modern wash or highlight treatment
3) Re-base the model. This last one will be the most important. It is the basing that I hope to use to update the models, and pull them together. They will still be a mishmash of styles and colors, but with a consistant basing style (something simple and repeatable) they should make the leap into a unified army. Currently, the edges are painted green, and if there is any basing done, its old school flock.

The next step?... I will cross that when I get through the "painted" models. smile.gif

Wish me luck!

So, inbetween my "honey do" lists for the weekend, and taking care of my 2 year old, I managed to get started on the project.

I felt it was important to pick something small, and easily achievable to begin with, as motivation for a daunting project is something that needs to be maintained.

I started with:

As you can see, they are painted, albeit in a style that is very cartoony, and very "red period" I wasn't about to repaint them entirely, as the color scheme works, and technically, the paint is very "clean."

A wash with Delvan Mud, and a re-highlight with Bloody Red. (Vajello Game Color) I can live with the skin tone, and everything else. The basing is fine sand with PVA to hold it down. Once that is dry, it is washed with Badab Black, and then some patchy GF9 Summer flock is added to the top, also with PVA.

The end result:

Michelangelo? No. Suitable for tabletop, and less embarassing than what I WAS fielding? You bet.

A long journey has begun with a single step. (or rather 18 steps, hehe)

You are in the same boat as me. My army is mostly 3rd/4th ed and needing a big paint-overhaul, something which I just started a few months ago. If it is any comfort your old painted figures look to be in a much better state than mine.

So anyway, good luck with the re-vamp. biggrin.gif

The red is still quite bright on those orcs but they look much much better. The boots in particular came out well (of all the bits to notice hey?) Perhaps when you have more of the amry completed they will fit in quite well. Can't wait to see that.

Nice start, they look really good now as the previous paintjob was already neat and quite good, but just lacked some depth that you brought with a couple of washes and highlights.

Also basing your mini is a nice touch that will enhance even more the good look of your (hopefully soon to be completed) army.

Keep up the good work, I'll watch this space with interest for I'm in the same boat as you (got a good bunch of O&G minis in various sate of painting/assembling/still in box)

Thanks for the comments. The fact that anyone reads it, is encoragment to keep working!

So, with the relative success of the first unit as a simple upgrade, I decided to upgrade another unit rather than start painting from scratch.

I started with 25 Orc Boyz, also from the 4th edition set like the bowmen above:

A Delvan mud wash, re-highlight the clothes, base, and ended with:
user posted image

I realize now, that I should have paid more attention to ranking up better for the second picture. With the command standing funny, they look wierd to me, but I was in a hurry to snap the pic. I SHOULD do a banner for them, but it can wait.

Next up, I am going to try to actually paint some miniatures from scratch instead of upgrading. I chose the spear goblins from the BFSP set. It is boxed as 2 units of 20. I am probably going to want to run them as a big block of 40 or more. I will use the extra command as filler, until I get a box of the new goblins to make up the rest. This is assuming that painting 40 ish of the buggers doesn't kill me. The models had a TON of flash on them, and I spent easily an hour and a half cleaning mouldlines off them. They are primered now, and then a thin basecoat of black to get all the spots the primer missed, and I should be able to get started on them in the next day or two.

funny, we use the same simple technique but it really works fishman.gif

I actually kinda like the old O&G models better that the new ones, except for those unipose plastic ones. But they remind of a quite nostalgic time, so i think i'll enjoy following this army blog (secretly hoping you will introduce further old goodies wink.gif)

keep up the good work!
