Hey all...

Still tweaking my list at home atm... and it suddenly hit me... for the price of the six River Trolls I was intending to include in my 2500 point list, I could instead have a Doom Diver, a Rock Lobber, and a souped up Pump Wagon or Wolf Chariot.

My list already includes a Giant, an Arachnorok Spider, and a horde of 40 Black Orcs. Do you think I should stick with the River Trolls as my 4th scary "hammer" unit or take the war machines instead?

Thanks! biggrin.gif

Personally, I like stone trolls included with a diver or two. With that many points, you should be able to. If not, the stone thrower is still a good option and I believe is a Special (no book in front of me).

The -1 WS is good, but almost always all that will do is make them hit on 4s and not 3s. Yes good, but I'd rather take the extra 4 hits, ultimately being 1-2 wounds, then have a 5+ 4+ stone skin/regen roll. Same point cost as River, but more opportunities to avoid damage. Might just be me but makes more sense.

Also, With that many points, it wouldn't hurt to have 2 doom divers. almost guaranteed 2d6 dmg hits, half the time on two units. Alternatively, the trolls are good because they are dangerous and will be targets so you can move in you NGs or whatever else. Also, consider a Squig herd. awesome cheap little bastards.

I appreciate the advise but that wasn't my question. Maybe I wan't clear.

Basically what I'm asking is if you had to choose between six River Trolls or several war machines in a list that already has 3 hammer units (Giant, Arak, 40 Blorcs) what would you choose?

Although I could maybe see the possibility of cutting the River Troll unit down a bit to make room for one or two Divers. biggrin.gif

i'd go war machines, unless your core allotment was something strange like 50 spider riders, but if you have one or two footslogging anvils, go war machines.

I will join the chorus - go for War Machines.

Though I love Trolls, I still find that versatility is importent for us green folks, and going for so many hammers will reduce your versatility.

Some anvils, War Machines, your above mentioned hammers and some War Machine hunters and redirectors, and you have yourself a versatile army.

Now go beat the cr*p out of whomever gets in your way.

Do you really manage to squeze all that into the 625 rare allowance?

Using bork bork's excellent point about rare allowance as a guide, I'd drop the giant for normal trolls and use the spare points on your warmachines.

Ah but my Spider serves as a mount for my Goblin Great Shaman so the Spider's point cost come from my Lords allowance not my Rares wink.gif

So really, the only thing taking up Rare points atm is the Giant, which is why I had so many points available for 6 River Trolls.

As for the questions from the rest of you regarding my anvils, I also have a unit of 60 Night Goblins and a unit of 30 Orc Boys with shields so they should have do well enough in protecting the "artillery battery."

Hmm... I just realized for the price of a tooled out Pump Wagon I could have 2 Spear Chukkas.

Now I'm thinking Doom Diver, Lobba, and 2 Spear Chukkas to give my list some serious ranged threat wink.gif

i say compromise. bring 1 or 2 river troll chariots and some machinery. These things can be super affective and for a small frontage. I would say at least 1 machine though either a lobba or diver depending on youem, but the meta. Realize that the debate is for units/machines that each serve a completely different battlefield role. Find what the rest of your army lacks and pick the tools for that job. Though if its high arm sv your worried about both the trolls and a diver can handle em but a diver does it better.

Forgive my unclear answer.

I would suggest the warmachines. You are going to need to hunt down some of the enemy machines and monsters with those things. Additionally, paired with fanatics, you will disintegrate some of those bulky units.

I'd lean towards River Trolls. -1 to Hit is nice. 4+ Regenration save is even better.
