Hello all,

My name is Johan and i'm a 22 year old psychology student in the Netherlands. For quite some time now i've been passively lurking around these forums both out of curiosity and to look for inspiration, and now the time has come for me to get more active here, and introduce myself and my work in this blog. Now I know this may not be the best thing to say when trying to make an impression, but if I know myself just the slightest bit, I can pretty much guarantee that this will be a slow, slow, slow-paced army blog! As I said, thats knowing myself, but 'luck' has it that at my local Games Workshop a blood in the badlands campaign started not so long ago, and I decided to participate in it. I mean, how hard can it be to stomp out a night goblin army in a few weeks right ^^?

That was about 2 months ago, now the most of the army is assembled, and it is time to get to painting...

Looking around on the forums i've seen a lot of different night goblin themed army's come across, i've seen green ones, light green ones, dark green ones, slightly different than aforementioned green ones, blue ones, and even some red ones (not entirely sure if i saw those on these forums to be honest ^^), but surprisingly I haven't seen anyone (maybe I didn't look well enough) who took the one sentence out of the most recent O&G army book and decided to base his entire army around that one sentence, and so, i bring you my personal version of the Frost Goblin!

Now I decided to miss the part that frost goblins live in Naggaroth (because why would they bother coming from Naggaroth to the badlands for a campaign right?) and decided that my frost goblins would come from the northernmost part of the old world, somewhere far above Kislev, but also far away out of sight from chaos tribes. So.. they come from one of these mountains up there smile.gif

Before I finally go and show you some of my work, I have to note that I currently don't have access to a decent camera, and I tried my best at giving it a shot with my phone. I figured it would be worth it, because you'd have an idea, and I also figured starting this blog will keep me motivated in finishing the entire army smile.gif

So, to start off, one of my general's in the campaign: yet-to-be-named-great shaman with the Skull Wand of Kaloth:

Ok, some more lore: I am a big fan of Night Goblins and many of their units, but I also like them because it give's me an opportunity to paint in a lot of different and bright colors, and, because it give's me the opportunity to paint in extreme highlighting, because the model's are - in my opinion - comically enough to pull it off.

Now, my army is led by the shaman you've now seen, and he's the biggest shroom maniac ever to have ruled in the northern region's, and therefor the entire hold is based around farming and crossbreeding all type's of highly addictive mushrooms, which results into some very unnatural looking things... such as these squigs:

and the last for today: a picture of the command group for my first block of night goblins:

One last thing and I'll stop rambling:). I figure not everyone will be a great fan of the extreme highlighting and comic like paint style, but keep in mind that it is chosen on purpose, and when handing out C&C, please refrain from those points, and stick to the execution of it please ^^

More and better pictures soon!

Wow, those are some VERY impressive night gobs!

The mix n' match colors on all of the cloth really work to create a great sense of randomness, and it is all painted very well. I cannot wait to see a whole unit of NGs painted up in this scheme! Only thing I would say is that your command group's skin looks a little flat. Did you do less steps on them, or is it just that the newer models have less places for shadows? Because I love your skin on the shaman and the herder, but the normal gobs look a little lifeless.

And as for the squigs, I love love love the zebra squig, and I like the colors on the other one, but I don't really like the legs being a different color, at least not so cleanly. I imagine a very poison dart frog type feel to these, where there is at least a little speckling between the two colors.

Lookin' great overall, and welcome to da forum!

You've done it all wrong, Oreon! You're supposed to start out real bad and progress into slightly less real bad. You see? Progression! Like I do it.

Just kidding. tongue.gif

That shaman is awesome. And the banner is just incredible! I look forward to see more of your work.

You study psychology, in the Netherlands? Of course you're all about 'shrooms! wink.gif

Welcome to Da Warpath, Oreon. The stuff looks great so far, the gemstone is stunning. The zebrasquig is flippin' awesome, and those nightgobbos are looking really good as well. Love the skintone. biggrin.gif

Theo! "Living in the Netherlands" does not equal "Doing more drugs than Charlie Sheen".

I mean, look at me, I've bneen off the stuff for years now. And the flashbacks aren't even .....AARRRAAGGAAHHHHAAAGGGHHHHH!!!!!!

@Oreon:

Nice painting there. I like the clothes and banners and such.
But as pointed out before, some part you seem to have skipped a few steps.

Notably: The banner pole, The skin and a few other tidbits.
I'd really give these at least a wash to tie in the colors.
(or is this just camera quality at work?)

Also, is your shaman scared? Because the snow on his base looks a bit yellow.

But obviously I've been a bit picky because the overall quality is amazing. The points above are just minor points. The paintjob is lovely.

Hi all,

Thanks for the awesome replies you all! Reading your comments makes me think I will be able to paint even faster now that I have a place to show it off wink.gif

I went over and added another wash over the goblin's today, and am almost finished with 17 more that would put it up to a 20 (my aim is to get 40 by the end of this week).. speed-painting.. sad.gif

And as you all noted, i think the shaman took up more time to paint than over half of my night gobbo regiment, resulting in my normal night goblins getting maybe 2-3 layers where the shaman got a gazillion wink.gif

Some side notes, the snow on the shaman's base is totally white, i double checked it since you scared me tongue.gif so its only the lighting!

As for some other things aside, I've had quite a busy day, but I plan to post pictures of some more night goblins (again, hopefully the first 20), to give you all an idea of what my first block will look like!

For any suggestions on characters you are welcome to pitch in idea's as well! Since I don't have a BSB yet, i figured I'd maybe sculpt a tentacle arm, to represent the nature of where my gobbo's come from, what do you think?

And lastly for now: I have a game for my campaign next thursday, where i'll be playing against Ogres. Since I've only played one game with my gobbo's so far (which ended in a draw against a WoC army, and made me real happy tbh tongue.gif), I'd love some advice on how to tackle them as well if you have any smile.gif

Stay tuned for more pictures are coming in tomorrow!

Oreon

Edit: Didn't figure the link between psychology - the netherlands and shroomz yet, but made me wonder if I should go out and shop, perhaps that would create some genius evil NG idea's ohmy.gif!

Curse you Oreon. I am doing something kind of similar, just I am doing normal goblins. Mine are from a nearly always snow covered valley in the same kind of area of the old world as you discribed. I have yet to start painting but plan to soon. Perhaps your night gobbos are the "Frostcap Night Goblins" from said valley????

Any way, not that I am going to go into the same detail as you, but what colors did you use to make the "cold goblin" effect???

Hey all, I'm back with a new update on the army!

@ Da Little Waagh: I assume you are talking about the skin tone? For heroes it is as follows: Dheneb stone -> Devlan mud wash - - - (Wash again if it isn't applied deep enough) - - > Kommando Khaki -> 50/50 Kommando Khaki/Dheneb stone --> Dheneb stone --> 50/50 Dheneb stone/Skull white --> 25-75 dheneb stone/skull white final highlights (only applied at certain spots, depending on if the area allows such a final highlight).

For gobbo's: Dheneb stone -> devlan mud

i used the first one for the shaman and the squig herder (was still testing), I assume thats some of you noticed a difference there, because the gobbo's only received the 'gobbo' treatment smile.gif

Anyways, here are 2 (again poorly phone-taken pics) of my first 20 gobbo's:

C&C is always welcome, as are ideas!

Projects to be shown soon: A second shaman (lvl 2 game wise), and a BSB.

As for a big boss project i think i'll be making a 'clown/jester-like' big boss.. but thats for much later smile.gif!
