Can I place the template to start over my enemies unit and then nominate the direction and roll for distance thus ensuring further that the unit I'm placing the template over is getting hit ( not that it wouldn't if I started an inch away but just saying for argument's sake)?

The template starts moving from where the wizard is. That is you place the template in base contact with the wizard, then nominate a direction then roll distance.

If the enemy is so close that the template starts over them while it is in base contact with the caster, you can start it over them.

Ok thank you. I must have missed where it says the template starts in base contact with the Shaman.

I must have missed it as well as all it says in the O&G book is - "once the template is placed..." ... so checking the WRB : page 38 on magical vortexes "... which is placed in base contact with the caster and with its centre within the caster's arc..."

Goes to show how many times I've been diddled with that one. I've had an opponent with a level 4 Goblin Shaman hiding across the otherside of the board wrecking havoc with that when I played a VC army against him. He would just place it to the side of my hordes and would just roll 4D6 and completely eradicate my zombies then my ghouls the my grave guard and then my unit of skellies. I feel cheated!!

So beware people... a lesson learned, and that one is that I should be paying attention.

i have a further question:
can i place the template on a unit that is in close combat with my shaman's unit?
must i declare some sort of other target for it to be legal? by, aiming the template on a unit that is behind the engaged enemy for example.

in other terms: must the curse of da bad moon have a target other than the unit engaged in close combat?

There is no restirictions on the vortex not starting in combat. Magical vortexes state that it does not have a target.
