Edit: All right everyone. This started out as an self-inspirational blog for myself, but it's soon become apparent that there are a number of you who want to get into shape too - and you'd like to share your experience with us all. So sign up below, and join in! The more fit we all get, the more likely we are to be able to take on all the other Warhammer players and win!

Okay, one of the things I've been neglecting for far too long has been my physical well being. Well, maybe not quite so drastic sounding - I've been working a fairly physical and energy draining job for the last year and a half, so I've managed to lose a little bit of the old pot belly (two belt notches in fact).

BUT, that does not equate to being fit.

So, from Monday of this week, I've been getting back into the gym. And by gym, I mean my dad's gym gear. See, he's a long time body-builder/weight-trainer, and has his own equipment. And knows exactly what to do with it all. With 50-60 years experience with it (I can never remember which), I'm pretty sure I can trust him...

Now, I *used* to train on and off under his tutelage many years ago, but have fallen out of the habit. So badly, that since starting up again this Monday, I've found I can only lift a fraction of the weight I used to be able to do! I knew I was out of shape, but I hadn't realised it was quite so bad...

As a result of this, I'm pretty much having to start from scratch again (starting out with 10-15kg weights and only do a small number of repetitions).

So, why the blog? Well, mostly 'cause I want to keep track of my progress, and because I reckon if I actually have this posted up somewhere, I'll be more likely to want to keep up with the training.

At this stage, I've got nothing really much to report, progress wise, (largely because I've only had 3 separate sessions already) but I think I should get some measurements taken soon, so I can have a record here to compare later on. Not sure about getting any pics to accompany this, though...

Time to get back into shape. WAAAAGH! yarr.gif

You aint the only one, but I've managed to loose almost 1 stone in around 5-6 weeks at the gym. And yes this did include the christmas dinner with all the trimmings etc.

Nice idea Goofs! Hope you don't mind if I join in on this thread too!

I'm fairly active (as most of you know - I'm a Taekwon-Do black belt and instructor) but I'm still a bit overweight. I have lost a stone and a half in the last year, just through reducing portion sizes when I cook but I intend to loose another stone this year. Let's see how we do eh?

I'm currently 11st 13lbs (167lbs, 75.7kg). Cheese.gif
I'm 5'9" (175cm)

Weight lifting is great for your general wellbeing, but it is not going to do much for your waist.

Kurgan's idea is the best really, eat less. Especially eat less carbs. Never drink anything sweetened.

The best exercise for weight loss is anything endurance based. I recommend running as you can do it almost anywhere but swimming, cycling and cross-country skiing are all great.

Keep a diary of your training. I know three good online communities for this purpose in Swedish so I would assume there are plenty in English. It really helps to keep track of your progress and some statistics is always fun.

Exercise is vital for me as I work sitting down all day, which is really not a good idea but I can't do much about that. Since I don't have as much time as I'd like (work, kids, house, hobbies, etc.) running is the most efficient as I don't have to go anywhere, I just get out of the house and run for as long as I have time for. In 2011 I ran 2114.6 km.

Already had a chat with Goofs a few days ago, will also be joining in on this biggrin.gif

Sofar, health is ok (from being absolutely abysmal to new considerably smaller body) but that's slowed to a crawl this year. So hopefully this will help speed my weight loss & fitness back up smile.gif

Either way, good luck baldy!

Borzag

EDIT: one of the things that's really helped me is leg & core exercises (admittedly the core is more for my back than my weight, but hey). Basically, building up leg muscles so that when I go running, walking etc I'm burning more calories. It's helped a fair bit. Plus your dad will know the importance of an even physique instead of just big arms, big shoulders and puny stick figure legs smile.gif

Looks like there's a fair bit of exercise going on everywhere then biggrin.gif

@Snikpik: That's pretty impressive!

@Kera: Yoga could certainly help out - but having a VERY tight budget, not something I can afford - hence why I'm using equipment that is free for me to use happy.gif

@Kurgan: More than happy for anyone who wants to take part to do so smile.gif

@Anton: Well, it's not just weightlifting alone - my dad's a fully trained bodybuilder, so it's an all-round training regimen biggrin.gif

@Borzag: You've done a great job so far with your own exercise/diet etc!

@All: Considering that my main work involves 3 solid hours of physical labour every weeknight, I'm getting some manner of endurance work right there. That's how I've already lost two belt notches in the past year and a half happy.gif

Weight-wise, I'm roughly 65kgs, so I'm not really looking to 'lose' any weight - but that doesn't mean I don't need to lose the pot belly and put on some overall muscle mass. I'll get some measurements taken this weekend.

Looking forward to seeing how everyone else does in their training and/or dieting too - so keep your own updates coming too!

@ Kera. I used to do yoga classes for about 4 years. It really is good for you. And yes its about 90% female, but of course I was only there for exercise. wink.gif The other good thing is once you learn it you can do bits at home, I am quite slack at doing this but just 10 minutes per day can make a difference.

I'll probably start training in the new year, too. Well, hopefully at least. I have a classmate who goes to the gym and he's pretty dam buff, I can maybe go with him. smile.gif

I don't need to loose weight, I need to gain weight. I'm really skinny! About 47-48 kilos and over 180cm...the BMI just doesn't look very good for a 16-year old guy, even a slim one. tongue.gif

One thing to keep in mind about the BMI, Theo, is that it's a little off whack. My dad, for example, is classed as almost 'obese' by BMI standards. That is, he's 5'7" and 187 pounds. But that's like 90% muscle mass and 10% body fat we're talking...

Anyways, one of my 'weight loss fallacies' pet peeves aside, today's been a mostly arms and back workout for me. Learnt a new trick that makes the muscles think they're being smart too. Do a bunch of a reps on a weight you're comfortable with (like 15-20 reps). Then, bump it up a bit (5-10kgs for eg). Do like 3 or 4 of this weight which feels like too much. THEN add another 5kgs and do 3 reps of this weight.

Take the 5kgs off again, and all of a sudden you can do 10 or so reps of the other 'too heavy' weight biggrin.gif Silly muscles think they're getting an easy ride happy.gif

Anyways, lesson #2 from today: Doing training focusing on arms and shoulders = good idea.
Hanging out an entire washing machine of laundry immediately after said training = bad idea.

I'll be getting some measurements taken this week to keep track of to...

Here is an other one who needs to loose weight/gets in better shape.

Since i have quit (field) hockey i turned into a kilo magnet, but with everything new i try old hockey injuries (back, knee, ankle, hamstring) play up almost instantly (that is what made me quit hockey in the first place).

Work isn't helping either. Fieldwork usually makes me lose a kilo, but it also cranks up you appetite....which makes sure that that lost kilo comes back 4 times once you are back in the office.

Alright guys and gals, who would be interested in turning this into a proper 'all inclusive' group-run exercise blog?

Raise your hand below, and we'll take a look at kicking this off right for everyone involved!

I'll be up fpr that.

Incidently when concerning the BMI ratio Goofy is right when it comes to some people. I'm a nurse and we dont often refer to the BMI these days, at least not in my area of work. However for under weight people in can be a very useful indicator that they need to put more on. Over weight, it gets a little more tricky as it doesnt take in to considration, as Goofy says, muscle that weighs more than fat.
