Title: Project: Common Trolls

Shadowlord - July 21, 2012 06:07 PM (GMT)
Hello again!

While I did intend to build more Wolf Riders, now that I finished painting my Watchtower unit of 20 Arrer Boyz, I suddenly got the urge to create my nine strong unit of Common Trolls. Over the coming two or three weeks I will maintain a mini-blog or whatever it can be called, where I post pictures of this unit in various stages.

Ever since I saw Slugdrool (the troll from the Skull Pass box), I have always wanted to have a unit with these bad boys. I know a lot of people think they look too much like LotR trolls but I loved Mark of Chaos the game, especially the Orc expansion, and thus Slugdrool and his two metal buddies were some of the first models I got for my restarted O&G army.

Yeah I think they are that cool. :)

First off, these trolls have limited poses, and three versions of the Common Trolls is not much to work with. So with two sore thumbs, at least one new blade, and lots of pinning I have finally been able to create some unique poses for the nine trolls I have converted. I intend to add extra trophies in the form of heads, skulls, and purses, add greenstuff to the gaps and holes, as well as create scars and teeth on some of the trolls, and do some kick arse bases.

FIRST ROW:

The left has had repositioned arms, his bone replaced with a wooden/stone club, and had the old Giant scenery Empire soldier added (soon turned into pulp...). The middle one has repositioned feet making it look like he is running and has a spike on his shoulder pad added. The right is the gular Slugdrool troll with a plastic Giant Empire dude running (soon crushed and eaten...).

SECOND ROW:

The left has his arms repositioned and his two handed sledgehammer replaced with a morning star and a wheel as shield, not to mention the skull on a spike on his shoulder pad. The middle is Slugdrool with two ogre hands (I removed the little finger to make the hand look like a troll's) with two weapons that comes with the command sprue and the Thundertusk box. The right has his right hand repositioned with an added spear.

THIRD ROW:

The left has had his arms repositioned and his two handed meat sledge replaced with a 'uge club and a rusty old axe. The middle has gotten the same treatment but kept his big hammer in a diffent stand. The right has had his bone replaced with the same rusty old axe.

Hope you like!

Will add green stuff and cool bases in the coming days.  B)

Easily some of the best conversions of those awesome models :D

rat of vengence - July 23, 2012 09:55 PM (GMT)
Great work mate, I noticed the tongue you added there. They all come out quite individual. I did similar, but you have put more work into it. Excellent stuff!

Thanks fellow Warbosses! :D

I started painting one of the trolls to see how I want them to end up - not a bad start methinks but there is tons more to do to make the colors melt together.

Finished one test troll, and while I did a lot of stuff in between, I think I can manage to do a couple of these per evening.

Exactly. They're stunning!

And... may I ask for your skin recipe? My common trolls are already red, but I could borrow your scheme for the stone trolls ^^

Skarsnik, the lord - July 26, 2012 10:09 PM (GMT)
Lovely Troll conversions and awesome painting. Very good job! :D

- Cheers, Skarsnik.

Shadowlord - July 26, 2012 11:03 PM (GMT)
Thanks folks! B)

Skin recipe is simple as with all my painting I prefer few colors, washes, and water to make it blend naturally. With these trolls I was aiming to make them look different from the stone trolls but yet be stoney in appereance. Granite was what I ended up with and I painted them as follows:

Black primer - drybrush heavily with skavenlight dinge - wash heavily with agrax earthshade - highlight/wetblend with skavenblight dinge - thinly highlight/wetblend with stormvermin fur. That is how you get the granite look. The light face and belly is even simpler - drybrush with really dry steel legion drab in the face and normally on the body - drybrush with really dry rakarth flesh on the face and normally on the body - wetblend/highlight where the transition between colors are not smooth enough with rakarth flesh.

Granite and mud melt exellently together.

Three more done by friday evening so stay tuned! :D

Edit: spelling

Second row completed, but the light on the pics is a tad bit too bright (looks too white and some of the blood is just black).

Won't be able to work on these until monday at the earliest but I expect the unit to be done tuesday evening. :D

Then I will probably finish my first two wolf rider units.

So do I, and I don't even know him. Damn guy.

That's the coolest common troll unit I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of cool trolls on here. The conversions are just right, not over the top but very nicely executed. The painting is superb, the highlights and blends just make me jealous...

The bases are amazing too! :)

Fantastic trolls. I really like them :)

Noisy Assassin - July 30, 2012 04:02 PM (GMT)
Wow, definitely looking awesome. Conversions and painting are great!

Any chance you could list out the recipie for painting the chunk of dwarf statue that the BfSP troll is holding?

Shadowlord - July 30, 2012 04:34 PM (GMT)
Contrary to what I wrote in my earlier post, I will finish the last three trolls today. :D

Recipe for chunk of dwarf metal piece (should be stone but metal pops better) is as follows:

Warplock Bronze base washed with Nuln Oil

Drybrushed with Brass Scorpion then with a thin drybrush of Sycorax Bronze

Washed with a mix of Sotek Green, Biel-Tan Green, and some water (sucked up all the excess)

Ta-da!

Shadowlord - July 30, 2012 11:02 PM (GMT)
Done and done!

Not too happy with the photo but they are of the same quality as the rest and now one of my favorite units I have ever painted. Will be a treat to field when I get my first 3K painted. Next up after I have painted more orcs and other units, will be three Giants: Little Gork, Little Mork, and "Da uva one!". :D
