Title: Da Frostbite Tribe
Description: Ice/Snow themed Waaaagh

apex - July 21, 2012 05:11 PM (GMT)
Hi all,

You are prob all sick of hearing this but I am new to the site so go easy on me.

I first got into warhammer about 15 years ago when my dad bought me the old warhammer starter box containing high elves and orcs n gobbos! As most people tend to do I grew out of it as secondary school progressed and I discovered sport, girls and went onto uni. Well now I am 27 and that is all over I have been drawn back to the amazing world of warhammer gaming.

So I am planning on starting an orc and goblin army and thought starting a thread like this would give me the motivation and drive to follow through to completion.

Firstly I would like to say that I am not that concerned about playing or winning too much with this army and doing it more for aesthetic and fun reasons. So with that in mind I just want cool looking unusual units.
I am by no means a great painter and very new to all this so any comments or constructive criticism would be appreciated!

So I have come up with a theme that I am going to pursue.

Dis is da frostbite tribe dat lives in the shadow of thunder mountain near mt squighorn! It always snows and very chilly so going to paint them in an ice/snow theme. I have also come up with cold/ice themed character names in consideration too but will post them when I buy/paint the models. I want a horde of night goblins as the centre with lots of mobile units like wolf riders and squig hoppers and big ass spiders and giants! Oh and da frostbite tribe don't like stinky orcs so just goblin tribe for now. Maybe orcs later if da goblins keep getting bashed! ;)

I currently only have 20 night goblins and a goblin shaman which I am in the middle of painting to try out my theme.
I will post a sneak preview pic tomorrow as not at home right now. (i know most people only come on here for the pics!)

Heh - your story is almost identical to mine, except I've got about 4yrs on ya age wise, but we both had that starter set and both just picked this up again.

Don't worry, we're a friendly lot here. And we hardly ever bite
(Except for Theo! Watch out for Theo!!!!)

Also the army theme sounds like you've put some effort into it. that should make it all the more fun to put together.

And you don't have to be a perfect painter to turn up with decent models.
With the washes you can add dept to your models pretty quickly these days.

Thanks for the comments guys, as promised here are my first few attempts on some Night Goblins and a Goblin Shaman to try and get the ice/snow theme sorted.
Let me know what you think.

Thanks for the comments, just an update on the rest of the unit of night goblins. I did originally plan on just painting them as they come in the box but had a brain wave that may work.

To make the command and characters stand out I have used slate chips on the base which I have washed dark blue, both to raise the figures up a bit to be more visible and also to make them look like they are stood on shards of ice.

So I thought that it may be cool to replace the default moon shields with shards of ice.
It gets so cold up near Thunder Mountain that the gobbos like to chip off large blocks of ice to carry into battle. As tough as a shield but also mutli-purpose such as a nice refreshing lick if they get thirsty and also if they stand on them a quick escape down the mountain side if they encounter any big Orc fellas looking to loot them!

So with that in mind here are the slightly converted models with ice shields. Will paint them up asap. Oh and ignore the nooby mould lines as they will be removed going forward! :P

New to all this conversion stuff so hope it works and I haven't just ruined my models! :vomit:

Paiant Slapah - July 24, 2012 04:15 AM (GMT)
Really nice ice/snow work. Great conversion idea for the shields. Looking forward to updates.

amplebob - July 24, 2012 11:46 AM (GMT)
Those goblins look great, like they're in a full on blizzard.
An army like this would be brilliant. Looking forward to seeing this develop.

That Shaman makes me feel cold.

Drut - July 31, 2012 01:29 PM (GMT)
Are you going to add some yetis? or the abominable snowman?

Love the theme and your painting/modeling style, as with a lot of these army blogs I end up thinking of a load of ideas and getting a bit over excited so give me a shout if you want to hear any of them? (2 of them are up there ^)

I too have just got back to warhammer after an 8 year hiatus

keep up the good work, really promising!!

They look cold :P
I just say. Keep up the awsome work

apex - July 31, 2012 03:50 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the comments guys. I will post some more pics tomoz as nearly finished the first rank of 10 for this night goblin horde. Just waiting for 2 night goblin bosses to be delivered. And any ideas would be greatly received so keep them coming.

Was defo thinking of adding some cold looking creatures. The ogre thundertusk might make a good addition as a woolly mammoth with a shed load of goblins clung to his back!

Drut ideas please! :)

My fanatics will be swinging huge blocks of ice instead of metal balls which hopefully will work well.

apex - August 1, 2012 06:38 AM (GMT)
As promised here are a few more pics. Bring on the Blizzard! Still got the 2nd rank to do which I will try to do asap but pretty busy at the moment.

Also sorry about the pics above but didn't realise removing them from imageshack would remove them from here too. And i have deleted them now so can't get them back. :cheese:

You could make a fanatic thats stuck in a huge snowball with just his arms and legs sticking out, as if hes been pushed down a hill and gathered loads of snow?

dragonslayer45 - August 2, 2012 08:52 PM (GMT)
That is a really cool theme! I really like it : )

Warboss Gorbolg - August 2, 2012 09:00 PM (GMT)
Keep it up! This army will look great, especially if you build an appropriate gaming table to fit the theme.

apex - August 12, 2012 09:36 AM (GMT)
Not done much work on things as been waiting for 2 night goblin bosses to arrive as there was a delay with the delivery. But I have them now and added them to GIANT ice bases to make them stand out even more from the unit of Night Goblins so time to get some paint on them. Sorry for the delay.

I did paint an orc warboss whilst I was waiting which is below but wasn't planning on including orc's for now but just wanted to try out my theme on one....

I must admit I have been dreadful at working on these but a little update on my snow theme. I have pretty much finished both of my night goblin bosses and also went to town on the snow theme. It just didn't feel cold enough for my liking so let me know what you think. I destroyed my banner trying to be clever so will need to redo that.

Very cool and with a great theme, very well executed. I must say that the new gobbo shamen really looks good with that base and colouring!

I'll post another close up of the shaman for you as cant see him that clearly in those pics. I have also just purchased some savage orc boar riders but going to convert them to riding the fenrisian wolves from 40k space wolves. So watch this space. Going to be lots of snow and possible slippy ice the wolves are struggling to stay up on

apex - November 24, 2012 02:56 PM (GMT)
Right I have put together my Savage Orc Wolf Riders so let me know what you think. Next step is to greenstuff the join marks before base coating.

I also like the idea that the Orcs of this clan used to ride boars until the Giant wolves came on the scene and they have since discarded the boars for a fiercer mount. Hence, I have converted the banner to include a boar head and also one of the riders is holding a boars head in his left hand to show the enemy how savage they are! These two features will come accompanied by lots of gore dribbling down said banner/arm. Yummy. Let's just hope the wolves don't turn on their riders......

Once these are painted up I am going to make a savage orc big boss from the top half of the "new" savage orc boss with great weapon but riding a space marine thunderwolf or a direwolf from another site I have seen so the wolf is slightly larger

BrokeToof da Scrapa - November 24, 2012 04:10 PM (GMT)
I love the wolf idea. But didnt you have to green stuff some robotic parts on the wolfs? I could have swore that some of them have robo legs.

apex - November 24, 2012 05:13 PM (GMT)
1 of the thunderwolves from the 3 has a bionic leg but for these guys I used the fenrisian wolf pack which are just plain wolves, no bionic legs to be found so all good!

BrokeToof da Scrapa - November 24, 2012 07:31 PM (GMT)
Oh ok,
I must have been looking at the other ones but cool.
I had thought about doing sum then like that be for but i thought the models were to big. Do you think the white lions from the high elve chariot would work?
:)

gcoolt - November 25, 2012 12:52 AM (GMT)
I like the theme you have going on with the ice and I have to agree that yhetees would fit in well as trolls with this theme.

Wazoo - November 26, 2012 12:08 AM (GMT)
Very cool looking wolf riders! The wolves really lend an air of wildness to the unit! I am really looking forward to seeing them done!

apex - December 1, 2012 03:17 PM (GMT)
Finished my test model for my savage orc wolf riders.

Let me know what you think. Wanted them to look like they were in the same snowy conditions as my night gobbos above but obviously moving at a much faster pace as on the move.

Think I need a little work on the wolf's face and perhaps something with the blood to make it look more recent.

Very cool! I really like the bloody pawprints and the really cool base! A very nice model you have there! The blood looks good, especially on the highlights. I would perhaps have added a darker tint to the shaded areas though...

EntertainMe - December 1, 2012 06:01 PM (GMT)
Looking very good!

I'd perhaps add a bit more blood around the mouth of the wolf. This is the thing he is attacking with after all.

Thanks for the comments. Will work on the blood. Bit more on the mouth and a little more depth with darker blood in places. Thanks guys. Will post when all five are done!

apex - December 8, 2012 08:25 AM (GMT)
Just a quick update.

These are by no means finished, need to finish the wolves with a little blood around their mouths and also need to give them my dose of snow effect to introduce them to the blizzard. Bases need snowing up too but hopefully you can see how they are progressing.

I have also converted the standing Wurrzag model so he can ride a wolf along with his other savage mates. Can't stand the mounted Wurrzag model provided by GW so I decided to do it myself. The standing Wurzzag is perhaps my favourite model ever so hope I have done it justice. I may make a green stuff rope belt or loin cloth before painting too so let me know what you think.

I then also have my standard bearer to do which I may attempt tomorrow as my advent daily challenge.

The big double base on the right of the photos is for Wurrzag's wolf I am thinking as it leaps over the rocky mound. I needed something to raise him above the rest due to his large cloak interferring with the other models.

I also have a good days painting ahead of me today so should get most of these finished off and put together a back rank of another 5

Nice work, the boar head makes me sad, poor boar, mean Savage Orcs. :( I'm looking forward to seeing how your mounted Wurrzag turns out. Keep up the good work!

Awsome! Love the snow theme!! :)

Wazoo - December 8, 2012 07:02 PM (GMT)
Looking good! I am looking forward to seeing wurrzag finished! The orcs could perhaps benefit from a little more colour? I am thinking another spot colour other than the blood, perhaps pale blue tatoos? They seem a little plain to me...

Very minor update after the advent painting challenge. Need to give the banner a bit of snow but this is how my line of savage wolf riders is shaping up. Should be quite menacing when completed. And Wurrzag now has his lovely mount!

Banner is looking great. I like the look of the boars head. Nicely impressive base for warrzag. Going to look good when painted.
