Title: A Few Orcs...

Shadowlord - June 25, 2012 11:51 AM (GMT)
I have been away from greenskins for a long time but now I have found the urge, and rebought my sold orcs, to paint an O&G army consisting of orc units and goblin support units. I want a steppe sorta feel so I will get a lot of wolf riders (convert them using goblin arms, legs and torsos with other shields, grot heads and Fenrisian wolves).

I will not include any Black Orcs (too dangerous), nor any Night Goblins/squigs (too sneaky), or any Savage Orcs (too crazy) INITIALLY because of that specific look and feel I am after. I will however have common orcs, arrer boyz, big uns, and when they make new ones - a lot of common goblins. The army will also include three giants, scores of warmachines, wolf riders, orc boar boyz, chariots, and common trolls.

Blogs are not for me so I will just show some of the stuff I have made that I take pictures of now and then. The conversions this army offers almost match my Ogres so I will probably do a lot of these as time fly by. Some of my favorite Orcs of all time are the previous 40K Nobz so I am using a few of these on my bosses.

Here are the Warboss Shorka Toothcracka and Bogrot the BSB (and a new banner style on a common orc I am testing):

The Warboss is my favorite orc model of all time (he is muscled like an ox and has a duck like walk), the LE BSB, with added parts from the plastic Warboss kit. I have one like him that I intend to mount on the Azhag Wyvern. The BSB is the Ruglud body with the AoW Orc Lord axe, with the banner from the plastic Orc Warboss kit, and a head from a 40K Nob.

Here is a Big Boss I named Longshanks (I have added paint to the lip ring and shield handle):

He is done by using the metal Arrer Boy with the sword using a sword from the plastic Orc Warboss kit, a metal shield (the new ones GW sells), and a head from 40K Nob (and some greenstuff fur).

My last, and most posh Big Boss named Zagstug:

He is done using the Wyvern rider body, Black Orc Big Boss axe, Black Reach Nob head, a metal Orc shield, and some greenstuff.

I also painted Skarsnik (this weekend) and Gorbad (some time ago) for two friends (I personally do not use special characters).

Groznit Goregut - June 25, 2012 01:54 PM (GMT)

Krysdagger - June 25, 2012 04:28 PM (GMT)

Tartar Sauce - June 25, 2012 04:51 PM (GMT)
Its always nice to see your work, good stuff as usual.

Do you use something like Tamiya's Smoke to get the wet affect on the blood and Squig tongue?

Shadowlord - June 25, 2012 05:11 PM (GMT)
Thanks guys!

Skin recipe -> WAAAGH Green, Agrax wash, thin Loren Forest green.

Wet Tongue -> regular gloss varnish

Blood -> Tamyia Clear Red in various stages with black color

No blog planned though. B)

Morkmillian - June 25, 2012 09:50 PM (GMT)
is that rugluds main body for one of your BSB's (middle one in first pic)? :)

Da Spawn Man - June 25, 2012 11:34 PM (GMT)
Very nice work. Your painting makes the figures look heavy - I like that.

Krolog da FaceMangler - June 26, 2012 04:35 AM (GMT)
Great looking mini's that dark colors on Gnobbla are just amazing!

The painting is awesome, very inspiring.
Keep up the brilliant work

amplebob - June 29, 2012 09:21 AM (GMT)
Wicked orcs. Great stuff man.

unwanted - June 29, 2012 11:24 AM (GMT)
I agree, those are some very nice Orcs, they're really well-painted, and each of them oozes character.

Shadowlord - July 18, 2012 10:50 AM (GMT)
I am extremely happy that I had the willpower to finish a full unit, something that I aven't done in years if it hasn't been converted first. This is regular Orcs with nothing special and with a limited palette.

My converted Big Un unit is also done, hooray! :D

LOL!

By special I mean not converted and straight out of the box. Limited palette is as follows, two greens, three washes, two metal, one red, one brown, one grey, and one whitish color.

Thanks though. B)

azhagmorglum - July 18, 2012 03:34 PM (GMT)
That is one impressive orc unit ! And the painting is simple yet top notch !
I like the addition of the (big) boss, I've got the model too and your conversion makes me want to do something similar with mine.

The big un's unit look very promising. If you manage to finish painting it, you'll have another great unit. Keep it up !

Groznit Goregut - July 18, 2012 03:58 PM (GMT)
Looks awesome! Any chance of getting some pics of the rank and file?

Shadowlord - July 19, 2012 08:53 PM (GMT)
R&F pics will come later when I unpack them for an army shot. :D

But first I just wanted to add that a limited palette does not mean you can't paint models to a good standard. For instance this Ogre Giant's skin is done with just Tallarn Flesh mixed with bone and one wash (three washes if you add the tongue and battered nose) with water added in various stages.

Holy crap! That is phenomenal!

Being the cheap bastage I am, this is really inspiring. Means I don't need crap tons of paints if I can learn how to make them work together.

To be honest all those different shades are for lazy sods like me who want to just reach for the next colour premixed when trying to do regiments at a time :D.

Really liking the orcs, you may just have answered my question of how I'll manage to do some really nice skin tones on green skins for me :D *blatantly steals formula!!*

Will be following this with interest!

Finished my final orc boss - needed one with a great wpn.

I have one orc shaman left (need two), and three hero goblins on wolves (warboss, big boss, and great shaman) to make my bosses ten models strong and fully completed.

Old Gobsnite - August 2, 2012 12:46 PM (GMT)
wow great job! they look great, am currently building a Goblin army so looking forward to seeing your Goblin characters painted up!

Klavier - August 2, 2012 01:12 PM (GMT)
 Great bosses, so well painted and converted.

They are the epythome of orcyness and brutality :o

BorkBork - August 2, 2012 01:28 PM (GMT)
excellent paint job!!!

Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull - August 2, 2012 04:38 PM (GMT)
Great bosses, keep up the good work on those greenies.

Thitanium Prince - August 2, 2012 07:43 PM (GMT)
Amazing models :D those metal heads really gives them a lot of characterization!

Shadowlord - August 2, 2012 07:49 PM (GMT)
Thanks folks!

Anyone who can guess what body I used for my great weapon orc? :D

Klavier - August 2, 2012 08:24 PM (GMT)
:o Me!Me!Me!
It's from one of the animosity little diorama :D

Warboss Gorbolg - August 2, 2012 08:51 PM (GMT)
Great painting across the board (including your trolls). You tend to use "realistic" colors (at least in my mind), which I really enjoy and prefer myself. Big Boss Zagstug as well as the big orc unit are my favorites.

That is correcto mundo! :D

Stashman gave me the model and said: you can probably do something with this (I just bought the set for one of my giants after I painted it) and I did. Some Orc Boss hands, plasticard tube, greenstuff, Blorc axe, and an old Savage Orc head and he is a nice addition to my rowdy gang.

@ Gorbolg - Thanks!
