Title: My Budget Waagh
Description: Getting back into the hobby.
MatGin - June 8, 2012 03:32 PM (GMT)
Ok here goes.
I have been out of the hobby for ages, last time I played a game I was 16 and I'm now 26. I decided recently to get back into it, but since I don't earn much I have had to cobble an army through a combination of eBay, friends and charity shops.
Anyway this blog is going to track my attempts to get an army fully painted and finished (something I have never managed to achieve in the past).
I've already finished a couple of units so without further ado here they are:

My 'Big Uns'

Another angle

And my giant
Any feedback on them is most welcome!
Thitanium Prince - June 8, 2012 04:07 PM (GMT)
Amazing start for your plog  those paintjobs are ace, and the yellow is a striking choice!
Guru_Swami - June 8, 2012 04:25 PM (GMT)
Agreed, this is a fantastic start to the army!! I think you're doing it right by collecting slowly and painting things up as you go. Your unit of Big 'Uns is very striking!
EyeStabba - June 8, 2012 04:29 PM (GMT)
That's a nice bright colourscheme, and a good looking unit!
And damn I love that giant model, I wished they still sold that one instead of that molten hunk of plastic we have now :(

Great stuff! Awesome vibrant colours and a nice overall colourscheme. Just looks very good. How did you pull that yellow off? It's so deep and...nice. :D

Thanks a lot for the kind replies everyone.
The yellow was achieved relatively simply. White undercoat followed by one coat of iyanden darksun. Washed with Gryphonne sepia then highlighted with darksun mixed with increasing amounts of white. Unfortunately these are all old colours and the pots I have are fast running out. im going to need to source a few pots and stock up.
I'm currently working on a few wolf riders and a wyvern (yellow of course). WIP shots should be up tomorrow...

Great paintwork there mate! Tell us, what do you do for the green? I like the shade you have there.
While I think of it, here is a link to a thread (a bit old, but still relevant) that is all about budget gaming!

That looks really nice mate.
Keep 'em coming :)
amplebob - June 9, 2012 12:13 AM (GMT)
Really good start man. I particularly like the russian style hat on the 2nd orc from the left.
Da Spawn Man - June 9, 2012 01:58 AM (GMT)
Nice painting! Make sure you list what paints you used and techniques! Not coz I wanna stealz dem or anyfink! :D
MatGin - June 9, 2012 10:03 AM (GMT)
Thanks again everyone :)
The greenskin was done with a very old pot of Goblin Green (old round tall pots) so not sure if the shade is still available. Basically its just goblin green over a white undercoat. Shaded with Thraka Green wash then touched up again with goblin green. first highlight in goblin green mixed with a bit of white and yellow. Final highlight is goblin green and white only.
As promised here are some WIP photo's:

Wolf Riders nearing completion (though wolves still need to be done)

Nearly finished boar chariot. Just finishing off the base and touching up some bits I missed.
And finally...

The starting work on my Wyvern. I got this second hand and unfortunately the metal kit did not fit together at all well and had to be heavily green stuffed. I hashed this up a bit and some of the joins need a lot more work to make them look seamless.
Guru_Swami - June 9, 2012 03:04 PM (GMT)
Wow, that chariot and the wolf riders really look good! Can't wait to see how the Wyvern comes along. I'm working on some wolf riders right now as well and I'm having a really hard time getting the wolves to look just the way I want them to. Have any tips to share?

great paintjob on these miniatures,
i really like the green/yellow scheme and you painted it neat and clean, looking forward to see the wyvern
MatGin - June 18, 2012 06:58 PM (GMT)
Hi again,
progress on my waagh has been a little slow of late but I have managed to finish up 5 wolf riders so here they are for judgement.

I'm not that happy with the wolves themselves. I bought them second hand and the previous owner had undercoated over an earlier paint job by the looks of it so a lot of detail has been lost. I haven't been able to find an adequate way of stripping paint from plastic figs yet so just had to make the most of these.
My wyvern is slowly getting there but still has a lot of work to go:

As always feedback is appreciated.
Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull - June 18, 2012 07:01 PM (GMT)
Great looking wolfriders, the wyvern looks also promising.
Cheers,

really like the stuff in this blog.
paint jobs are great!
i really like the colour scheme on the wolfs and ive been trying to decide how to do mine and i thin i may be borrowing a scheme similar to yours :)
cant wait to see the wyvern finished.

Great work on what you have so far. Very well done indeed.
I'm always impressed by people who can paint yellow so well and not make it look too over the top.
Keep up the great work. Can't wait to see more. :D
MatGin - August 30, 2012 04:47 PM (GMT)
Ok, long time since my last update and not really all that much done since then either :(
I have managed to pick up some Spear Orcs and some Black Orcs and have started painting these up.
The Spear orcs are mostly complete. I just need to decide on shield and banner designs;

The next few photos are just works in process. Some Black Orcs, more wolf riders and a nice fine cast shaman (the only 'new' miniature I have bought so far);

Thats all for now. As always comments and critiques are equally welcome.
Thanks

Absolutely love the bright and bold colour scheme! Looks like great accuracy too, even with the rank and file guys I can't notice any sloppy brushwork at all!
I am also trying to make a budget orc army in this forum section, we may be starting a fashion here haha! :)
MatGin - August 30, 2012 09:23 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the comments. Trust me the camera is being generous, there are sloppy brush strokes all over the place
My plan for keeping this army cheap is working quite well. I try not to buy too much unless I have most of what I already own painted (unless I see a bargain that is) and have gone for mostly Orcs to keep the model count down. I'm aiming to stop around 2500 points but knowing me I'll keep going while there are models I still don't have.

Great work in this plog !
I like the use of yellow, from clothes to armour pieces. The skin of the orcs is wonderful too.
I can't wait to see the finished wyvern.

Thanks very much. The wyvern has been on the back burner for a while now as I wanted to focus on the core of my army a bit and I also hit a wall in thinking how I wanted it to turn out. I may even have to strip the paint off and start again at this rate...
Thitanium Prince - August 31, 2012 04:29 PM (GMT)
the use of yellow is absoultely Awesome. the clean work and the striking scheme make them really pop :)
MatGin - September 7, 2012 10:03 PM (GMT)
Just a quick update with my first completed character, my wizened Orc Shaman:

I spent a little more time on this guy than I normally do but unfortunately my camera is not all that good for single figs. It's the first finecast figure I have ever bought and although I had no real problems with it I can't quite see any benefits over metal... Still I love the sculpt and it was a pleasure to paint.
Paiant Slapah - September 7, 2012 11:10 PM (GMT)
Super nice work! Everything in general looks great.
MatGin - November 25, 2012 08:48 PM (GMT)
Hi everyone.
It's been a long time since my last update. Real life has been getting in the way and I have been finding it hard to fit the hobby in at the moment.
To try and get myself motivated again I decided to get all my completed stuff out of my cupboard (where I have to store everything out of the way in our small flat) and take a few army shots. Not much new has been added but what the hey.

The army as it stands. My photos are taken with a mobile phone so please excuse the poor quality.

First gang of Wolf Riders

Spear boyz

My Shaman currently leading the small horde

Second gang of Wolf Riders

Big Unz mob with AHW

Boar Chariot

Giant and his snottling friend

And something new, a Doom Diver and a Spear Chukka.

And my current WIP. These Black Orcs are almost done. Just need to do the command group.
Hopefully this will spur me on to finish all of the models I currently have. After the BOs are done I just have 10 more wolf riders and a unit of 5 boar riders. I also have 10 arrer boyz but I dont like the minis so not sure I'll use them.
As always any feedback is really very much appreciated.

Very nice, I really like the nice clean colour scheme, the army looks great and it is really distinct. Its a very good start!

Liking the black orks and those are some very decent army shots given they were taken on your phone. I really struggle to take good looking army shots. Must be the light you've sorted out.
Anyways, keep it up.
Thitanium Prince - November 26, 2012 01:25 PM (GMT)
Solid work, the army is growing really nicely, the clean scheme is a great choice :D
