Title: Workshop Gone Digital!
Description: This is actually really cool!

Morten C - June 2, 2012 12:20 PM (GMT)
I have no idea why I haden't heard about this, but I have been a fan of this idea for years, and it's finally happening.

All rulebooks, armybooks, expansions etc will in the future be available IN DIGITAL!

I'm getting an Ipad!

Craze_b0i - June 2, 2012 12:28 PM (GMT)
I am still the old fashioned type who prefers to buy my books in print. Though I can see it would appeal to some.

What I really wish is they would put all the painting tutorials back up on the website. It can't be that hard to just edit the paint names.

Morten C - June 2, 2012 12:47 PM (GMT)
well, the videos show that all the digital books wil have painting guides. The Giant squig scroll of binding looks like it has it, so does the sapce marine codex. So I think it's a single matter of workshop not giving stuff away for free, that doesn't sell more miniatures.

I really am hoping that the digital versions of armybooks will be updated whenever there's a new erreta, so you won't have to look at FAQ's anymore :)

Turelio - June 2, 2012 01:12 PM (GMT)
The ad for it makes it looks pretty interactive. As Morten mentioned, if they update when an errata is released, it would be even better.

Morten C - June 2, 2012 01:30 PM (GMT)
Yeahr... I also hope that the White dwarf magazine will be available this way... Man I would love that! :)

the misses ordered one today :)

Groznit Goregut - June 2, 2012 02:37 PM (GMT)
I wonder how good it might for an iphone? Also, I kind of want to support them on this as I'd love for them to do more digital stuff. I don't know about paying same price for an army book that's digital, but the .99 stuff could be a good way to support it and (hopefully) be useful on my phone.

Now, if I can only get my phone back from the snotling...

Snikpik - June 2, 2012 02:51 PM (GMT)
I dont own an ipad and I dont want to sit on the bog with an ipad.

Awesome for you! :D I'd like one, but all my money goes to books and little plastic men...£400 or whatever it is is quite a lot of money for a 16-year old.

I think I could really get into this...but why can't I have it on my iPhone and sync my iBooks account? ARGH

I think this update does not look very practical... Of course if players have enough money and interest to go with it then it's fine for them, but myself I'm quite happy with my books thank you (I don't have an iPad and no intentions to buy one).

- Cheers, Skarsnik.

Da Git - June 2, 2012 07:58 PM (GMT)
What Skarsnik said. Flipping through a real book is way faster when searching for rules anyway.

why? you have a search function on in the army books! I'm pretty sure it's faster on the iPad, especially if you're not sure where to look.

Groznit Goregut - June 2, 2012 09:06 PM (GMT)
It would be nice to have all army books on one electronic device that you can pull up any time you want to....

It is not. Me and my cousin tried that when searching through rules in a book and a pdf on a pad just a week ago. Flipping through pages take ages on a pad, as you go one at a time, and the search function will require typing which is a lot slower on a pad than on a computer. And then I haven't even mentioned Apple's autocorrect feature. :)

And, as someone said somewhere, the Errata and FAQ. :) They could even edit the rules changes into the files themselves with update notes...

I have many thoughts on this step. Aside from, well if only they had done this many years ago it can be summed up in one emoticon :yarr!: Should we tell them they've been digital for a while or not?

Craze_b0i - June 2, 2012 10:06 PM (GMT)
Well I just checked the store, looks like the Ultramarine painting guide is £3.99, so that seems a likely benchmark.

cb_rex - June 3, 2012 04:52 PM (GMT)
These releases do look pretty neat, however it would be better if this was a cross platform release, i.e. on pc and android as well as ipad, but maybe that will come later. Ideally it would be built in html5 so it can be viewed in any half decent web browser.

I couldn't exactly make out from the videos if the Space Marine codex for example, included an integrated army list builder, but if it does that would be pretty cool. Never the less I'll be sticking to my laptop and spreadsheet for the time being.

Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull - June 3, 2012 05:42 PM (GMT)
It is good they are doing this, but I won't use it since I also prefer books. ( I do own an Ipad but I use it only for work).

Cheers,
G

I don't see this happening. The reason for choosing iPad is probably because it has much better security in these kind of releases.

If they'd release it for any kind of PC system it would be for download on a multitude of websites before GW could even update their website saying it's released.

It's a shame though as I don't own and never will own an iPad (though I might see me buying a similar thing which is not vendor-locked on the software)

Whoa, they are charging for these things?!?! If it had been an extra in the marine codex I could see its purpose, an added incentive to stop using the torrented pdf file. But seriously charging for a painting guide? It shows they will try to get money from even the painting guides they used to have on their websote for free. guess they won't be coming back.
GW have once again pulled an all colours of WTF move, shame on them, for once I am hoping this endevour fails and bites them in the ass.

Craze_b0i - June 4, 2012 11:31 PM (GMT)
It's certainly disappointing, there used to be free painting tutorials in the army books, even when that stopped that was ok because you could goto the website to read them. To access them now or in future it seems you will need to buy a blooming iPad first. And then pay your £4 sucker-tax.
:(

Morten C - June 5, 2012 09:36 AM (GMT)
I will give you guys... Those price tags are extremely harsh! I though that when you bought an army book on the iPad, you would get painting guides, eretta updates, and all sorts of nice stuff, that they didn't put in a normal one. If that isn't the case, paying more than for a book is ridiculous. And those painting guides.... 4 pound? that's extremely expensive... It's almost as expensive as a white dwarf magazine...

Still, I am looking forward to this, but the prices do seam harsh!

Groznit Goregut - June 5, 2012 06:10 PM (GMT)
I do like the $1 for the monsters, though. Maybe buy just the monsters you want instead of the whole Monstrous Arcanum? I mean, I'd love the whole book, but I can get the rules for just a monster or two for dollars instead of shelling out the whole book.

The whole rule books aren't for everyone, though.

I can't seem to find them on the iphone, though. Are they only ipad?

New Digital Products for June
- Codex: Space Marines. Expanded, fully interactive and now totalling a staggering 324 pages. Comes with searchable glossaries, 360º miniatures galleries, and fully up-to-date rules including all the Space Marine weapons and wargear, such as the new Stormtalon Gunship.

It seems the armybooks and codex' will be updated with new stuff though. Very nice :)

If they had includeded painting instructions into the AB's it would have been well worth the price... it's only the stand-alone painting guides that i think sound horribly expensive.

The points about scrolls of binding is great though :)
