Title: A Forest Goblin Army Blog

Pilgrim Pod - June 1, 2012 09:20 PM (GMT)
Hello there guys. I've recently signed up for an escalation league at one of my local gaming clubs, believing it to be the perfect opportunity to delve into the world of WHFB. Starting at the end of the month with 500 points some of the guys on these boards have kindly helped me with my list. Like most here I'm hoping that by starting an army blog it will help me in my quest to build a Fantasy army. I look forward to any and all advice you chaps can throw my way.

Here's the humble beginning of my first unit of goblins.

I just need to acquire a few one handed weapons, tidy up the sand on the bases, green stuff some feathers and bones to decorate the little green fellas with to give them a more 'foresty' vibe then it's time to give them a lick of paint. I thought I'd have a go at making my own movement tray whilst I was at it.

:)

Good try at it. But the tray is a bit warped.

A way to restore this is to 'paint' the bottom with PVA glue.
The warping is because the glue shrinks as it dries pulling the top of the cardboard in. So if you do the same on the bottom this should remedy this somewhat.

Also, I don't know what you've used as a base but I find the back of a notepad to be perfect for this (the thing with paper leaves on it, not the windows program!).

See if you can get a few bits from a Lizardmen player. The Saurus, Temple Guard and Cold One sprues all have quite a few bits with feathers on them and many of them will be going spare. That could save you a lot of greenstuffing.

Turelio - June 2, 2012 01:19 PM (GMT)
Looks like a good start. Have you considered trying to get some of the Arachnarork crew models to scatter through the unit? They are pretty nice Forest Goblins.

Thitanium Prince - June 2, 2012 01:45 PM (GMT)
That's a nice start, it's always good to see some new forest themed orojects ^^ here is an old WD article about forest goblin simple conversions, maybe it could be useful as source of inspiration ^^

Nice start. Do you have experience with green stuff?
Just have a look at the ebay shops with bitz, there you can find a lot you can use.
Furthermore, on ebay (and similar sites) sometimes you can get a lot of stacked leftovers for cheap.
The piderrider chaps would work well indeed!

grtz,

Kees

Thanks. The base of the movement tray is just some old sheet of plastic I found lying around at work. It's quite pliable so I'm confident I'll be able to straighten it out.

Anton, there's at least one Lizardman player at my club so I'll ask him if he has any bits going spare. I'll also take a look over on eBay. Thanks for the tip.

Turelio, I eventually want one of those in my army. I'll keep my eyes peeled on eBay for some of it's crew. Thanks for the idea.

Thanks for linking that article Thitanium Prince, it certainly does offer inspiration. There'll be at least one Goblin with a bone through their nose you can be assured.

Thanks Kees. I don't really have any green stuff experience other than patching stuff up though I have seen a few You Tube tutorials. Google is my friend!

Below is my first attempt at making some feathers. The first few probably best resemble leaves but towards the end I think I cracked it. I might glue the ones that look like leaves to some goblins crotches to hide their modesty. Ribena berries anyone?!

Here's my first proper WiP Goblin. I'm trying to find a nice, quick colour scheme that's easy to use across a regiment and that works for me. I'm getting there.

I like the feathers/leaves! :) And the test gobbo looks cool I think, great potential here.

Good start on the leaves/feathers :D

Pilgrim Pod - June 3, 2012 01:39 PM (GMT)
Those feathers will not win any modelling awards but I think they look pretty good. I just need to paint them up now. A nice vibrant tone should hopefully bring them to life.

Hey Prince would you appear to have a bigger size of this picture ?

EntertainMe - June 4, 2012 09:29 AM (GMT)
Those feathers look great. And as for them resembling leaves I think some paint will remedy that.

The test model looks good as well.
Only the metal blade seems a bit wrong for forest goblins.

I'd imagine them having stone of wooden weapons.
Stone weapons can be created pretty easily just by chopping into the blade with a hobby knife. As seen on some old savage Orcs of mine:

Wood should be similar.

@AM those are the biggest versions I could find :(

Anyway you're doing a great job with those feathers :D Have you considered to add a bit of warpaint or some tatoo? It would improve the tribal look :D

Oooh thanks for idea. Tribal tattoos... I'll definately have a bash at some.

Thanks for the input. I never gave stone weapons a thought. I'll implement the look across the whole of my army.

My completed test rank and file gobbo. I've 99% cracked it now.

And... Now 99.9% there I'd say

Time to paint up the rest of the unit and I'll then throw up a completed photo of them.

Test model looks good. Forest goblins are always a decent laugh.
As someone said above, the arachnarok kit will give you lots of cool parts to convert forest goblins with.

Pilgrim Pod - June 11, 2012 08:45 PM (GMT)
I've been busy trying to finish assembling and decorating my first unit of gobbos. I've also magnetised their movement tray whilst I've been at it.

Notice the little green guy with a bone through his nose. I'm especially proud of him.

Stone hewn plasticard weapons created due to EntertainMe's advice.

My greenstuff feathers are coming on leaps and bounds.

I've picked up another twenty Goblins to work my magic on to complete the unit and also ten Spider Riders and a Shaman. I'm getting closer to that 500 point mark!

Snikpik - June 11, 2012 08:54 PM (GMT)
Nice idea and nice greenstuffed feathers.

Thitanium Prince - June 11, 2012 11:12 PM (GMT)
This project is growing better and better :D the greenstuff work is clean and imoressive looking, like the plasticard weapons, they're absolutely perfect ^^

BorkBork - June 12, 2012 05:42 AM (GMT)
Nice greenstuffing. Did you pin those feathers?

oh and if you ever get bored of making feathers, you should ask a high elf player for his spare feathers from the archers box

Da Spawn Man - June 12, 2012 07:52 AM (GMT)
What are those leaves doing on their heads??!!

Just messing... ;)

Looking good. Can't wait to see everything painted!

Malleus - June 12, 2012 08:04 AM (GMT)
Looking good mate, nice to see a Forest Goblin resurgence

Ruront - June 12, 2012 03:05 PM (GMT)
I like them!

amplebob - June 12, 2012 03:14 PM (GMT)
Cool feathers man, it looks good.
If I had any detailed greenstuff skill at all I wound have done a lot of my army like this. Cool to see someone else getting it done.

Pilgrim Pod - June 14, 2012 08:16 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the kind and encouraging words guys.

Thanks for the info. I know a couple of High Elf players so I'll be sure to see if they have anything spare that may be of use to me. Same thing goes for the Lizardman players I know too!

This little guy arrived through the post yesterday. I really would like to have a go at making something special of his base to make him stand out from the crowd.

Just trying out my newly made lightbox to see if it's any better than a white sheet of A4 paper. Hmm perhaps...

Remember to not fold the background paper, it gives more definition :)
Anyway this shaman is perfect for the forest gobbos, and I like a lot the painted sample :D

Pacific - June 14, 2012 11:30 PM (GMT)
I really love the head-feathers, some really nice green-stuff work! It makes them look very different.

Have you thought of some other ways to make them look like Forest goblins?

Great to see an army like this in any case, I remember seeing metal units of forest goblins back in the day. Not sure if they are still available these days?

I can't really think of anything simple that would add to my forest theme other than what the guys have previously suggested. I'm always open to more suggestions though!
There's a few of the old (4th edition?) metal goblins on eBay but they cost a small fortune! I really would like to add some but not at the cost of what they are selling for.

The escalation league I'll be playing in is now nailed on to start at the beginning of July so I'm frantically trying to get my hands on and assemble the remaining units for my 500 point list. Paint will have to wait I'm afraid. My original list and it's subsequent amendments can be found here... 500 Point List
Due to finances, league rules and time I've had to have a play around with my list again.

QUOTE
Army selection: For the first two months (500 & 750) your army may only be made up of hero, troop and special choices. Once we start to to play bigger games (1000 points) then we'll start using lord and rare choices.

Baring the above in mind I've decided to go with the following...

Heroes

Goblin Shaman

Core

Common Goblins x 29
-Musician
-Shields
-Nasty skulkers x 2

Common Goblins x 29
-Musician
-Shields
-Nasty skulkers x 2

Forest Goblin Spider Riders x 5

Forest Goblin Spider Riders x 5

Special

Goblin Wolf Chariot

Total: 498pts

I've just picked up another box of common goblins which now leaves me with 60 of the little fellas to get ready by the end of the month. All I need to get my hands on now is the Skulkers and Chariot. I might have a go at fashioning my own.

Here's a little WiP starting with my Spider Riders and their funky magnetised movement trays.

As you should be.
It's little stuff like this that make converting loads of mini's fun to do.
Just making 300 of the same model will become boring after the first few batches, believe me!

Nice, Glad I could plant some ideas in your head.

Any chance of a closer look at those goblins.
Pics are a bit small at the moment.

As soon as I've got something painted up I'll chuck in some close ups. I've not made as much progress as I would have liked recently.

TODAY IS THE DAY! The escalation league at my local gaming club starts today and I've just about scraped together the entry 500 points. It's a little dishevelled and in need of a lot of work but I've got a month now to get it finished to a table top standard.

Keep up the good work.

Unfortunately, I'm having a hard time trying to get some paint down on the little mites. The sheer amount of them is quite overwhelming!

amplebob - August 29, 2012 01:46 PM (GMT)
Man, cool to see you have much forest goodness assembled. On getting painting done, just try to get whole models done, before moving on to another, or do small batches of 5-10. I make myself a list of all my stuff and what state it is in, and update it as I go. Really helps me get stuff done.
