Title: A Couple Of Questions About Squig Hoppers

staks - June 1, 2012 10:39 AM (GMT)
So I was thinking of trying a unit of squig hoppers but had some questions I needed answering.

1. Can these guys reform outside of combat? If you have compulsory movement does this mean it's impossible to reform?

2. If a character on a GCS joins a unit of hoppers you can reroll the random movement roll. Does this mean you can also reroll the flee and pursuit moves? Assuming you want to reroll the flee result, do you declare this before or after you see your opponents pursuit roll?

3. Now that skirmishers rank up do you pivot around the middle to face the direction you are moving before you move the unit? Assuming you were two ranks of 7 (14 models) you would be losing a lot of ground if you wanted to change direction and move horizontally should you pivot around the centre first.

Thanks :)

Don't know 2 or 3, but I thought that skirmishers could free reform?

Oops my bad, I haven't played with skirmishers under 8th and I only had my first games last week after a break so my knowledge on the rules wasn't perfect. Ok that makes things interesting then. I guess the real question is when can you free reform? Can you do it before, after and during your random movement? Since a reforms restrictions are only that you can't move twice your movement value (which is quite large thanks to random movement) if you could do it before you move you could stretch your unit length or width to increase your chances to reaching designated target.

Do you have a rulebook? I have one but is allllll the way over there... :(

1: Yes, Skirmishers. :)

2: Hm...yes? Not 100% sure, but I'd say so.

3: Yes.

Someone mentioned to me that squig hoppers can't reform because reform is a procedure which happens in the remaining moves phase, not in the compulsory movement phase. I assumed then that they couldn't until I read this little gem on page 25 of the rulebook -

OTHER COMPULSORY MOVES
Aside from fleeing troops, units that are forced to move in the Compulsory Moves sub-phase otherwise follow the normal movement rules, unless clearly stated. Any further rules that apply to units that have a compulsory move will be described in their entry in the relevant army book, for example, they will often have to move at a set speed or in a given direction. These compulsory moves can be resolved in any order the controlling player wishes, providing that all Flee! moves have already been completed.

Am I wrong in assuming this statement confirms that they are entitled to all of the normal movement rules so long as they aren't a fleeing troop moving in the compulsory movement phase?

No you are not wrong just because the move in the Compulsory Moves sub-phase dosnt mean they can not use there free reform. They are still skirmishers no matter what phase they move in.

Agree with all of them. The second is right too if I'm not mistaken.

Today something happened and I don't really know how the rules is!!!

A unit breaks from combat, hoppers pursue and run it down, but also comes into the flank of another unit, but this was becuse the unit was in "loose" formation, making it wider.

But in the skirmish rule, when yoy charge, the unit "tighten up" and it gets smaller, and in the random move it reads that if a unit makes contact, it counts as a charge???

Stupid unit and crazy rules.

Do you guys play PURSUE as the skirmish unit has to "tighten up" just like a charge, or how do you do.

Hope you understand my question!! :)

You are correct in that If your skirmishers contact another unit with the overrun they count as charging so rank up in the tight formation. Im not sure if the overrun would be made in there loose formation or tight but I would say they are skirmishers so would revert to there loose formation.

If the tighten up, they can be out of "range" to get into contact with another unit.

Yep thats a downfall but its not that bad in most situations.
