Title: Ok So Now What Giant...trolls...
eugeniusgenx - May 15, 2012 08:21 AM (GMT)
I have been working on my army and I want to know which way to go, I will get the arachnarok later, so I am thinking of getting or sculpting a giant, or should I get trolls... don't like stupidity so i am thinking giant, but it's expensive (200 points). Thoughts?

Most people will avoid giants. They tend to get killed before they get into combat. If you have other large creatures, they survive long and can do a lot of damage in combat.
You can really go wrong with trolls. Either as a single redirector, two in chariot formation, or a unit of 6 of them. Keep them close to your BSB and they work out fine.

I know what some will say, but I love Stone Trolls, much better than a Giant, although a Giant is fun and if the shooty stuff is targeting him, they're not targeting the rest of your army, mind you it IS a large points allotment for a large moving body with a target painted on him!!
I would definately go with the trolls. Can't afford to buy metal, look on ebay for Battle for Skull pass plastic trolls!!
River Trolls are also VERY nice!!

I think in part it depends on how big of games you are playing, what you run as a General and BSB, and how many cannon armies you face.
In the small games that I've been playing as I try to build up my own WAAAGH (1,000 points or less), I've actually found the giant to be more useful, primarily because it doesn't have to be baby-sat and can actuall run off on its own if I want/need it to.
I've been burned by troll stupidity in several games already. If your trolls go stupid, a significant part of your battle plan just got perturbed. Both models are great but if you're playing smaller games as you build up your army, trolls can be a liability unless you're willing to "build around them", in which case I suspect they can be quite effective.
Both have nice models and I will ultimately own both. :D

Trolls are the sh1t. Just keep a unit of orcs or gobbos with your bsb nearby.
Can't comment on the giant or a'rock, because I'd rather have lots of trolls :D

OK, so if I wanted to sculpt some trolls, how tall would they be? I know the giant is 109 mm, as best i can estimate they look to be around 60 mm high. Can someone tell be a more exact number? If I do go ahead and sculpt one I'll take pics because it will be my first real attempt. I have done parts before in green stuff but no actual full minis.

I like trolls better than giants. Actually I use a unit of 20 trolls and his potencial of destruction is very powerful. The only problem, redirectors units, but i dont care because I usually kill this units in first time with magic.

Giants are only really usable nowadays if you have lots of other toys in your army bearing down on the enemy, like manglers, arachs, pimp wagons and hoppers. Only then will they usually get into combat and be useful.
On the other hand, trolls are very powerful. They've now been moved to special, and that means you can take a lot more of them and horde them up. They can take a lot of pain and do real damage in combat. However, you must always keep them within your leadership bubble or they will be next to useless for the entire game unless you're extremely lucky.
I'd take a giant in the future, and in larger games like 3K +, and for now get some trolls because they're far more useful. :)
