Title: Wyverns Down The Ages

The 4th edition one is the only one I've painted and it's a nice model. I also own both Azhags, with the most recent one being the best model by far in this lot. I plan to paint it this year but haven't decided whether to convert it or just do Azhag.
Old Azhag isn't bad, I guess I should do something with that model at some point too.
Noisy Assassin - February 16, 2012 05:45 AM (GMT)
I really do love the newest Wyvern model (although Azhag's face is pretty fugly). Tis a shame that goblins can't take them. Might eventually have to make house rules for something like a duo of Big Bosses that ride around on one or something. I've also always thought that the Carnosaur would make a great Wyvern with Balrog wings stuck on it...
Anywho, very cool seeing all the old models lined up like this! Really neat how the miniatures have progressed.
theorox - February 16, 2012 07:23 AM (GMT)
Azhag's Wyvern is great, but I like the current plain Wyvern too. :)

I think the Mb08 Wyvern is great, e'en more as it set the standard fer its successors until the redesign of 6th/7th edition.
Wazoo - February 16, 2012 10:55 AM (GMT)
Nice! I really like the third from the top, especially the rider and saddle! I don't much like the new wyvren but the new Azhag one is great! I own and really like the 4th ed shaman's wyvren which is pretty cool but could use some repositioning, particularly the right foot being bend down to look like it is walking. Also bending the wings back makes it look more dynamic...

Well I agree with the comments about the new Azhag one being superb. but I am not so fond of the current warboss one with the pot belly.

I feel the same way - I like the potbelly Wyvern!
I really need to get round to painting my Finecast one!
Warboss Gorbolg - February 16, 2012 01:35 PM (GMT)
Another vote for the current one being the best, but the potbelly one having lots of character. I plan on owning both.
Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull - February 19, 2012 10:15 AM (GMT)
I love the new azhag( I have one in metal) and the current plain wyvern is pretty nice to. A friend of me has the old azhag and I will probably buy him since my friend never uses the model.
My vote would go to the lastest wyvern(azhag one)
Cheers,
G
BorkBork - February 19, 2012 10:33 AM (GMT)
Azhags wyvern is indeed great (wyvern only).
I really hate the potbelly wyvern with a passion. The sculpt is not bad, but the model is horribly undynamic.
Although it doesn't really show on the picture the old tony ackland wyvern is quite good.
Morten C - February 19, 2012 12:10 PM (GMT)
You've missed the 4th ed shammy wyvern. That one is great.
And I'm with Bork Bork on the dynamic part. I'm really glad that they make individual wings now. The standard wings introduced in 5th ed. Gets really boring.
If the 3rd ed. Wyvern was bigger, I would actually prefer that one. It looks really snake like.
BorkBork - February 19, 2012 12:19 PM (GMT)
he did not forget it.
the link to the pic is broken
Craze_b0i - February 19, 2012 06:57 PM (GMT)
Ooh better fix that. It was fine when I posted it... Edit: done. :)
GazakahStoneWallop - February 20, 2012 02:25 AM (GMT)
I gotta say the first one looks great - also a big fan of the current iterations of Azhag and the reg. wyvern boss.

Wow banelegions make the coolest models. This one only suffer from being to big for a wyvern. I guess its on s 100x100mm base? One could use it for SoM games as a green dragon stand in.
bananaman - February 29, 2012 04:23 PM (GMT)
Base is 100mm square - I've just had a play with the kit and he can also scale down to a 50mm wide base. Distance between inside of toes on each foot closest to closest point is about 48mm, so with a bit of slate/cork you can get him to fit say a 50mm sq or a 50mm wide x 100mm long quite easily.
I've been asked on Twitter and elsewhere about a rider option. We have no plans ourselves for a rider, but the kit is in resin and the spines on the neck are easilly removed with careful application of some clippers so if you have a suitable rider in mind the Wyvern is easilly adapted for such use.
Anton - February 29, 2012 05:46 PM (GMT)
Very nice, that one. Easily the best one out there apart from Azhag, who still takes the cake for me.
I was very pleased with the Sea Devil my
Ogre Hunter is riding; great sculpt and cast as well as any resin model, so I would buy Banelegions again.
I tend to feel that when it comes to monsters, a bit bigger is never a bad thing. Also, at least some of the people I play with would allow me to run a Great Wyvern houserule.
I can definitely see this one making it into my horde at some point.
Squigkikka - February 29, 2012 05:46 PM (GMT)
Wait a minute, you're from Banelegions? :P

I thought you spent enough time on TWF to know that he is.
Noisy Assassin - February 29, 2012 06:12 PM (GMT)
I really love the head and pose on this, but the skin suffers from being a little too crocodilian for my taste.
Craze_b0i - February 29, 2012 07:33 PM (GMT)
Wow nice wyvern, and absolutely HUGE. :)
I think if I played SOM I would count it as a dragon, a wyvern stat-line wouldn't do it justice.

I am - I haven't been on here for a while (it's been some time since I touched paint to greenskin!) I was suprised I remembered my login! It's been nearly 8 years since I registered here! Yup I'm Tim Fisher on TWF - I used to be bananaman on there too but changed my name when I was involved with selecting the England WFB ETC team (people tend to prefer your real name!).
:o
@ Anton - good work on the Keirioc-Cro with Hunter - that's excellent! Excellent size comparison with a Stonehorn as well - really hits home the size of the beast! I'll link to your blog on our Twitter account!
Anton - March 1, 2012 11:05 AM (GMT)
Thanks Bananaman, glad you like him.
Now the question is, who rides this big Wyvern and who rides Azhag's Wyvern? I will no doubt have both sooner or later. Fixed riders or interchangeable? So many choices ...

Hey, If you work for banelegions, do you know, how far in the process this guy is?

He's just incredibly cool! Any idea how large he is, as well?
Sorry for the OT.
bananaman - March 2, 2012 10:58 AM (GMT)
Hi Morten,
He's pretty far in the process - the sculpt is sat on my desk right now!
I'm preparing him for casting now and he will be May's BaneBeast release. He's very large - look out for comparison pics and full sizes when we preview him first Friday in April.
Sorry for the OT guys - back to Wyverns! Anton asked me earlier on TWF if the AoW warboss on boar would fit our Wyvern and the good news is that he does - so if anyone is thinking of adding a rider there's a possibility right there!
Anton - March 2, 2012 12:03 PM (GMT)
Thanks Bananaman I appreciate it.
I've started fishing for opinions in my O&G paintlog on this forum (link in sig), I think this guy could be the best fit but I'll keep looking for a while yet.
rufus sparkfire - March 6, 2012 02:42 PM (GMT)
I like the 6th edition wyvern the best. The new Azhag one is good, but the rider is so awful that it ruins it.
Too bad wyverns suck rules-wise!
bananaman - March 7, 2012 09:47 AM (GMT)
Rufus!
I thought you had fallen down a well or something! You still playing etc? Not seen you on the tourney scene for years. :)
As for the Wyvens rules - they do look sucky but a guy (Dave Sweeting) came 3rd at our Winter Incursion event (100+ players IIRC) with a Wyvern double Arachanorok list and he went undefeated with a Wyvern list at a 80+ ETC style team event a couple of weekends ago - There's something in the Wyvern list.
Tim
P.S we have new boards for the Slaughter ;) :P
Groznit Goregut - March 7, 2012 12:26 PM (GMT)

Holy Snotling! I have that shield! I was wondering how old it was, but that's pretty old....
Anton - March 7, 2012 12:44 PM (GMT)
That shield sprue was in use for many years after that model though.

Hey Tim,
I still play, I just stopped going to tournaments for some reason! I might have to make a comeback sometime.
Maybe I stopped because I was so embarrassed after breaking that board!
As for wyverns, maybe they are good and I just suck at warhammer.
bananaman - March 9, 2012 03:52 PM (GMT)
Rufus,
good to see you're still gaming - quite a few from back in the day have dropped out.
Get your comeback on - we run a load of WFB events at AMelstrom in Mansfield - drop me a PM on TWF (Tim Fisher) if you're ever interested and I'll fill you in on dates and info etc.
WYverns generally suck at the top end of competiveness (cool for gaming etc though) but a couple of players have done well with them - I think the WYvern and double Arachnorok build can really get stuck in and squish big expesnive units, has it's weaknessess though!
Wyverns throght the ages - I just had a look through the thread and realised that I've owned the 1st snake GW one, the WYvern with shaman (original counts as Azhag shaman), the maruader ickle Wyvern, 6th edition Wyvern, New Azhag, and of course the BaneLegions Wyvern - I never owned the actual 1st Azhag Wyvern but that's stll a pretty impressive list of Wyverns - what do you call a group of Wyverns anyway? A gaggle? A wing? A murder?
Dunno!
jaysta - March 18, 2012 12:23 AM (GMT)
This thread saved me.
I was going to buy the Banelegions Wyvern, which imo looks HOT, but I hadn't fully twigged as to it's size.
Ended up ordering Azhag in finecast instead.
Thanks for the thread!
