Title: Excersie Blog
Description: Come and join in - get fit!

Goofycabal - December 29, 2011 03:00 AM (GMT)
Edit: All right everyone. This started out as an self-inspirational blog for myself, but it's soon become apparent that there are a number of you who want to get into shape too - and you'd like to share your experience with us all. So sign up below, and join in! The more fit we all get, the more likely we are to be able to take on all the other Warhammer players and win!

Okay, one of the things I've been neglecting for far too long has been my physical well being. Well, maybe not quite so drastic sounding - I've been working a fairly physical and energy draining job for the last year and a half, so I've managed to lose a little bit of the old pot belly (two belt notches in fact).

BUT, that does not equate to being fit.

So, from Monday of this week, I've been getting back into the gym. And by gym, I mean my dad's gym gear. See, he's a long time body-builder/weight-trainer, and has his own equipment. And knows exactly what to do with it all. With 50-60 years experience with it (I can never remember which), I'm pretty sure I can trust him...

Now, I *used* to train on and off under his tutelage many years ago, but have fallen out of the habit. So badly, that since starting up again this Monday, I've found I can only lift a fraction of the weight I used to be able to do! I knew I was out of shape, but I hadn't realised it was quite so bad...

As a result of this, I'm pretty much having to start from scratch again (starting out with 10-15kg weights and only do a small number of repetitions).

So, why the blog? Well, mostly 'cause I want to keep track of my progress, and because I reckon if I actually have this posted up somewhere, I'll be more likely to want to keep up with the training.

At this stage, I've got nothing really much to report, progress wise, (largely because I've only had 3 separate sessions already) but I think I should get some measurements taken soon, so I can have a record here to compare later on. Not sure about getting any pics to accompany this, though...

Time to get back into shape. WAAAAGH! :yarr!:

WarbossKurgan - December 29, 2011 11:25 AM (GMT)
Nice idea Goofs! Hope you don't mind if I join in on this thread too!

I'm fairly active (as most of you know - I'm a Taekwon-Do black belt and instructor) but I'm still a bit overweight. I have lost a stone and a half in the last year, just through reducing portion sizes when I cook but I intend to loose another stone this year. Let's see how we do eh?

I'm currently 11st 13lbs (167lbs, 75.7kg). :cheese:
I'm 5'9" (175cm)

Anton - December 29, 2011 01:12 PM (GMT)
Weight lifting is great for your general wellbeing, but it is not going to do much for your waist.

Kurgan's idea is the best really, eat less. Especially eat less carbs. Never drink anything sweetened.

The best exercise for weight loss is anything endurance based. I recommend running as you can do it almost anywhere but swimming, cycling and cross-country skiing are all great.

Keep a diary of your training. I know three good online communities for this purpose in Swedish so I would assume there are plenty in English. It really helps to keep track of your progress and some statistics is always fun.

Exercise is vital for me as I work sitting down all day, which is really not a good idea but I can't do much about that. Since I don't have as much time as I'd like (work, kids, house, hobbies, etc.) running is the most efficient as I don't have to go anywhere, I just get out of the house and run for as long as I have time for. In 2011 I ran 2114.6 km.

Borzag - December 30, 2011 05:58 AM (GMT)
Already had a chat with Goofs a few days ago, will also be joining in on this :D

Sofar, health is ok (from being absolutely abysmal to new considerably smaller body) but that's slowed to a crawl this year. So hopefully this will help speed my weight loss & fitness back up :)

Either way, good luck baldy!

Borzag

EDIT: one of the things that's really helped me is leg & core exercises (admittedly the core is more for my back than my weight, but hey). Basically, building up leg muscles so that when I go running, walking etc I'm burning more calories. It's helped a fair bit. Plus your dad will know the importance of an even physique instead of just big arms, big shoulders and puny stick figure legs :)

Goofycabal - December 30, 2011 07:53 AM (GMT)
Looks like there's a fair bit of exercise going on everywhere then :D

@Snikpik: That's pretty impressive!

@Kera: Yoga could certainly help out - but having a VERY tight budget, not something I can afford - hence why I'm using equipment that is free for me to use ^_^

@Kurgan: More than happy for anyone who wants to take part to do so :)

@Anton: Well, it's not just weightlifting alone - my dad's a fully trained bodybuilder, so it's an all-round training regimen :D

@Borzag: You've done a great job so far with your own exercise/diet etc!

@All: Considering that my main work involves 3 solid hours of physical labour every weeknight, I'm getting some manner of endurance work right there. That's how I've already lost two belt notches in the past year and a half ^_^

Weight-wise, I'm roughly 65kgs, so I'm not really looking to 'lose' any weight - but that doesn't mean I don't need to lose the pot belly and put on some overall muscle mass. I'll get some measurements taken this weekend.

Looking forward to seeing how everyone else does in their training and/or dieting too - so keep your own updates coming too!

Craze_b0i - December 30, 2011 01:52 PM (GMT)
@ Kera. I used to do yoga classes for about 4 years. It really is good for you. And yes its about 90% female, but of course I was only there for exercise. ;) The other good thing is once you learn it you can do bits at home, I am quite slack at doing this but just 10 minutes per day can make a difference.

theorox - December 30, 2011 03:46 PM (GMT)
I'll probably start training in the new year, too. Well, hopefully at least. I have a classmate who goes to the gym and he's pretty dam buff, I can maybe go with him. :)

I don't need to loose weight, I need to gain weight. I'm really skinny! About 47-48 kilos and over 180cm...the BMI just doesn't look very good for a 16-year old guy, even a slim one. :P

Theo

Goofycabal - January 2, 2012 03:03 AM (GMT)
One thing to keep in mind about the BMI, Theo, is that it's a little off whack. My dad, for example, is classed as almost 'obese' by BMI standards. That is, he's 5'7" and 187 pounds. But that's like 90% muscle mass and 10% body fat we're talking...

Anyways, one of my 'weight loss fallacies' pet peeves aside, today's been a mostly arms and back workout for me. Learnt a new trick that makes the muscles think they're being smart too. Do a bunch of a reps on a weight you're comfortable with (like 15-20 reps). Then, bump it up a bit (5-10kgs for eg). Do like 3 or 4 of this weight which feels like too much. THEN add another 5kgs and do 3 reps of this weight.

Take the 5kgs off again, and all of a sudden you can do 10 or so reps of the other 'too heavy' weight :D Silly muscles think they're getting an easy ride ^_^

Anyways, lesson #2 from today: Doing training focusing on arms and shoulders = good idea.
Hanging out an entire washing machine of laundry immediately after said training = bad idea.

I'll be getting some measurements taken this week to keep track of to...

BorkBork - January 2, 2012 08:45 AM (GMT)
Here is an other one who needs to loose weight/gets in better shape.

Since i have quit (field) hockey i turned into a kilo magnet, but with everything new i try old hockey injuries (back, knee, ankle, hamstring) play up almost instantly (that is what made me quit hockey in the first place).

Work isn't helping either. Fieldwork usually makes me lose a kilo, but it also cranks up you appetite....which makes sure that that lost kilo comes back 4 times once you are back in the office.

Goofycabal - January 2, 2012 10:27 AM (GMT)
Alright guys and gals, who would be interested in turning this into a proper 'all inclusive' group-run exercise blog?

Raise your hand below, and we'll take a look at kicking this off right for everyone involved!

Borzag - January 2, 2012 10:48 AM (GMT)
Ooh, ooh, pick me Coach!!! Pick me!!!

:D

WarbossKurgan - January 2, 2012 11:15 AM (GMT)
I'm up for that. :ph43r:

Snikpik - January 2, 2012 09:18 PM (GMT)
I'll be up fpr that.

Incidently when concerning the BMI ratio Goofy is right when it comes to some people. I'm a nurse and we dont often refer to the BMI these days, at least not in my area of work. However for under weight people in can be a very useful indicator that they need to put more on. Over weight, it gets a little more tricky as it doesnt take in to considration, as Goofy says, muscle that weighs more than fat.

Da Git - January 2, 2012 11:05 PM (GMT)
I'm in!

As Kurgan I'm a Taekwon-Do black belt, but since I got said belt I have gained too many kilos. As it is most of my martial arts time is taken up by instructing kids and youths, so for much of my "physical acitivity" time I'm not really that active.

Since I just got back from the Holidays I already thought about signing up on the local gym tomorrow. I'll do running and rowing, and possibly some weights (though my shoulders aren't too happy about them). If I manage to push myself to it I can sign up for boxing class, and possilby yoga as well. I've done yoga a few times before, but that was somewhat because of a girl.

About BMI: When I got my black belt I was in pretty good shape. My BMI told me that I was overweight (not much, but still)...

Goofycabal - January 3, 2012 08:20 AM (GMT)
Sounds like a plan then.

I'll update the first post of this thread then, to make it all-inclusive for those who want to join in and keep track of their fitness as a group :D

If you want to go into such details, make a post now to mention your current shape (ie weight, body measurements [if you want to go into this level of detail - ie things like waistline, arm size etc]), plus any desired goal (again: measurements, weight etc). I'll add your name and a link to that post in the first post here so it'll be easy to refer back to.

Where you feel the need, make sure to keep us all updated on your current situation from time to time too, so we can see that we're all getting fitter :D

Da Git - January 3, 2012 03:58 PM (GMT)
At the moment I am probably between 95 and 100 kilos (I don't have means to be more exact at the moment). I want to be between 80 and 85, since my bad knee can't handle my current weight.

BorkBork - January 3, 2012 08:59 PM (GMT)
i dont dare to stand on the scales to be honest so close after christmas and newyears.

But for a medical check up in november (with some surpricingly decent results btw) i was 117 kg.

at 1.84m

I should really be getting back to around 100. The last time i was top fit i was between 90-95 kgs (roughly 9 years ago).

Goomb - January 4, 2012 06:26 PM (GMT)
Ha ha ha! All of us gamers and hobbyists probably need to lose some weight and get fit for the coming year. Not all of us can be slim and trim like Draig or Veegeegee.....

I am "in" for this Goofs. Those of you who have friended me on FB have seen me rumble about vision and goals over the past couple days. My ultimate goal is to take 80 pounds off this year, so I am starting to move it. I got some new running shoes on Monday, and workouts have begun.

I am pushing to be up by 5:15 AM and hitting the gym for either weight training or cardio six days a week. Although we were exhausted, my wife and I hit the gym yesterday for cardio, and I did weight training (abs and legs) today. I also started Weight Watcher weekly meetings and online tools last night, so I am deadly serious about taking this off and keeping it off.

That's quite true indeed ^_^

Especially since a lot of us tend to sit around in front of computers for a large chunk of time too :P

Anyways, I've updated the first post with details for yourself, Borkbork and Da Git :)

raivenblade - January 5, 2012 09:43 AM (GMT)
this morning I did 3 deep breaths and a push-up, can you believe it?

Snikpik - January 5, 2012 11:33 AM (GMT)
lol. Push ups can be difficult if you dont have much core strength or havent been through army boot camp.

BorkBork - January 5, 2012 12:55 PM (GMT)
Or used to have a former Marine as Hockey trainer :)

Dispite my weight i still manage allright in the push-up department (and no! am not talking about a bra).

@Goofy....I will donate every kilo i lose to you! 65 kg??? You need to start eating more burgers!

Borzag - January 5, 2012 02:56 PM (GMT)
Okay, minor fail on my part; wasn't feeling great so no measurements from me just yet.

HOWEVER! I did set myself some goals for the coming year at NYE, and made sure they were measurable:
  • Drop to 75kg
  • 15 x continuous 60% body weight chest presses (current: 3)
  • 5 x full chin-ups (current: 0)

I had a PT session tonight, and he's agreed that all of the above are doable, although the chin-ups will require the whole damn year as it's not easy. Anyway, my diet's been adjusted and I'll do a formal weigh-in next thursday night if not before. Actual measurements can wait until tomorrow night or satrday.

Mostyn - January 5, 2012 08:07 PM (GMT)
There’s nothing like a bit of New Year fitness optimism so if you don’t mind I’ll join in too Goofy.

I’m not too worried about weight per se, although I’ve put on a couple of kilos over Christmas, but it’ll certainly be interesting to see if any measurements change as I get into the regime.

Aims are (following Borzag’s output focussed targets)

Run 10 miles in 1 hour 10mins. (I’ve signed up for the Great South Run in October so I’m going to use that as the measure)
Achieve sub 17:40 for 5000m on the rowing machine . (Just wheezed my way to 18:40 in a first post Christmas row so a bit of a way to go). Aim is again to get down to this sort of time by October.

I’ve got a full fitness assessment next week so I’ll be in a position to bore you all with such irrelevant factoids as Dry Lean Weight, but until then:

Current Stats are Weight 96kg (Ouch – 15st and a bit, it definitely sounds more in old money), Height 192 cm (About 6' 3"), Waist 34”. Which now depressingly puts me in the ‘bad’ category for BMI. As I said, I don’t care too much about the weight but I imagine to achieve the running time I’ll probably need to shed about 5Kg. Which I’m optimistically assuming will just happen as I train…..

I think I’ve just depressed myself writing this, but best of luck to everyone.

Snikpik - January 5, 2012 08:43 PM (GMT)
Sadly me and my partner both work 12 hour shifts and have to work opposite other. As we have kids I am not getting enough sessions in every week. I might opt to join the new gym in town that is 24 hours. The draw backs are no staff to guide and monitor me nor a swimming pool. I dont even know if they have showers to be honest but it looks massive (for a gym in the UK atleast).

Mostyn - January 6, 2012 08:19 AM (GMT)
Snikpik, I feel your pain. I love my children to bits but they are singlehandedly destroying my health and sanity! I've lost track of the times I've done exercise, DIY or hobby stuff either ridiculously late or at stupidly early times of the day, normally exhausted from a day of being used as a human punchbag (both at work and at home  ).

There's a great Historical Wargames Blog called 'Painting After Dark' which I think aptly describes the affect families and work have on us all.

Kera Foehunter - January 6, 2012 10:32 AM (GMT)
Yea i think i gain a pound or two over the holidays
I'm up to 117 pounds
but once i get back to my proper eating habits.. i should lose throw few odd pounds

theorox - January 6, 2012 01:35 PM (GMT)
A random weight converter on the internet says I weigh about 106 pounds. That's pitiful for a 16-year old who's over 180cm tall...(Maybe Kera is right...maybe I am shorter than her!! :o)

Theo

BorkBork - January 6, 2012 07:02 PM (GMT)

I think we need to re-route some of the food-aid for Africa to Sweden ;)

I just weighed myself - I'm now 12 stone and half a pound (168.5lbs, 76.4kg). Damnit!

You need to live with me Honey , I can fatten up the best..

Heck Bork bork Gain 7 pounds just talking to me

Da Git - January 7, 2012 11:24 PM (GMT)
Oh, Kera! You're so sweet we gain weight just by having you in this thread. :P

Back to topic: I haven't gained weight during the holiday! :o

It's just the year-and-a-half before it that is my problem... Three years ago I weighed in at under 80 kilos, but then I was hospitalized. :cheese:

This week I have started going to the gym (twice so far). I do a mix of running, cycling and rowing, and varied strength training. My body can't handle too much of one thing, except from martial arts, which it is used to do a lot of. :ph43r:

Actually, that's not far from a truth!

Not the truth, mind, but some years ago I tore off my anterior cruciate ligament. The following three months I sat still and gained weight. After that however I managed to take off a kilo (about 2 pounds) a week while I also built muscles. That really helped me get well after knee surgery.

This time it's just that I was quite fit a while back, and then I finished one of my main goals, and subsequently got less focused on training. And I had a bunch of muscles which is the reason I weigh quite a lot for one of my height, while still being more fit than most of my friends...
