Title: Yellow Gobbos Of The Blue Moon
Description: Another squig horde!
Flogger - March 22, 2011 07:03 PM (GMT)
Hey guys!
I've been playing Goblins now for about a year and since 8th edition I've done surprisingly well with them in two tournaments here in Sweden. Never won or so but I've done all right. Won 4 out of 5 games at a team tournament (then our skaven team member lost all of his horribly and we placed second last in the tournament) but I'm happy to say it wasn't on my behalf that we lost =)
Then in a singles tournament in january I actually "cheated" on my goblins and brought an orc on wyvern (goblin model though, just played him as an orc). I also brought 2 giants. I placed 9 out of 20 which was okay as I did get a prize for the "friendliest/nicest list" =)
Now at Easter I'll be taking 2k of my Goblins to another tournament and of course I want it to be completely finished by then! This will be my first tournament with the new army book (which I'm completely in love with btw) so it'll be great fun!
My goblins have been (less than) table top style for a long time, I was in a rush before a team tournament in September and just painted things 3-colours on different places just to make the units look like they were painted.
The entire army is yellow and I do prefer to play Night Goblins and not regular common ones, except the warboss, I need that Ld8! The only model which is 100% finished is my Night Goblin Great Shaman, and even he doesn't have a base yet. The entire army is based on rocks instead of just grey sand so it does take bit of time making all the bases, I still have to make another round of them for my second Squig Horde.
I use Army Painters Strong Tone Quickshade (dip) for this army, it works wonders. I'm not looking to get best painted but the army IMO will look great once it get's dipped and then a spray of anti-shine.
I can't just ramble on like this without giving you at least one pic, here's the finished great shaman, he still needs an anti-shine spray but I'll do the entire army when it's all done:

I'm currently working on the Warboss and hopefully have him done by tonight =)
Cheerio!
Thitanium Prince - March 22, 2011 07:41 PM (GMT)
A nice example of the clever use of dipping :D waiting for other models ;)
dublindawg - March 22, 2011 08:41 PM (GMT)
Is that a banana on his head or is he just happy :D j/k looks great, let see more pics once you have everything dipped.
Flogger - March 22, 2011 09:14 PM (GMT)
Thanks guys!
It's kinda nice to have a blog I just realised, that way I need to keep my painting going!
Goblin Warboss is done, I'll have time to finish the Night Goblin Warboss as well and then dip them both before going to bed =)
Jellywarrior - March 23, 2011 12:47 AM (GMT)
Lovely yellow! A fine example of what dipping can do, and normally, I don't like dipping, very nicely done sir!
Flogger - March 23, 2011 01:12 AM (GMT)
Cheers Jellywarrior!
The yellow does make a very nice conrast to the rock bases I use.
Both Warbosses are done and were just dipped so 'll try to get some pics of them tomorrow, and the shaman as well again but on his new base this time =)
Snikpik - March 23, 2011 08:20 AM (GMT)
People comment that I use bright colours on my army, yours are even brighter, but I like it a lot. Inidently I dont agree that my army is that bright.
Flogger - March 23, 2011 10:23 AM (GMT)
Cheers Snikpik! I've had a look at your army as well and I did like it a lot! When I decided on dipping my army I looked through to see if I found an army that was dipped and I think yours was the only one. But hey, now we're two ;)
Flogger - March 23, 2011 12:10 PM (GMT)
Night Goblin Great Shaman, Goblin Warboss and Night Goblin Warboss. Bases need a little more work but other than that they're done =)

I will bring my massive camera home from work some day and photograph everything "studio-style" when it's done, until then, these crappy phone-photos is all you get ;)
Flogger - March 23, 2011 06:31 PM (GMT)
Wyvern WIP, the rider needs some more painting and the "leash" will also be made so it goes around the wyverns left horn.
The coming Mangler Squig and in the middle my tiny little Battle Standard =)
dublindawg - March 23, 2011 06:44 PM (GMT)
Looking good! Are these after the anti-shine or is that the last step for them? That is one huge Squig, where did you get him from??
Flogger - March 23, 2011 07:13 PM (GMT)
Thanks!
Nothing has been sprayed with anti-shine yet , I'll probably spray it all at the same time when it's all done.
The squig is from Forgeworld, it's from 2001 I think. Got mine on ebay, there's one there currently as well, it's about £60-80 somewhere. I cut his base off though and put a needle through the new round resin base that I bought originally for 40k dreadnoughts but hey, mangler squigs are cooler! Then drilled a hole in the squig so the model is held firmly in place by the needle. His foot will also be touching the base so extra support from there as well.
Here's what's to be painted within the next week or so:

A unit filler for the Night Gobbos! Here you can easily see the difference between not dipped and dipped. The netter isn't glued on nor finished but just looking at the yellow you get the idea. The large rock needs a little more work, especially the little shrooms on and under the rock =)
Craze_b0i - March 24, 2011 12:08 AM (GMT)
Wow nice colour scheme. Look forward to see the rest. :)
I recognise the old shaman-wyvern there, what mini is that one you used for the rider?
Anton - March 24, 2011 05:01 AM (GMT)
Those are good colours indeed. I'm personally not a fan of dipping but you've done it well.
Are you going to add anything else to the bases? I think another colour on them would make them more interesting. The shrooms on the filler are good but I suspect you don't have hundreds of them. Maybe some kind of moss or lichen?
Flogger - March 24, 2011 10:02 AM (GMT)
Cheers guys!
The rider on the Wyvern is a gamezone "wolf rider hero" that I got to be a suicide wolf hero in 7th edition. Now he's an "orc", really got promoted :)
I've been thinking the same thing Anton, I was considering snow actually, my new gaming table will be black/grey and lots of rocky terrain (goblins vs dwarf style) so snow might do the trick. What do you think?
Nearly finished the BSB yesterday so will probably gave pics of him up tomorrow or today even.
Anton - March 24, 2011 11:14 AM (GMT)
I would go with something green I think, snow is nice but the bases are already all shades of grey so you wouldn't get much contrast.

That might work, perhaps some kind of moss or something. But how best to do such a thing?
Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull - March 24, 2011 06:01 PM (GMT)
Hi mate,
the gobbos look good so far, keep up the good work.
Cheers,
G

Have a look through Antenociti's Workshop and see if you find something you like.
Clump foliage for example.
Flogger - March 27, 2011 07:40 PM (GMT)
Started working on my handlers! Night Gobbos with additional hand weapons FTW! :D
Threw in a musician and a netter as well, they work as handlers. Hopefully I'll finish these tonight and have them dipped by tomorrow. Then it's time for squigs! 30 of those to finish, they're painted but need some detailing and highlighting, made from horrors btw :)

Oh yeah, unit filler and BSB are finished, just need to dip them and then I'll get pics up. The BSB is smaller than his moon banner
Flogger - April 20, 2011 01:52 PM (GMT)
I've gotten a lot of painting done and the army is nearly finished! Of course I won't be able to upload anything until May 1st when my internet goes fast again.
Until then, I magnetized my squig horde, is there any reason in the world not to use magnets for ALL units? It's just soooo convenient! =D

Tournament starts on friday, I'm bringing:
Goblin Warboss
Night Goblin Great Shaman
Night Goblin Warboss
Night Goblin BSB
Night Goblin Big Boss x2
39 Night Gobbos x2
20 Night Gobbos
5 Wolf Riders
Wolf Chariot x3 (seperate units)
30/10 Squig Horde
Troll x2 (seperate units)
Doom Diver x2
Mangler Squig
2000 points with the ETC restrictions, I really would have wanted my second squig horde in there but that will have to wait until next time, haven't started on it yet.
Wish me luck!
Rog - April 20, 2011 02:00 PM (GMT)
How many fanatics are you taking all in all?
Flogger - April 20, 2011 05:21 PM (GMT)
I'll be taking 3.
At 2400 I'm not taking any at all though, they just don't do enough in a pure goblin list. I can only see them being 100% effective with hand of gork.
Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull - April 20, 2011 07:53 PM (GMT)
Good looking stuff Flogger, the list seems solid to. a bit small but it can work I guess.
Cheers,
G
Flogger - April 21, 2011 01:27 PM (GMT)
Cheers mate!
The army is looking soooo much better now that everything is dipped and done. Just a spray of anti-shine and finish the mangler and trolls tonight. Pics will come!
You think the army is small? 160 models at 2k seems alright to me, at 2,4k it'll be about 230 =)
Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull - April 21, 2011 06:11 PM (GMT)
I didn't spot those 2 units of 39. I tought it was only one unit. My bad.
Cheers,
G
Flogger - April 26, 2011 11:14 AM (GMT)
I placed 41st in the tournament out of 50 so horrible horrible result from my part! But a few bad decisions from me led to a few losses.
I did win first place in Sportsmanship though =)
A pic of the almost ready army, will be adding more and better pics as soon as I can.

I still have to paint another 30 squigs and 10 handlers and 8 trolls to upgrade the army to 2400p for another tourney at the beginning of June :)
Zaaagh! da big boss - April 26, 2011 05:03 PM (GMT)
HOW DID YOU DO THOSE SQUIGS?????
Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull - April 26, 2011 05:37 PM (GMT)
Nice goblin army you have there, I'm looking forward to more updates.
Cheers,
G

Haha, horrors mate ;) Another 30 to go though, 21 gnarly squigs and then an old citadel scorpion as a unit filler taking up 9 spots.
Thanks Gazhkull! More updates will come soon, currently working on 3 mushroom things to use as common trolls and 6 stone trolls :)
Rog - April 26, 2011 10:54 PM (GMT)
Thinking of taking or making squig hoppers, incidentaly?
Flogger - April 27, 2011 07:46 AM (GMT)
I have 6 hoppers of the 5th edition style, not finished yet but I don't intend to finish them anytime soon. I have no reason for using them, they cost way too much and die VS elves, rats, beasts and so on.. I do love the models, I usually use them as "night gobbo big boss with great weapon", counting the squig as a GW :)
Rog - April 27, 2011 12:35 PM (GMT)
How about unit fillers? It's just a bit weird to see such a nice fluffed up army without any hoppers.

That's true, they might become unit fillers.
I am thinking about using them in the future with a great cave squig boss but so far I just haven't had points for it :)
Flogger - May 3, 2011 07:19 PM (GMT)
Well lookie lookie I got a SQUIG HORDE! :yarr!:
This was in my mailbox when I came home today: ¨

And thus began the work of the second squig horde in the 2400p army..

The old citadel scorpion is going to look great as a unit filler and centrepiece of the unit =)
Craze_b0i - May 4, 2011 12:39 AM (GMT)
Ooh I have that old scorpion. Not as cool as the Gamezone ones, but yeh should make a nice filler.
:)
*Edit meant Reaper, not Gamezone.
Flogger - May 4, 2011 07:55 AM (GMT)
Reaper do make some nice stuff. I love this unit though as it will just be totally oldschool, except for the handlers :)
Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull - May 4, 2011 05:25 PM (GMT)
That looks like a promising unit flogger, I'm looking forward to it.
Cheers,
G
Flogger - May 16, 2011 08:16 AM (GMT)
Undercoated squigs:

Basecoated squigs:

Currently they are all highlighted and I've painted the teeth and horns on 9 of them so almost half-done. The entire unit is to be done next sunday when me and my friend are having a dipping-night. Then I only have two rock lobbas to finish and the army is done for the next tournament! :)
Flogger - May 18, 2011 09:37 PM (GMT)
Now that's a living room!

Now THAT is a painting station!

And THIS is a Squig Horde!

The squigs aren't completely finished yet, the green is going to be washed and then they're all going to be dipped so they get some shading. Currently they're just highlighted with blazing orange over solar macharius orange.
What do you guys think about the green scorpion stinger? Is it too much?
