Title: Civ 5
Description: Good bye free time!
Groznit Goregut - October 10, 2010 01:22 AM (GMT)
Well Gits, I just got Sid Meier's Civilization 5 in the mail for my birthday. There goes any free time I was expecting. There goes my New Year's Resolution of finishing those goblins. I'm not too sad about it, though.
I LOVE this game series! I've been playing it since the first one came out in the.....late 80's or perhaps early 90's? High School or college...I'm not sure which.
This is always in everyone's top 10 video games of all time. I'm sure the new one will ROCK!
They finally got the Ottomans in the game! Only one of the longest lived empires of all times...
Anyone else try Civ 5?

You will have to give us a full report when you come up for air in a month or so. I loved 3, but 4 didn't do a lot for me. The added elements seemed to bog the game down a bit for me.

Is it like Age of Empires? I do like that.
And hey Jim, don't get all caught up in it, okay? ;)

I love those type of games, but I am really rubbish at them. I always end of castling up and then getting swarmed by the enemy (kind of like in warhammer) Just purchased Tom Clancy's End Wars so I am looking forward to playing that
EDIT: After 10 mins of playing the game I can say it's awesome

OK....Age of Empires is the cheap knock off that Microsoft built to kind of compete with Civilization. Age of Empires is one of those crummy Real Time Strategy games. I hate those. Hate them. Did I mention that I hate them? I'm an Old Skool wargammer and I like my Turn Based Strategy games.
Also, the Civ series has been out and still going strong ages before AoE started their thing.
Well, Kera, soon I will be laid up on the sofa after my surgery with my foot in the air, on a lot of pain killers, and really not in any mood to eat. So, I figure I will be playing a lot of Civ 5, but I don't think I will explode with the weight. After the last surgery, I lost about 15 pounds! The crutches also helps with the cardio exercise.
Now....as for the game, I am quite pleased with it. Things are still the same old game, but there are additions. For one, there are city-states now. They don't expand and won't ever win, but you can enter into diplomacy with them and/or conquer them. It's a pretty cool idea. Barbarians are all over the place and important to find their camps and clear them out. Cities have their own defense these days and you don't have to have defenders baby-sitting units. No longer can that one little barbarian horde slip through and capture your capital because you left it undefended. That part is brilliant.
I like the ranged combat aspect. Still, I haven't been on the offensive against another city and believe it will be hard. Perhaps siege weapons are needed?
Diplomacy has gotten more intricate and there are a lot more options. Telling people to quit settling on your border is pretty cool, though they say the same about you. Ghandi is getting pretty uppity about that, but he's a pacifist! My pikemen will defeat his warrior hordes.
So far I really like the game. I'm having a lot of fun with it.

AoE is a bit of a simplification, right? Think i'll have to look into Civilization. But i gotta tell you, AoE3 is pretty damn good. ;)
I mostly play CSS nowadays anyway, and a bit of DoDS occasionally.

Age of empires is a Real time strategy game,
CiV is a turn based game, it is a big difference.
I only have CiV3 and it is addicting, but I never seem to get to the nuclear age to get a bombs
Cheers,

Oh, I'm going for my 3rd ankle surgery. I fell off a ladder 3 years ago and my foot was at a 90 degree angle. So, I did the whole ambulance and surgery and cast and crutches and months of grueling "physical therapy" (socially positive occupation for sadists, really).
Next cold season, my foot still hurt. It turns that I got trauma arthritis. I did shots and a foot brace, but it still hurt. So, I elected to have my ankle fused. I can still move it up and down, but not side to side. Stopping it from moving is to stop the pain. So, I did the surgery and cast and crutches, etc., etc.
It turns out that it still hurts. They didn't fuse it enough. So, I am going to have a third surgery where they "re-fuse" my ankle. Something about a bone graft and pain and worse surgery and hospital and crutches and all that again. I'm going to be laid up for months....
I guess you can say I'm screwed! (they used giant screws to fuse my ankle) :P

Oh, that! I knew you had ankle surgery, but Kera outwitted me!
Anyway, good luck with that and if they don't do it properly this time they will come home to a house smashed and re-built to a great green-glowing effigy! :yarr!:
Months huh? Well at least you will be a Civilization master! Hope you get well soon and they don't steal your foot at the hospital or something.
Good luck and don't go bungyjumping before the surgery!
Also, HAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAAAA!!! HEEEHHEE!! HOHOHHIHIHIHIHII!! Screwed! :P
