Got tips and strategies that work well against the Dwarfs? Share them here with other warlords! Since the release of the new 8th edition, the game has changed a great deal and new tactics must be developed and discussed in order for da greenskins to crump ‘em good!

Hord of Squigs are a big help; maybe a few.

Smash up the organ guns with stone throwers organ guns make a mess of low T NG, then go onto the anvil as I believe it can be harmed by a S9.
Doom diver into some warriors etc.
Chariots and wolves into the thunderers/quarellers if on the flanks, send enough and some will get through.
NG with Fanatics and Squig herds into the fighty stuff, hopefully backed up by Chariots
Giant or trolls to get shot by cannons and if they survive can help out.
Minimum number of shamen as you will only get spells off as irresistable force.
Characters in units or on mounts such as GC Squig etc and tool them up with things that increase strength or minimise armour saves, my fave is increase strength as it will also decrease their saves.
I got caught out by 2 units of Rangers starting 12" away and then getting charged in via the anvil on turn 1, think it is legal, took out 2 chariots and over ran into a S Chucker and a S Thrower. Dint work next game though.
Move forward and start the cooking fires as the Dwarfs will be toast.
Def move forward as I nearly had a unit of miners come up 8" from 3 units of NG who had failed Animosity and stayed near my deployment zone. 9 Fanatics released would not have been a good day.

Ahh Dwarves (Dwarfs?) What a proppa good match up.

First and foremost, they literally hate us. Be wary, as this does mean that they'll have quite a bit of an extra punch in the first round, especially the units with Great Weapons.

The Dwarfs have an easy big 3 in terms of threats, 2 of which aren't too hard to deal with.

1. Grudge Throwers and Cannons
2. Hammerers
3. Ranger Quarellers

Grudge Throwers and Cannons are the devil. While Empire can field more machines, as a Dwarf player I can assure you that the stunty warmachines hold a special place of hate in the hearts of non-dwarf players. S5 Stone Throwers and Cannons that are pretty much guaranteed to fire every turn is not fun, at all. Your best bet here is to use Scouts and Spear Chukkas. The Dwarf player will spend most of his time blasting your infantry to unit sizes he's more comfortable with, and robbing him of that advantage is huge. Dwarf units are tough, but they're not implacable, much as they'd have you believe. But if your Boyz are at half strength or less, then they'll gladly charge forward.

Hammerers aren't scary on their own. Yeah, S6 with re-rolls to hit on the first round is never fun, but they only sport a 5+. Rok Lobbas and Fanatics can deal with that. Your main concern surviving against them. Like most dwarf units, they won't flee, and even if you can put the hurt out on them, more often than not they'll be more than willing to dish out the sweet pain of S6 on your troops. Your best solution is to weaken them, then send in Savage Orcs with their Wards and Frenzy to beat 'em to shreds. Hammers specialize in hurting things and staying in combat, but not necessarily survival.

Ranger Quarrellers stink to face. S4 weapons with 36" are painful, and while they may not hit all the time, facing 30 Great Weapon hits isn't fun either. With their ability to scout, they can present a huge liability to your army if you let them run amok. Your best bet is to simply deal with them early on, usually weakening them with shooting before moving in. Luckily for you, the Dwarf player usually pays a premium for this unit, and so killing them can be an easy way to put yourself in a good position.

In general, you need to soften up the Dwarf units before they can hurt you with their great weapons, which seem to be the major trend amongst Dwarf players. Try to take out their Grudge Throwers and use scouts to annoy and disrupt their plans. Stunties are tough, but with some good old kunnin' you can crack some skulls and shave some beards before day's end.

Good guide! Thanks for the write up. I haven't faced Dwarfs lately, so it's a good refresher.

Ahh Dwarves (Dwarfs?) What a proppa good match up.

First and foremost, they literally hate us! How great is that? You can force them to pursue weak Gobbo units so your Boyz can get 'em good.

sorry mate,

No forced persuit for hatred anymore in 8th.

Ahh cripe.

Well, so much for that. Might as well edit it out.
