I think it looks fantastic.
It could just be the models but the style you painted them reminds me of orcs in very old editions of warhammer or (dare I say it) Dungeons & Dragons. A time when fantasy orcs were more mythical and less cartoon-like. Would love to see a whole army of these.
:)

I love both models, either style would work, I would say that it depends on if most of your models have armour or are mostly skin, because the style of the one on the left (my favourite) looks better for armoured and more heavy looking orcs but the one on the right looks better for more savagish orcs, mainly because there is less fidly and more luxury like details...

Thanks for the answers.
Well the 2 orcs are both gonna work as regular orcs. The level of armour is very different from model to model on the ones i intend to use as boys (the ones painted until now represent the the most armoured and the least armoured) and i figured this would work as the average orc being lightly armoured ;)
The miniatures are from Ral Partha, and their sortiment already include models working as savages and black orcs. I will paint one or two of each this weekend and upload the results.
An overall question: Do you think the colorchoice is too light or maybe to dark? I aimed for some natural colors, but is it to much, or is should it have even more Brown, grey, and green colours?
Zaaagh! da big boss - April 29, 2010 04:46 PM (GMT)
the colours are perfect like this, its not to dark nor to light
Morten C - May 3, 2010 11:28 PM (GMT)
And we're back with more exclusive pictures. This time i was a little quick on the boys bases. Apologies, It will be corrected.
The models completely painted so far (from left to right: 2 trolls. blackorc, savage orc big'un, 2 orc boys):

Some closeups.
Black orc and Savage big'un:

Thinking that i might wan't to make the next black orcs darker?
And... Trolls :yarr!:

I will be working on some *Glosh*-effect on the blood and vomit, so it won't be looking so painted, but more like... well... blood and vomit.
Next up is goblins in all their shapes: warriors, wolfriders, squighoppers etc.
stay tuned.
As always, comments are more than welcome.

this is going to be such a characterfull army!!
i like to see more

..Very fine figures and very fine painted army so far (BTW are the trolls Gamezone?).
I wouldn't mind if the black orcs stay this colour. The story goes black orcs aren't called so for nothing but who cares? As long as you like them yourself. They are distinguishable enough from the normal boyz.
cheers,
Kees

Thanks to both of you for the nice words. And yes the trolls are from gamezone. They aren't the regular trolls though, but converted chaos trolls. I bought both types, so that i could form a unit of 8 incl. GW's common trolls.
I Believe i will make the colors a bit darker on the next blackorcs. Not the skin, but it's the blue color i find a bit too shiny.
But i probably won't be painting more blackorcs before i have painted some wolf riders, and regular goblins.
maybe i will even have time for it tonight...

Nice Morten! Good miniatures too! Like the skintone as well.
And hey, that orc that you call "most armoured" should be a boss. :)

Thnx.
I actually planned to be making the "most armoured" a boss, but unfortunately he's to tiny compared to the black orcs. So i found a quite fitting model instead. It will be my next orc model to paint. I think you will like it ;)
EDIT:
Oh year by the way, i'm still in need of some ideas for cool Bigboss and Warboss models. I've considered this one:

But i'm afraid it will be quite hard seperating the head, as i don't think it fits...
This one might work to... or at least as a big boss:

Anybody got some ideas? Reaper miniatures have a few models that might work, but i would like them to be specially cool, so i won't be hasty and be the nextbest thing ;) Ideas for models that could be converted to an orc is fine to. As long as the model fits the style. All input is appreciated!
Morten C - May 5, 2010 08:59 PM (GMT)
Arh, screw patience!
Just ordered both models, an additional command group and a shaman. But since i'm from Denmark, i expect there to be a couple of months before they arrive ;)
EDIT: Ideas for character models are still very welcome!

yeahr i thought about that one, but i don't think he looks feral enough ;)
The old GW black orc from ebay is a good idea though. But why couldn't he have taken a descent picture?
Morten C - May 14, 2010 11:07 AM (GMT)
Wohaa, just received my reaper miniatures. Fast delivery i must say.
Screw goblins then, i will be painting the front rank of my boys unit today, and upload pictures later.
Here's a list of the things i need to get painted:
- 25 boyz
- 20 black orcs
- 20 savages
- 40 goblins
- 40 wolf(varg) riders
- 14 squig hoppers
- 1 doom diver
- 4 chukkas
- 2 rock lobbas
- 1 chariot
- 1 giant
- bases on 6 remaing trolls.
Heroes:
- 1 Orc warboss
- 3 Orc Big bosses
- 1 Orc Shaman
So much to do, so little time
But, first rank or two of the boys will be finished this weekend.
theorox - May 14, 2010 02:44 PM (GMT)
Will all models be in the same style as the models you have shown us already? i hope so, but in that case how will you do the Doomdiver?
Theo :yarr!:
Morten C - May 14, 2010 09:01 PM (GMT)
Yep. All the orcs are from ral partha, accept for some characters/commands which are from reaper.
For goblins, i'm using goblins and orcs from GWs LOTR. They blend quite nice. my biggest problem is to find boarboys and boars. Ral partha already makes nice riders, but the mounts are too large and doesn't fit.
As for trolls, as shown, i use Gamezone trolls.
EDIT: Oh and about the doom diver. I've fixed the machine and crew, but i haven't figured out how to make the suicide goblin, as i don't want him to look goofy, but it's kindda hard, as the principle of the machine is craziness incarnate
Morten C - May 15, 2010 02:08 AM (GMT)
So the promised update.
first rank of the first unit of boys is completed. All in all those five models have been taking about 8 - 10 hours of work. I always tend to put more work into the highlights and details on the front rank, than in the rest of the unit. (to bad it doesn't show to well on the camera)
It should be possible to paint the rest of the unit relatively quick from now on.
Sorry that the quality of the pictures isn't better, but i didn't have a good light source at my disposal. It won't happen again ;)
The boss:

The musician:

The standard bearer:

The final boy:

Thanks.
Well i sold my old O&G army, to afford it. I sold it cheap, but the ral partha minatures too is very cheap (considered they are highly detailed metal models) and, if bought in packs of 6, they only cost 1.3£ each.
So far i haven't considered it a bad deal. but then again, my other O&G army might have been 3000-4000pts, but it was still young and largely unpainted ;)
The painting has always been a problem to me, as i tend to run out of motivation rather quickly, when the models seem uniform. So for me, it's a great deal that all of the troops are varied, detailed and exciting to paint. It just takes a fair amount of time to paint

Looking really good! Can't wait to see more! Those are some really cool models, as much as I love many GW sculpts there are so many that I really don't, so it's nice to see something completely different. I just finished painting that squiq hopper with his ass showing, ugh, what a horrible model. I love the squigs but the gobbos (both with the hoppers and hunter) are awful.
Keep up the good work!

I agree, the old metal NG's are awful. UUU-Ouhhghggghh-awful. The squiggly squigs are okay though.
Some guy on warseer (i think) has stepped up and said that he have seen plastic squigherds in the making, so we can hope that they are awesome!
@Topic.
Very nice painting Morten, and i like the mossy bases!
But seriously, 8-10 hours for 5 models? Crazy! I could never do that! <_<
Keep it up!

Awsome looking orcs mate. I agree with what other people have said. The models themselves look great.

ahh... just finished the second rank of the boys.
They may lack i slight bit in detail compared to the front row, but that is to be expected. On the other hand I've used nearly 5 hours completely painting and flocking these 5 models, so the average painting speed has definitely increased. Which is nice, as it makes it seam possible to have a army ready for when 8th edition hit the streets :)
I'll upload photos tomorrow.

Morten C - May 22, 2010 07:59 PM (GMT)
well thanks for the fine words boys, Always nice knowing people appreciate the pictures ;)
Actually i'm growing a bit tired of painting boys, as the front rank is always the funniest to paint, knowing you can allow yourself to pay attention to every detail.
So i was wondering if there was something in particular you would like to see painted next.
What I've got to choose between is:
- Savages (easy painting as not much clothes)
- Black orcs (quite a lot of details. beautiful minis)
- more trolls (only needing base and blood fixes, these are a quicky)
- Wolf riders (looking forwar to getting started on these guys)
- Goblins (Standard orc and goblins from LOTR
- warmachines (a lot of work in a few models, but i think they will turn out nicely)
BorkBork - May 22, 2010 08:21 PM (GMT)
I like the fat boss
He looks a bit Roman (which is good) and still orcy enough to be an orc.
And what brand is he? could not find him on either the ral partha or reaper site?
oh...and i would like to see the goblins next :)
Zaaagh! da big boss - May 23, 2010 12:08 PM (GMT)
i want to see the savages actually, they paint fast, so you can start on the goblins, everybody happy :yarr!:
Wazoo - May 24, 2010 12:52 PM (GMT)
Wow, that is cool! I really like that boss! Your models are making me consider using normal orc boyz, using alternative models of course.

Oh i hate it when i haven't got time to paint my minis, but finally time presents itself! :yarr!:
Looking like i can finish my project tomorrow, and i will have some time to paint Thursday and Friday before i have to prepare for an examen.
Depending on the time the list is as follows:
- Thursday: Orc shaman
- Friday: Savage orcs and wolf riders.
Uh and i just ordered new brushes and washes. Riming and all, this is bound to be good :D
hmm... after my examen i'll have to start on the war machines. Really looking forward to paint a lobber B)
Morten C - June 6, 2010 10:50 AM (GMT)
Ahoy fellow gits.
The productive days up till weekend wasn't as productive as i had hoped for  Therefore the only thing I've gotten started on is my orc shaman. he's a work in progress, but I've done enough on him, to give him a WIP showoff here on da warpath.
I've worked with some conversions and lightening effect on this one to make him seam like he's drawing magic from the earth, so that it isn't only his outfit that differs from the other orcs.
It's my first go at the lightning thing, and i think it turned out ok. But it's a bit hard to capture on the camera. It looks better in person, i promise ;)
Btw: had some resizing problems. irritating....

The days after tuesday will definitely give me more time, and then i "promise" to finish him, and start on the wolf riders :)
