So, what are your impressions?

I never liked the old plastic boar, have refused to buy them since they came out in mid 90s. Other players I spoke to think they are ok but to me the head-shape is all wrong and the posture made them look like motorbikes or scooters. Looking at the new ones I am fairly happy, you will never get the same detail as the old metal figures but at least they got the basics right, particularly the posture where the animals look like they are charging. The riders are ok too, not that different to previous riders. The only thing that bugs me is the standard totem, like the previous boar standard it looks a bit tacky and silly. But that is not too much an issue as you can clip it off and put on a proper banner.

All that remains now is to 'fix' the points cost. ;)

Blackmoonz - April 13, 2010 10:58 AM (GMT)
I hope they redo the wolf chariot next!

Grupas - April 13, 2010 11:26 AM (GMT)
those trolls are awe-some-more

Craze_b0i - April 13, 2010 12:00 PM (GMT)
Oh yeh, didn't notice the trolls are up there as well. I don't own any trolls but imo these river trolls are better than the previous ones.

But looking at the boars again I wish there was more fur on the heads. They look a bit peculiar with bald heads and furry bodies. I think they would look better with the face painted the same colour.

Draig - April 13, 2010 12:09 PM (GMT)
I'm going to get the two threads discussing this merged so we're all in one place!

cb_rex - April 13, 2010 12:18 PM (GMT)
These Boar Boyz look fantastic, if you look on the GW website you can check out the sprues and it seems there is an alternate banner that is a simple style flag on a spear.

Tarlen da Foeburna - April 13, 2010 12:31 PM (GMT)
They look amazing. They also look like they have too much metal on them to be easily converted to savages, which is a shame because they pulled both varieties of boar boy from the store.

The river trolls, on the other hand, are everything I expected and more. Wonderful!

Groznit Goregut - April 13, 2010 01:10 PM (GMT)
I think they all look very cool! The boars are MUCH more dynamic than the older ones. It's true that the older ones are more like scooters or motorcycles. The riders are MUCH more dynamic than the older ones. The old ones are laid back and cruising along. These guys look hunched on top and geared for a charge. Very dynamic boar boyz.

I love the sculpts, too! The orcs look mean! The shields look fantastic! The spears look better than the old ones.

*sigh* I have about 25 of the old boar boyz. If I didn’t, then I would definitely be going to get some of these guys.

The trolls look really nice, too. They are more angular and I like it, but still have a lot of character. Not like the knob headed dough-boys of the standard trolls. They are nice enough to maybe make me want to go buy some. Curses!

bloodforgedorcs - April 13, 2010 01:15 PM (GMT)
im gklad the boars are now in plastic, though im not sure if i like the look.

However, the trolls look SWEET!!! i really like them, also love the troll vomit, very realistic

bloodforgedorcs

SnotMuncha - April 13, 2010 01:24 PM (GMT)
Both look pretty cool overall.

The boars - well the faces are a little odd when you first see the pick they really jump out at you then you look a little longer and realize there are orcs on them!
They got that silly wooden boar standard still going on (though they have another another cloth banner on the sprue)
I think they could of done a little more on the boars them selves a bit more variety in the poses perhaps...
Im diggin the sheilds though nice designs gong on.

The sprues look good for conversions!

My mind isnt made up about the trolls  they look a bit plump. Firstly they could of gone the extra mile on the paint jobs. But hey there seems to be a current trend with uninspiring paintjobs in their studio armies. The 2 extra pics of the single trolls show a bit more flair.

Morten C - April 13, 2010 01:26 PM (GMT)
I have one very big concern, when i look at the river trolls: They are humongous!!!

They look like they are having the same size-increase as the minotaurs got. Place these bad boys next to my regular trolls from gamezone, and i'm afraid they will make the regular trolls look like skinny little nerds :(

What to do, what to do... oh crap they look so nice, i'll have to have at least six... no wait nine... no only six... oh the dilemma

EDIT: On the boar part: They are actually looking like real wild boars! But i will be sculpturing some green fur on their heads though. The riders ore nice too. Just to bad i don't use GW orcs.

Dregnort - April 13, 2010 01:35 PM (GMT)
So thats 10 orcs on boars and 6 trolls to buy next. No make that 20 orcs on boars and 6 trolls.

grakhnar - April 13, 2010 02:40 PM (GMT)
Looks like it's going to be an expensive month again. I'll be ordering these from Maelstrom as soon as they become available. Finally we have some decent plastic boars, now bring on the wolfriders :o
Shame about the price of the trolls although i'm still getting some, the boar boyz are a bargain though at £3 each.

Snitchy Fizzbang - April 13, 2010 03:25 PM (GMT)
I think both sets look great. Another sale for GW.

The trolls are a different style, I was trying to work what they reminded me of

......... I think it's some of the art work from 3rd ed D&D (possibly also war machine) There's an artist that signs his name WAR, not sure what name is.

Just because, here are the new Trolls.

I would love this new Boar Boy kit only for the varied dynamic poses of the Boars themselves. The rest is nice too. :D The riders themselves aren't too imaginative, but the updated look is welcome. I am rather fond of the skulls trailing from the banner as well as the musician.

Spiney Norman - April 13, 2010 04:36 PM (GMT)
Meh, forget the boar boyz, they're not bad, but they're so completely over-shadowed by the trolls. The boars are ok, but they differ quite a lot from the plastic warboss/gorbad's boars in style, which is a little confusing. Maybe I'll be more impressed when I actually see them, but the snouts look a little... aardvarky. The riders on the other hand are fairly "meh", they're orks, nothing really new or special about them.

The trolls though, wow, they're the best thing to come out of GW since they redid the stegadon.

Gramnir - April 13, 2010 05:50 PM (GMT)
Hi
Not sure this is the right place to post this, but couldn't think of a better.

THE NEW BOARS AND TROLLS ARE HERE :yarr!:

So, what do you think? good, bad, ok? better or worse than the old ones?

Personally I think I like the trolls, im not quite sure what I think about the boars, but have a look for yourself.

WAAAAAAGHH :D

Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull - April 13, 2010 05:54 PM (GMT)
The look awesome :), I can't wait to get my hands on them.

edit: I moved it to general discussion

Cheers,
G

Gramnir - April 13, 2010 06:03 PM (GMT)
Thanks for moving it B)

After taking a closer look I think I really like the new boarriders too, I just don't really like the way they've made the faces of the boars so lightcoloured, neither warthogs or boars look like that IRL (ofc, its fantasy, so whatever, but I still think they would look better with darker faces)

But the boars are definitly more dynamic than the previous ones, and theyre quite cheap too (everythings relative, but its 30 danish kroner pr model, thats about 6 dollars or 5ish euro I think)

Hopefully boarriders get better next dition, cause I think ill be "forced" to make a unit of AT LEAST 5

Im sorry, I haden't seen the other thread before posting. Ill keep other comments to the other thread ;)

Draig - April 13, 2010 06:07 PM (GMT)
Please guys, we're up to three threads discussing this now. Can we not put up any more. I'll get this one merged too. Shift all discussion to the multi page thread by Crazee Boi

Ok this is how a wild boar should look. As I mentioned the faces of the models are too bald, almost like chimps. A shame since everything else about them is quite good.

Squigkikka - April 13, 2010 06:19 PM (GMT)
The riders look fantastic, the boars look mentally retarded (which is both a + and - I guess) and the trolls I don't like at all. They lack personality and character, they are just monsters now, sadly.

Edit: On secound thought I must say I really dislike the boars. I'm a bit disappointed.

But they cost about half as much now! Half as much! Zogging great! I'll get them for sure!

Edit edit: oops.

Squigkikka - April 13, 2010 06:26 PM (GMT)
I love the riders, I hate the boars. I will probably buy them because the price has dropped in half though, and I would love some boar riders!

I don't like the river trolls much either. They are monsters now, but lack character and personality.

Warlord Ghazak Gazhkull - April 13, 2010 06:38 PM (GMT)
They look awesome:), can't wait to get my hands on them.

cheers,
G

I have to say that I am a bit sceptical to both of the new models, although I am often sceptical initially and then they grow on me...

First of; the boar boys, the first thing I noticed was the faces on the boars.I have to say that they are awful! But the positioning of the boars is a real improvement... The riders seem more or less the same to me, maybe better painted? I really don't care too much since I don't really like orcs...

The new river trolls are.... um.... interesting, I think I like them, but they are really different to the older ones, I get the feeling they will look weird beside my older stone trolls... ah well... At first I really didn't like them but then I saw the darker paint job on one of the extra pictures and then they looked really cool... So I am giving them a tentatively positive review!

Boar Boyz--- Not sure about the -Eavy Metal paint job on the boars, but the rest I love. The poses look great and these could be converted up to just about anything you want. Happy with the models and happy with the price (same as Chaos Knights here in the states)

Trolls --- not so sure about them yet. The sculpts look OK at first glance, but I'm not sure if I like how fat they look. Well, I guess if they become more usable in the next book/game version, I might look into them a bit more

Mr. Ironfist - April 13, 2010 08:50 PM (GMT)
I think the boar boyz are absolutely amazing. And so cheap. I'm gonna have to buy a LOT of those badasses. They look very orcish!
It think now the black orcs and the boar boyz are both better than the ones you can make in a warboss set

thegrumbliestpuppy - April 13, 2010 08:51 PM (GMT)
The rivertrolls are kinda cool, I like the old ones better though. However, plastic is WAY easier to work with, and I can't argue with $45 for 3 trolls instead of $60.

The new boar boyz are FANTASTIC. And cheap, at $25.
Too bad I have no reason to buy any D:

Gramnir - April 13, 2010 08:52 PM (GMT)
I don't completely agree that the trolls lack character, I think the middle one has some character. I will agree that they have much less character than the old models, but I'm not sure if thats a bad thing, they are more "realistic" like this, and less like something from a cartoon (esp some of the stonetrolls look like somethin from warner brother, not that I don't like them, but I don't think it necesarily a bad thing that the new trolls are not in quite the same style)

also, I like that they are fat, It wouldn't fit stonetrolls I think, but for rivertrolls it fits well IMO.

I think a less "ARGH THE FACE IS PINK" paintjob on the boars would go a long way to improve the overall picture. With darker faces on the boars I think the models would look great (maybe add some more fur).

Im not sure how easy it would be to convert them to savages, the legs look VERY armoured, could be hard to remake that.

but overall im quite happy with the new models, and esp the price on the boars, the trolls are a bit expensive for my taste, but still cheaper :P

edit: reposted to other thread.

Mr. Ironfist - April 13, 2010 09:16 PM (GMT)
Hmm
actually I couldn't find a reason NOT to buy such cool and cheap models ;)

Dyjo Khan - April 13, 2010 09:17 PM (GMT)
im frikkin lovin the new models, the boars are much more fantasy like now and more proportioned to the orcs physical build than the old ones, other than looking meaner and whats not to love about that?
they shouldnt look even sane enough compared to a common boar anyways, considering they are letting orcs ride em and the old ones used to look too tame compared to their riders especially a model like the chariot needed feral boars like this for a long time,i think you'all agree.
i dont think color choice is a real issue here, since we are given freedom to paint em as we like,no?
the boar boyz themselves gotten cooler,i especially love the shields but gear like-wise they look tougher and wilder.

regarding the trolls...although the old stone, blue guys are still everyone's favourite (and i make no exception) i find these new guys pretty bad-ass(old river trolls werent that amazing either anyways),especially the belching one.totally love that dude!

i know, the greenskin models are kinda slowly losing the funny and silly edge they used to have (or at least it got toned down quite a bit) but luckily there still are little gems like this every now and then that should cheer up even the die-hard fans.
personally i just dig the fiercer turn this army took as i like my boyz to act stupid more than they looking like it.even an orc as his pride, after all!
but now i wonder what they are going to redo next...hopefully the wolves are in agenda too. ;)

Tarlen da Foeburna - April 13, 2010 09:22 PM (GMT)
Just noticed that the picture rotation for the trolls has two other versions of possible gribblies, one very reminiscent of a Great Unclean One and a very cool pale green fellow.

The one with the fish (I want to name him Steve for some inexplicable reason) is my favorite so far. He combines this great amphibious predator feeling with an expression that says "Do I eat this guy whole, do I want to hit him with the club a few times first, or should the fish should be involved somehow?". Love it.

Warboss Kolgar the Brute - April 13, 2010 09:27 PM (GMT)
Well it's about time they got themselves a redux! But these models look awesome!
I was wavering whether to stick it out or go over to the beastmen side, these guys tipped me back to the orcs side. :o WAAAAAAAAGH!

Roba-Fett - April 13, 2010 09:49 PM (GMT)
Hmmm, boar boyz, yeah not bad.

Those trolls. Nope, I definitely prefer the current metals. Meh, I have 5 rivers, 5 stones and a normal from Skull Pass. I'm reckoning it's prolly enough Trolls anyway.

Draig - April 13, 2010 11:39 PM (GMT)
Guys, this is the fourth post today! We appreciate the enthusiasm, but please keep everything in one place. The one you're looking for is in the stronghold.

<waves hand>

This isn't the post you're looking for.

The new River Trolls are the coolest things I've ever seen!!

Mysticaria - April 14, 2010 01:20 AM (GMT)
I like the trolls. I'm hoping the boar riders will grow on me. Shame that River Trolls aren't very good in the current version of our army book. Hopefully with the new models they will get a much needed upgrade in the new army book. Sadly this is going to be relegated to a modelling project, and will be down on my priority list underneath everything needed to finish my competative army.

Goofycabal - April 14, 2010 01:23 AM (GMT)
Okay, I've merged three topics together into this one, and posted a message up in the newsbar :D

Right, down to business: Those are some nifty looking models indeed. I'm a little sad that there's very little in the way of extra gubbinz on either of the sets (aside from the awesome vomit stream and the cool shields for the Boyz) but the variety in the Trolls and the CHEAP price of the Boars more than make up for that!

Shame that's all we're getting for the time being - I heard there were meant to be three sets released.

Still, can't complain ^_^
