Hi
Sorry if this has already been posted, couldnt find it then
Im considering starting up a OnG army, and i was wondering what the benefits and drawbacks of regular goblins and nightgoblins are compared to each other. i know goblins have higher leadership and lower initiative, but is that the only difference, and how much of a difference does it do???
I take it regular goblins cant take fanatics and netters (thats how ive understood it anyway) but does that compensate for lower leadership (pointwise), and does the regular goblins have other advantages?

You basicly got it covered yourself, the only other advantage you can give common goblins is giving them shields so that they have a 4+ save in close combat.
Night goblins get also free shortbows, common goblins have to pay for it. So the only common gobbos you see these days are their characters and warmachines and cavalry. Altough I use the ard grotz sometimes when I play with my full gobbo army.

I say that they both have their uses. I think night goblins are a bit better in this edition, but that doesn’t mean regular gobbos are not worth taking! Also, with so many Battle for Skull Passes floating around, you see lots of night goblins.
Probably the biggest reason people like night goblins are the ability to take fanatics. Even if they don’t take any fanatics, people might think that they have them and avoid them. The whole psychological warfare you can do is really crazy. Some people will put a huge pile of fanatics on the side of the table (like they are going to use them) and then not have any in their army (or not many). That can be pretty good.
Common goblins, though, have the ability to take shields. They are usually called ‘ard grotz then, as they get the amazing 4+ armor save. Lots of people underestimate goblins in combat. This often happens with ‘ard grotz. An elf general will send in a unit of spearmen to go clear out some ‘ard grotz in the way and be completely shocked when they have a 4+ armor save. So, the elves don’t cause that many casualties and the goblins can win via static CR. Or lock the unit in place so another can flank it. ‘Ard grotz are great for marching slowly across the battlefield to attack archers or war machines on hills. Does the enemy player spend a couple of rounds shooting at the ‘ard grotz? Or at a real target? If they ignore the goblins, they are usually toast. If they spend any bit of effort on the goblins, it will be hard to kill enough to make a difference. Also, with the 4+, it’s not easy to beat the little blighters with most other Core troops.
The point of Ld certainly doesn’t hurt these days with so many fear and terror causers. Also, for a sacrificial unit, they rally on a 7+ (with musician).
I will also point out KevinC, who won the Colonial GT a couple of years ago with an All Common Goblin army. His tactic was to have multi-purpose units. These were big units of common goblins with shields and short bows. They got the 4+ armor save, but also, the whole unit got to fire at large targets or units on a hill. This was a big combat unit and something that could put a wound or two on a dragon (not to mention kill off a whole unit of elves or humans just standing on a hill).
So, both are worthwhile and both are good, but you will see more night goblins these days.

I use night goblins 'caus they have kick ass miniatures, I fell in love with them the moment I held the little gobbo that came with the white dwarf...
the evil look on his face just stole my hearth.
also they're so easy to paint :P

Night Goblins are cheap archers and goblins can be "really" 'ard 4+ armoursave.

Thanks for the replies. I think i might get a unit or two of regular goblins for some harder combat infantry. i think ill stick to the all goblin line, atleast so far as infantry is conserned, might get a boarchariot or something, but only orcs as supporttroops (or hammertroops if i get my hands on some boarriders).
