Title: A Rookies Waaagh!
Captain Calamity - April 10, 2009 04:24 PM (GMT)
Decisions are tough!
I'm planning an orc unit with two mooning orcs in the front rank; one on each side of the command group (one male and one female) as well as a unit banner picturing a mooning orc.
But how to namn the tribe?
Da Fullmoon Tribe or Da Moonshine Tribe...
Feedback anyone?

My Gork, I have been mooned! Agh, my eyes are burning!
Wow, good conversion work there. What did you use for the cheeks? Milliput? Looks good so far, mate....just make sure to keep it family friendly. :D
Da Moonshine Tribe sounds kinda fun. You have a couple ways to go there, but the one I like is something like this: savage orcs looking like mountain hill people (think "Deliverance") with crazy moonshine stills with pipes and vats could be chukkas or stone throwers. Dancing, drunken shamen (brewers) with jugs of shine. Perhaps your musician could have banjos.
So much potential if you wanted it. How far are you willing to go?

I think that when this picture was shot I hadn't added any material.
I carved the shape out from the plastic with a scalpell.
The model I used is a sixth edition Orc Boar Chariot crew.
Since then I've done some more work.
I have quite a few pics that are yet to come - as soon as I have worked out a truce between my flash player and Ubuntu.

That's great!
I like Da Fullmoon Tribe if it's going to be one unit in your army.
For a themed army, I like Da Moonshine Tribe with Goomb's mountain hill people and stills and banjos idea, kinda like Da Great Drunk'n Waaagh!
Keep us updated whichever direction you go in.
Captain Calamity - April 10, 2009 09:15 PM (GMT)
A more recent photo.

My plan is to mix male and female orcs in this unit. The female orcs I have needs some major conversion though.
I use female orcs from Shadowforge mixed with sixth edition orcs.
My first conversion next to the original.

The first one plus a couple of more conversions.
Picture is shot today wich is why some details are still unpainted.
Captain Calamity - April 10, 2009 09:31 PM (GMT)
Night Goblins - Tribe of da Magic Mushroom.

I've not yet built the standard bearer, so I put the shaman in the front rank in his stead.
The standard bearer will come with the story / "battlereport" behind his design...
Captain Calamity - October 7, 2009 08:16 PM (GMT)
Been a while...
I've started working on what is going to be the General.

Her legs are the sixth edition orc Warbosses.
The torso / chest - whatever - is scratchbuilt from "Green Stuff" (only it's grey stuff)

The last few days I've finally managed to puch myself to an effort and start building army again.
General progress:

I guess going from unarmed to onearmed is sort of an improvement...

Both the tusks and the horns are made from bows from the sixth edition error boyz.
The arm with choppa is taken from the Warboss.
The chamfron on the boar is scratchbuilt. The three horns on it are cut off from orc helmets though.

I must say, that's a cool idea for a WAAGH :) Female Orcs... I wonder how they'll all turn out!
Captain Calamity - November 14, 2009 06:03 PM (GMT)
I'm bored.
The table is beeing occupied by partner and kids playing a board game.
I want to use it for painting.
However, I have something I've been planning to tell here for quite some time now;
Last winter when I painted my first goblin unit my by that time six years old daughter asked if she could play with the models.
I gave her the first goblin I had painted - a test model - and an unpainted boar.
First she played with the goblin, letting it walk past my row of half painted goblins singing:" Nyah nyah nyah nyah nyaaah nyah, you are no-ot painted, I-I-I a-am, you are no-ot finished..."
After that she let the goblin prod the boar in the butt with it's spear.
Couple of days later at another painting session I let her play with an orc.
She wandered around the table with it and all of a sudden said; "Now I've hunted down and killed eight boars, chopped them up and put them in my food storage!"
I think she have grasped the green skin mentality perfect.

Another long absence.
Captain Calamity is obviously an unreliable bastard.
Anyway; to the point:
Since I haven't been sitting around wasting my time here at the forum :-P I've actually gotten some work done.
For one thing, the general's finished. Female on albino boar.

Both the mooning orcs are finished as well.

So far I've been placing them in the front rank on either side of the command group.
Orc boyz (and galz for that matter) standard bearer

Boar chariot

I've also finally kicked myself in the butt and started to learn some about photo editing.
I still find it pretty boring though, but I have to admit the pics are way better now.

@Paiant Slapah: Thanks!
@emilfrojd: *Til next Lincon? Finished enough to enter the tournament? Oh, now you're being funny, aren't you!? ;-)
@BorkBork: *ROTFL*
@Snakebellywagonrut: Hell, yes! I totally forgot about that decision. I've actually made up me mind. "Da fullmoon tribe" it is!
Captain Calamity - March 14, 2011 08:05 PM (GMT)
Okay folks; I promised I would tell you the story behind the design of my Night Goblin unit standard bearer.
So, here we go.
A little more than two years ago Captain Calamity is not yet Captain Calamity, but a total newbie.
From one day to another I had changed from ”Warhammer; geeky!” to ”I want in!” :-P
I went to visit a friend and asked him if we could play. (I'll never forget the face he made then!)
He put together a dwarf army for himself and an orcs and goblins army for me. (Yes, I said I was a total newbie, but hell; I'm not stupid – I've known all along which army to play!)
First (to avoid misunderstandings): This took place in December 2008 and so, of course, we were playing the 7th edition set of rules.
I don't remember all the turns and in which order things happened, but I recall having a carload of 1s on animosity in my first turn and an equal carload of 6s in my second and since my friend was playing dwarfs it took a while to get into charge range.
Anyway, the first chance I had of charging I actually didn't have much that could charge – in fact only a unit of Night Goblins.
So I declared that I wanted them to charge.
My friend helped me and pointed out that considering the arc of visibility I had two choices; ”either you can charge that unit or that character”.
”I want them to charge...him!” I said pointing at his Dragon Slayer.
He said ”Okay” with what I thought to be a slightly odd expression in his face and a tone in his voice that later I interpreted like ”go right ahead – you'll learn soon enough!”
I moved in.
Since my champion was in base contact I had 4 attacks. I rolled to hit: 3 hits, I rolled to wound: double 6! (plus something irrelevant).
My friend (again making a face): ”What!? No, he DIED!”
I can mention that after killing the Slayer the Night Goblin unit charged and eventually hunted down a unit of Warriors (who fled off the table after breaking) and captured their banner. Night Goblins then ran back out on the battlefield again, and if only there had been any turn left they would have charged his Iron Breakers in the flank. They kicked butt! (As opposed to the orc boyz unit who panicked and fled twice – the second time they were hunted down and thereby lost the battle standard. Way to go boyz! :-( )
Alas; that's why my night goblin standard bearer looks like this:

A pain-in-the-butt snotling adds to the finish

(I just saw that I have forgotten to paint the pain-in-the-butt snotlings face. Rats! Oh, well; I'll fix that.)
EDIT: I mean the pain-in-the-butt snotlings EYES of course!
Beithir Seun - March 15, 2011 01:55 AM (GMT)
Haha! That standard bearer is awesome :D Great idea, and very well implemented
BorkBork - March 15, 2011 11:20 AM (GMT)
hilarious!! :)
fantastic BSB.
Especially the snotling with the feather is a briljant idea. But, the snotty's face perhaps needs a little more work (teeth and eyes)
Captain Calamity - March 15, 2011 03:38 PM (GMT)
Updates:
I took care of that ruddy snotling right away. Bloody hell! That was tricky. It's too small. I've just discovered that I never want to paint snotlings again. Despicable little creeps! :vomit:

I've also shot some photos to show some models that I finished some time ago.
My Orc boyz-'n-galz unit champion:

She is made from a Shadowforge Grid Iron model.
Some of those Grid Iron models (like this particular one) is very difficult to arm. So I let her keep that pointing-direction finger (let's se how many members except for the Swedish who catch that reference). Her axe is sitting in the shield on the ground. (Which can bee a bit hard to make out on this pic.)
Oh, yes; that's a correct observation. The shield isn't painted yet.
I'll (hopefully) paint it as the shields of (or the colour scheme of) the first army I beat when playing with that champion. And since that has not yet happened...
(For those of you who don't want to jump to you own conclusions - I suck!)
Here is also my first ever conversion.
Also made from a Grid Iron model, but this one fairly easy to add weapons to.

She's armed with some orcish form om Kataras, or push daggers.
I exchanged her head for an ordinary sixth edition orc boyz head, and I also sculptured a skirt on her - now, isn't that cute!?
And just now, watching da photo I observe that the top of her helmet has been broken and is about to fall off. This photo editing mania is only causing more work.
Damn you photoshop - damn you to hell!
More horrific pictures will be up soon!

I just hated my Dragon slayer in that game he got his very (un)glorious death that he deserved.
Great job with the banner. To bad that you got two bases of Snotlings as a christmas present then.
emilfrojd - March 17, 2011 11:43 AM (GMT)
You just have to pick up the speed so you will be finished to play on Lincon.

No kidding. I didn't realise until much later just how unlikely that was.
But from what I've heard he got sort of a revenge later when wiping clean some quarter of a battlefield on his own and killing ogres by the dozen; so I guess he's made up for that blunder by now. ;)

Hmm, I know. That has actually started gnawing on me; I like them, but I don't think I'll be able to do a particularly good painting job on them - and I certainly won't like doing it.
I'm starting to think that I am actually prepared to pay to have someone else do the job.
*wink wink, hint hint, nudge nudge*
And as for Lincon; well, maybe if I work like a rock lobber crew with an orc bully whipping my back I just might be able to get an army ready.
But then I don't know da rulez well enough, I don't play fast enough, I make far too many mistakes and what more is; I'm inexperienced and you know I don't do well under pressure.
I really wouldn't want to do that to my opponents. People visit the convention and enter the tournament to have a good time and have fun playing games - not to baby-sit me and acting teacher for me!
I do have a plan for Lincon though!
I'll get back to you on that one.

Yupp, I've taken care of that! :D
As well as I could that is. I guess I'll just have to accept snotlings are to small for my painting ability. My sight is far from perfect and I also have problems with an elbow that makes my hand less steadier than I wish it was. Such's life. I'll just stick with da bigga boyz 'n galz!

I'm in the middle of a weekend painting marathon (and alone to, which is quite boring from time to time) and alternating between the painting table and the computer to save my back.
As for conversions I'm still in a trial-and-error/learning-by-doing phase.
Some models I finished last year:

The camera is on vacation so I won't be able to shoot any photos today.
I'll see if I have time to do it tomorrow when it gets back home.

Thank you! I'm working on it. :-)
Here are a couple of pictures of two females I finished the other day. The originals are error boys from the sixth edition start box.
I've cut away the quivers and sculptured butts by cutting the shape out of the plastic with a scalpel, exchanged the bows in their right hands for axes (the right hands where already holding choppas - convenient!) and then sculptured boobies.

I've also finished my Doom Diver Catapult.
It's just plain though; no conversions or anything.
Vanilla Doom Diver Catapult:

Finding the right light for this photo was a though one.
It's not really doing the colour justice (there is a sickly green tone that got lost in the picture), but the colour of the grease turned out to be a real thriller - it looks like radioactive snot; wicked!
